  1. Royal purple is fine in an engine, but transmissions and engines are two completely COMPLETELY different applications. Some guys swear by automatic transmission fluid for some transmissions, and nissan even recomends it in their FSM for the T5 in the turbo cars. It's widely accepted that one of the better fluids that you can try in most manual trannys is syncromesh, by penzoil or GM. I WOULD NOT use regular engine weight oil though. Maybe in pinch, expecting to change it out in a week or so, but not for long term use. It's just plain the wrong weight in order to keep a transmission lubed and cooled.
  2. yup... enough to take on nearly anything that rolls up on you and beating them with a nearly silent motor. If that's not sleeper I don't know what is. The battery weight still kills ya. The two 11 inch motors should be under 500 pounds, but you're looking at another 500+ pounds of batteries in order to keep those motors turning for a decent amount of time. That's a 1000 pound power plant... not very light.
  3. Ok, so who's gonna be the first to put twin 11 inch transwarp motors in their Z?.... Almost sounds as yummy as twin VG30E motors... Range won't be as good with the electric though.
  4. Since you're only using 1st and 2nd your cruise transmission ratio is 2.197. Going direct drive you'd need at least a 7.xx+ rear diff to get close to the final ratio you currently have with 2nd gear. I like the idea of direct drive, but it seems it might be a bit too much stress long term on the motor correct? I also just love the idea of having the entire motor in the trans tunnel. Open up the hood - "What motor?". Weight placement would be pretty good.
  5. Yea, that's physically a part of the rim, not a disk. That area WILL be reduced and the lip moved out in order to get a larger offset. That's what will create more dish the most, opposed to a "flatter" spoke.
  6. I agree most of this information is out there on this board, but it seems you have these questions from some of the very threads that hold your answers, so I'll be polite and help out a bit. You're definately on the right track. Just going off the wind tunnel data the best bet is to block off as much of the front end you can, while adding in as much duct work as needed in order to keep the engine cool still. Also, since you're running a spoiler attatched to the hatch, I'm sure you're having a hard time getting air to it. Do some research here on vortex generators, or VGs. You seem to have a good idea of what direction to head. Just study the threads in this section more and I'm sure you'll figure out what you want to do.
  7. Woldson, if you want more info on Koni strut rebuilding then check out the super uber insanely long damper thread in the suspention section. Several people talk about getting their koni struts rebuilt and I think it was around $60 a shock and in many cases you could get them rebuild to your own specs.
  8. They can handle it yes... have you ridden in these cars off road? I have. It's not a fun experience. On the flip side the soft suspension of a stock WRX is very nice off road and won't break your back. Just because both of these cars can be "set" to run on dirt doesn't mean it's a great idea. Have you checked the ground clearence on these cars? On a rough road (like a logging road in oregon) you'll be scrapping the bottom constantly. I'm just saying if I was driving off road and I wasn't going to be modifying the vehicle I'd take a stock WRX over a STI or EVO.
  9. Don't tell anyone I've been browsing this site.... http://www.evparts.com/prod-MT2144.htm
  10. Ummm... Sorry but I'm confused. Sell a faster car because you don't have the time and money to do to it what you want, so you'll buy a MORE expensive car that requires MORE money to modify... I love the EVO and WRX, but they're both money pits even more so than your Z. Why not sell other projects and then buy a more practical daily driver? Do you need something with AWD? A stock WRX or even impreza might be more suited to rough roads than a STI or Evo, as both of those are pretty much setup for street roads from factory. They'll handle snow, but not rough dirt road, at least, not like their softer cousins. I've often considered a subie wagon because though ugly they're a sporty car that can hold plenty of music equipment. Though a more practical solution for me would be a car like a focus. I guess it's just two different paths that probably cost about the same. Have a car that's good at everything? Or have two cars that are much better at what they do, and cost less per car. But then you have to have space for two, insurance for two, etc.
