  1. Mike, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I'll look over your posts. That's nearly double the rear wheel HP and MORE than TWICE the gas mileage of my current drivetrain. That really rocks!!!
  2. This one was black with an M5 motor--detuned for compression I'm sure, and I'm not sure what the turbo was. It was under the intake stacks and it was a really tight fit. My compliments to the very talented tech, Justin for his creativity. I also questioned the utility of a non-reinforced unibody BMW with 1000 HP. Great achievement though. It looked totally stock from the outside and even from the engine bay at first glance as the turbo plumbing was mostly hidden. It's the kind of car that I would pull up to at the stoplight with my TTV8 and smugly think that I could dust it, only to have my head handed to me.
  3. I've been dormant, but I finally got the car out for a spin today around the neighborhood. It's fun terrorizing the neighbors. Now I've got to get it street legal.
  4. Thanks for all the insight. Even though I have been around the block a few times with the SBC, I'm new to the LSX world. Keep it comin'
  5. Where did you have your work done? While my twin turbo was at the Carburetor Shop in Denver to be completed, There was an old M5 that made what was claimed to be 1000HP. The owner brought it back a few weeks later to have the turbo redone to get more response out of it. You are greedy, greedy people.
  6. Wow. And I thought I scored with and LS1/T56 with all the accessories for $3500. You really scored and should recover your investment. Still, my wife would be hounding me forever for having a wrecked car around, so it's worth it for me to go the route I went.
  7. Fricken unbelievable. That's all I can say http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/showthread.php?t=321623
  8. Sorry, typo, it's a 1999. I went back and edited it.
  9. Ok, I picked up a complete LS1/T56 combo with all the accessories (a 99 Camaro SS drivetrain) on EBAY for well under $4000. I couldn't help it once the bidding started and stayed reasonable. Looks like it will become the replacement drivetrain for my 93 RX7. I was shying away from a non-rotary for the Mazda, but it just fell into place. My current setup has over 90K miles and may blow up any day (of course, I'm not encouraging it in any way, wink wink). My question for you LS1 guys is, what mods have you done and why? I want this to be more reliable than my Datsun (which will continue to be my no holds barred fast car) but I still want it to be insanely fast. I know they respond well to high flow heads, a cam, and long tube headers, but what level of horsepower will that get me? Also, I can't get the word "supercharger" out of my head. What can I say, I love forced induction and V8's, but I'm afraid that I'd have to tear into the engine to get stronger components. Basically, what I'm after is your opinions on horsepower/torque vs. cost vs. practicality/reliability as a daily driver (although it would be a weekend car). Seems like everytime I search for info, I'm let to a site that wants to sell me something and I don't necessarily trust them. Thanks.
  10. I think that may just fit under my FD3S--once I take a hacksaw to the hood. I wonder what 950 HP and 2800 pounds of curb weight feels like?
  11. It's about 60 hours a week now, but that is a ton better than the 120 a week that I did in training. I know it seems unfathomable, and it took a long time for me to believe it, but surgeons in training will actually do those kind of crazy hours.
  12. I've been interested in converting to E85. In most modern cars, the fuel system is up to the task, as the lines , tank, injector seals are ethanol resistant. The stoichiomentric ratio for E85 is about 9:1, so some enrichment is usually needed. There is a device called Flextune that can be installed that will allow your car to be a flex fuel vehicle. Factory flex fuel vehicles have a fuel composition meter that adjusts your car according to the ethanol content, so you can use regular gas, E85, or any combination in between. Unfortunately, the Flextune device only works with Bosch EV1 connectors right now. Also, they are not shipping at present since there are legal concerns over altering a fuel injection system (against EPA rules, which is silly since an E85 car is cleaner)-I'm not gonna let that stop me. I'm looking into Megaquirt or Electromotive systems to do the E85 conversion on my Acura MDX. These should work just fine to enrich my mixture and advance timing a bit when the fuel composition sensor senses E85. Megasquirt II is already set up for this. In the meantime, I have been running a 50/50 mixture of E85 and 85 octane gas. It runs just fine except for the "check engine" light comes on when I use this mix, probably because the O2 sensor doesn't see enough smog in the exhaust! Why am I doing this? First of all to stick it to OPEC and Big Oil. Also, E85 costs $1.99/gallon as opposed to $3.00 for the premium 91 octane unleaded I'm supposed to run.
  13. I was outrunning them a few years back with just a mildly warmed over 350. My friend ditched his for a Viper after losing to me too many times. That was BEFORE my turbos. Now I think I'm equipped to take on any streetable S4.
