  1. What great guns Savages are. I know I'm going to stir up a debate here. I got my first Savage, a 10FP in .308 a couple of years ago. It is a paper hole puncher, despite it's cheap stock and out of the box configuration. In all, it cost about $500. I got a case of Remington envy (because everyone says the 700's are more accurate), though, and I picked up a 700 VS and had it built up to 40X specs. Wouldn't ya know it, my $500 gun will still outshoot it. That's why, when I found a Savage 110 action in .300 RUM, I snatched it up right away for the princely sum of $250. It's gonna be my 1000 yard gun. Love those cheapo guns.
  2. As I recall, I was looking up some info on the Monster Miata when I was directed to this site. The MM, ultimately, was responsible for me getting into the crazinesss of putting V8's in cars they don't belong in. So to the Monster Miata I say "curse you"
  3. It's amazing how so many of us had both cars. I guess we have good taste.
  4. Found a source for domestics: And imports:
  5. Well, we truly live in the golden age of performance cars. I mean, Honda Accords with 0-60 times in the 6 second range? Family sedans with 300+ NET horsepower? That's awesome. On the other hand, they are also getting a lot heavier as we add more accessories like GPS, climate control, audio/visual systems, etc. I agree that some of this weight is for safety/structural improvements, but the new Mustang and Camaro weigh close to two tons! That's a heavy weight. If current trends continue, cars will have 1000 HP ethanol burning engines and weigh about as much as an M1 tank, yet manage to get 50 mpg. Luckily, it'll only cost you 500 grand.
  6. Yeah, details if you have them. Looking at the trial fit, I would say there is no way you could pull that off. Once you hook up the turbo plumbing, it won't fit in the engine bay. I don't even think you have room for a steering rack. Then you would have to create a tranny tunnel and space for a driveshart, and then a rear suspension, differential and halfshafts. I'm not saying it couldn't be done.....look at the Ford Focus V8 conversion, but in the end you have a severely compromised Ford Focus. This one looks like what the picture shows, a trial fit.
  7. Dr Hunt, about your fishing partner, that's a couple of big ones she has there---bass that is. Aux--I had a personal assistant once that was a dead ringer for Barbie. I couldn't believe I was getting a six foot blonde with 360 cc implants. Unfortunately, was also about her brain volume. She was sweet, but was always making mistakes. I just had to let it slide. I don't know if I could have let a comment like that slide though.
  8. That is so sweet. I just picked up an LS1 drivetrain for my RX7, but I was thinking of pickin up an LS2 for the extra displacement, but then I thought, heck, it will just be a matter of time before the shortblocks become available (either LS7 or 427 ci LSX) in large quantities. I'm not gonna pony up the megabucks for an LS7 crate motor. It'll be only a matter of time before the z06 folks start crashing them. I assume from your hoodline that you use the Hinson type conversion as opposed to the Granny's?
  9. I heard that for Warren Buffett's 70th birthday, he rented an entire lots worth of rental cars and had a demolition derby. Pretty cool for a rich dude who's tight with his money.
  10. My wife is an attorney, and I have gone with her on many occasions to traffic court for fun. She has also represented me a few times with good results. I have several observations. At your age, you can't afford any points on your record. You will likely never convince the judge of your version of the events over the officers unless you are very articulate. I would dress well, in a suit if possible. Also, hire an attorney if you can. That will close the credibility gap. An attorney can explain events in a way that is more believable to the judge. There is also the "old boys club" thing among legal types. On a couple of occasions, my wife chatted with the assistant DA about anything but the incident in question (the weather, the kids, etc). Then they worked out incredible deals for me in a matter of seconds. Not really fair, but that's how the system works.
  11. You just keep on scoring right and left!
  12. Yeah, those TR7's pretty much sucked. The TR8 was cool, but too little too late.
  13. How about an LS1? OK, I'll be different. If you really don't want 500hp, why not a ZZ383. It'll drop in without any modification, is covered under warranty, and it will still lay a nice strip of rubber.
  14. I have to say, my twins are extremely smooth. In fact, other than the fact that the car goes like a bat out of hell, it's sometimes hard to know they are there. There is not turbo kick, just a lot of brutal, seemingly endless power throughout the power band.
  15. It really sounds like you are off to a good start to the cheap build. Assuming the motor is in fairly good condition, now would be a good time to change out the cam, put cheap block hugger headers on it, take off the heads and port them if you are up to it or can find someone to do it for you. Or if you are interested in performance, I've got a spare set of AFR 195's for sale (shameless plug on my part) : ) . As for intake, there are many choices on the market, and if you want to keep it on the cheap, check EBay for a dual plane manifold. That should get you an inexpensive, cheap build (of course, how would I know anything about building cheaply--I'm an example of someone who got out of control). As far as a tranny, get a T5 from a junkyard. There are millions of them and they should do well with a mildly warmed over V8. Good luck.
  16. Yeah, don't worry. Ross is a good businessperson. I've bought quite a few things from him and have never regretted it.
  17. Well, John came down to my place in 100 degree heat a couple of days ago. A hot 383 driving for a couple of hours in that kind of heat? I would say it works just fine. It should though. It looked awfully expensive. By the way, pretty car John. You've given me a new appreciation for traffic cone orange.
  18. Having routed turbo plumbing in every which way in the Z engine bay many times over to get the best configuration, I would go with a large single turbo if I had done it all over again. With my twins, they produce boost so smoothly that I don't necessarily get that kick in the butt feeling--I'm not complaining though. As far as mounting the turbo so far forward, you will lose some thermal efficiency, so you might consider mounting it closer to the source of the exhaust. I would hate to lose that perfect spot for a huge intercooler right in front of the radiator. My question is, why the air to water? If it's a drag car, I guess you might benefit from cooler charge, but you could also do the same with spraying water/alcohol, or better yet, N2O on the air to air intercooler. Sounds like an interesting project. I love V8 turbos.
  19. That's really cool. Another Fd3s saved. Now all you have to do is get Courtney Hansen involved. She can't really work on cars, but I wouldn't mind her around the garage.