  11. Yea, I'd say find a clean S130 chassis for like $500 or less. That'd be MUCH cheaper than doing the rust repair. There's VERY little difference between the chassis itself between 79 and 83. The main differences are mounting tabs for various pieces, like the AFM and the bitching betty. Those two things are the first that come to mind of stuff that needed to be modified when I did my swap. But it's a pretty bolt in affair as long as both cars have the same number of seats. Not sure what the 280ZX (S130) supply like over in VA, but here in CA I can find them under $800 on craigslist just about any week of the year. The other option would be to get an older Z (S30) between 70-78. The earlier the year the lighter they are, and thus the engine swap would make for a faster car. Though I really do like the 280ZX and would be collecting them for projects if they didn't need to be smogged here in CA. The 280ZX is just about as light as a 280Z when you remove the power features, and has much better stock aerodynamics and can fit decently large tires under the stock wheel wells. All around fun cars to work on. So yea, easy route I'd say buy another 79-83 280ZX. Harder route but well worth it would be to buy a 70-73 240Z. Both good projects. Not sure how much you know about those engines though, they have quite a bit of potential. 300 crank HP is not difficult to get out of them, even with a higher milage motor like yours.
  12. Ok ok ok, you convinced me So who feels like ya missed out? Cuz you did! So can anyone find some more info on these? Me and woldson were able to confirm they were made for the 280ZX, but not who ever sold them in the USA, and how much they sold for. The only google result that produce code brings up is a yahoo auction in japan. EDIT: Did another quick search. Not sure how I never found this before http://store.classicgarage.com/rear19nis28i.html Seems they're about $70 per shock, though that doesn't include a spring, and the product code doesn't include the R. Wonder if they're different or not.
  13. Datsun pickup = The truck I found one in looked just like that. I have one of these truck shifters sitting in my garage. I just never got around to putting it in my ZX since I started the engine swap and it was "going" to have a T5 in it. Still not sure I'll ever used. Maybe someday. It's not had to see if the shifter would work. First clue will be that the upper portion is really long. In the datsun trucks your entire butt was above the transmission, not next to, so the shifter reaches a lot farther to get to you. They used a "short shifter" so to speak to reduce the throw a little bit so you weren't swinging your arm through the window. Take one of those, cut it down to normal size, weld it, then drill a new hole in shifter ears that's higher up and voila, super short shift. I havn't done it myself, so I can't testify how "worth it" it is, but if you're looking for a shorter shift I think it's well worth it, as it WILL make a significant difference. I just can't give you measurements of how much. The hardest part of the job would be drilling the new holes in the mount ears. I don't think you can really get at it with the tranmission still in the car, unless you want to hack up your tranny tunnel. It might be possible to just take off the tranny mount and then jack the tranny up a bit so it sticks out of the tunnel just enough, but that doesn't sound very safe.
  14. Impressive indeed. I think here in CA we're paying around .12 per KwH in residential areas. So that's still quite a bit cheaper than gas... and it's no slouch like a lot of the electric cars being made. What do you think your cruising speed will have to be to get the most out of the batteries? With such a short range driving 80mph might not be wise.
  15. Nope, not me playing. I've got about half of it memorized. Not easy stuff to get down when you have to think about playing the delay as much as the guitar... It's a buckethead song btw Well it didn't look as out of place when there was TWO.... I thought they were a welcome addition, much like the skyline. If only aux had a RUNNING rotory Z car there to bridge the gap....