  14. True, there is less energy potential gallon for gallon from ethanol, hence the need for enrichment. As far as other components not being up to the task, I think this is becoming less of an issue in newer cars. Lots of metal fuel lines and viton seals on the injectors. I did try a little experiment today. I live at altitude, so we always tend to run a little to the rich side. I figured it would be OK to run a 50/50 mixture of gas and E85 (the only station carrying it in the state is just a mile from home). It seems to run great in my MDX. The only problem I've noted so far is that the CHECK ENGINE light came on. I can only assume that's because it is running outside of normal parameters. I hope that is the case and nothing serious is wrong. It was a real rush not buying about 9 gallons of fuel from BIG OIL. Another plus is that it cost $1.98 a gallon, or nearly a dollar less than the premium I normally use. Plus, it's totally renewable, clean burning fuel that is ultimately (when you think about it) stored solar power.
  15. With the higher gas prices, I've become interested in "converting" my cars to ethanol, or at least giving them the capability of burning e85. It's not so much to save money. I just want to do my part to stick it to OPEC and the big oil companies. Basically, I would have to get rid of the rubber in the fuel system, add an extra filter (as the ETOH tends to dissolve rust), and maybe raise compression (usually not, since modern engines are already up there), and because ethanol has less total energy than gasoline, I would have to richen the fuel mixture. There is a device called Flextune that enriches the air/fuel mixture, but they only use Bosch EV1 connectors for now. This won't work with my Acura MDX injectors. My question is, do you think some of the aftermarket ecu's would be up to the task? I would tend to think so. I have an Electromotive TEC III on my Datsun and it's capable of a lot. I have also thought of the alternative of adding an injector into the manifold as a wet system that would activate under load--kinda like the NOS systems use (in fact, I thought of just purchasing a NOS auxilary fuel setup for a cheap way to go) What are your opinions, fuel injection gurus?
  16. That's funny, I thought this was a thread that I had posted several weeks ago with almost the same title. I was shocked to hear my numbers and I thought it was a mistake. Must be a disease of middle aged men. They say a man can have 3 types of vices. Women, substance abuse, and cars/toys. I think the last one is the cheapest and healthiest, if not the most fun.
  17. What an amazing achievement. Not only do you probably have the fastest streetable (or any) car on HybridZ, but you also made it hook up incredibly well. I could just feel the acceleration. Good job!
  18. Regarding the fuel pump, it is true that the book says that, but the fuel pump is 30 years old, and just for insurance, it would be nice to have a new inliner in there. As far as headers, the cheapo block huggers from Summit work fine. Regarding the V6 T5, aren't there a lot of cheap V8 T5's from the Gen 3 Camaros? I would think that would be plenty strong for a TPI motor. Of course, I did all that stuff a million years ago and I have half the brain cells now, so I'm not sure of any of this.
  19. I never thought of that last one. That's the most logical solution. You can drive it around, become familiar with the Z, fix the bugs, and do the mandatory upgrade of the brakes/suspension, and you already have your drivetrain when you are ready. Bill's a genius. That's why I love this forum. Thousands of minds are better than one.
  20. I agree, it is a big letdown, but they handle well, and if you run some nitrous, which you can do cheaply, it'll be more fun, and you can beat the hell out of it trying to destroy it and justifying the Datsun project. I'm thinking of trying nitrous in my 93 RX7 to explode the motor so I can put an LS1 in it-unfortunately, I got one of those rare motors that just keeps going on and on.
  21. I'm really starting to like that yellow color. I know it's premature, but what color are you gonna paint it?
  22. An LT1 t56 makes a great powertrain for a Datsun Z. As swaps go, this is pretty easy. (Not as easy as getting another F body shell, if a decent one can be found. You can buy the mount stuff off the shelf from Jags That Run (get the book also). Like any custom project, though, you will run into delays, and as a student, you likely don't have the facilities or time for the project, not to mention the funds for miscellaneous stuff. Also, don't forget that the brakes and suspension are not up to snuff of a rip snortin V8. Also, these conversions are kinda rough for a daily driver, even at your age. I see them as fun cars, even though there are some here who drive them every day. If I were in your shoes, I would get the conversion book (notice how I repeated that), and use this as an excuse to do this project in the future (i.e. pull the motor/tranny and store it). In the meantime, get a 15 year old Civic (I can't believe I just said that) or better yet, a Neon until you graduate.