  16. Did I mention the whole engine/tranny were gone in my first post? I thought I did. Even if I did, no worries. Yea, it's all gone. Diff is there if anyone wants a 3.90 R200 but i'm not shipping it. It won't be worth the time and effort, unless someone wants to really overpay for a 3.90. If that's the case I've got a spare 3.90 in my backyard... The tan suade seats weren't in TERRIBLE shape, but still not very good. They had the trademark ZX logo stamping. The rear seats looked good, would be worth having if your rear seats were tan and thrashed. There were two 79-81 brown ZX cars there, mostly complete NA engines. One was a 79, unsure of the other one, but it had the earlier hood. I think it was a P79 head iirc, so 80-81. The blue one was also NA. If someone is going by there let me know when. I might be able to stop by and say hi, or they could stop by my work and say hi. I'm less than 5 miles from PNP I think. That's about all I can remember right now. OH YEA... ...there's a complete 1UZFE there right now. It was KILLING me. I wanted to just start ripping that thing outta there. There was also a turbo mark 3 supra if anyone was interested. motor looked completel, turbo and all, but the oil was pretty nasty black and grimey. Congrats to woldson on these shocks. They seem pretty sweet. If I wasn't planning on giving up my S130 project I'd want these for myselfs. I'll post more details about them once they're in woldson's hands, as long as he doesn't mind of course.
  17. Any of the datsun trucks with the same tranny series. So any datsun truck with a L series motor. This shifter has a much longer section bellow the pivot point, so if you drill a new hole for the pivot point it'll still make contact and be able to shift, giving you a pretty short throw.
  18. So and idea how much it's costing in electricity? I'd think here in California it'd cost just as much as gas, as electricity isn't cheap. Battery's aren't cheap to replace I'm sure, but I'd imagine overall maintanence goes down quite a bit.
  19. Agreed. There's a reason why so many people break driveline parts at the track. Do you think those people really don't go that hard on their car on the street? Most tracks are WAY stickier than street asphalt and provide a lot more traction, meaning people can launch at higher RPM sending more torque through the driveline. If you're keeping the tires stock then I doubt there will be much issue. I'm more curious what driveability is like. Seems like it'd be weird driving a manual eletric car. I'm curious what clutch you're using though, as I'd imagine the massive torque from the motor to take it's toll when feathering the clutch.
  20. Hey I reconise some of those cars... Love the last one. Wonder if any of these guys here know thier cars are on this vid.
  21. Not much to say, except sorry for the serious lack of footage. I spent nearly the whole day talking to Eric and Nick and completely forgot about filming with the camera. Then by the time me and Chris finished fitting the prototype rims on Eric's 78' people were ready to head out so I just made a quick run by all the cars.(neither Eric or Nick are posters here, but I believe Eric knows Tony D and was stationed in Okinawa at the same time... correct Tony?) Eric does post here from time to time, he's got a RB30 project that should be pretty fierce. Also, it won't hurt my feelings if you don't like the music. I just needed something to slap over the video since the wasn't any audio on the video worth hearing. Only reason I picked that song is because it's something I've been learning to play so it's in my head all the time. Other than that... enjoy.
  22. Aww, I'm offline on the weekends and missed this. Hope you had a great time, hope you kept safe. Happy late B-Day.
  23. The best info I could give you would be this. Go to autozone's website (parts store) http://www.autozone.com/home.htm And under you vehicle selection tell them you have a 81-83 280ZX and they'll ask what engine. They'll have a precentage of how many were turbo or NA. You can double check it all for yourself, but this is what you'll get: With those percentages you should get a pretty accurate number of how many there were, and based upon how many 280ZXT cars I see around those numbers seem pretty accurate. There's lots of them, but certainly bellow 25% of the production. Not sure if that's official enough for you, but I've never seen concrete data on how many 280ZXTs there were as the weren't a limited production run, they were a trim level that saw huge figures.
  24. Nice choice. I personally think if I were buying a newer truck I'd pick something along those lines. Smaller nissan or toyota with a crew cab + long bed 4X4. Should be able to tow anything most people need to, and it'll get much better gas milage and is easier to drive around than thier massive big brothers.
  25. PickNPull in fairfield. Take air base parkway off I-80. Go east on air base a long ways and when you pass walters St you know you're close (it's a light). Should be up about a 1/4 mile from there on the right, and you'll see a big pickn'pull sign. Np woldson. Expect to hear from me today around 4pm.
