Extreme LT1 upgrades, advise please..
Bartman replied to love-my-V8-280Z's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I didn't know what the Elliot LE2 Head kit was when I first read your post. Now that it appears my head gasket went out on me, I'm looking at head/cam packages as well. My goals are lower so I'm looking at the Elliot's LE1, the street package from Advanced Induction, or just mild porting with the LT4 hot cam kit. Have you checked out the Advance Induction packages as well? -
Oil Pressure & Water temperature Gauge
Bartman replied to Bartman's topic in Ignition and Electrical
I disconnected the wire at the sender and grounded it with my test light while suppying power to the corresponding wire at the gauge. This made the light on the test light turn on. So I figured the gauge is wired up correctly and the gauge itself was bad. I found another gauge on eBay for $15 including shipping and hooked it up right away (tried to buy one from a fellow HybridZ member but he wanted $100 plus shipping ). Both water temperature and oil pressure are working perfectly now. I guess the morale is be careful if you take your gauges apart. -
Blown Head Gasket = Ported Heads?
Bartman replied to Bartman's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I appreciate all the knowledge and advice. I've been researching and based on my goals and budget I'm thinking of getting one of the packages from Elliot's Portworks http://www.eportworks.com/LT1LE1.htm or Advanced Induction http://www.advancedinduction.com/AiProductsLT1.html. The LT4 Advanced Induction package made it to Grumpy's list, but Elliot didn't get a mention. Initially I was thinking LT4 hot cam kit and a mildly ported head, but now I think once of these packages would be a better choice. Any comments or advice on these packages or something else within the same budget? BTW - For anyone that one that wants to read a great deal of information regarding cylinder heads and porting check out this thread at Camaroz28 http://web.camaross.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-411824.html -
I just got my car back together after getting my AC system installed and it worked great. I drove it for around 2 hours in bumper to bumper traffic with the AC on without any problems. That night I decided to get on it and burned the tires up through first gear and a little more in second. Although it was great fun, I think that's when I blew the head gasket. Now the engine stumbles now and then, has a loud tick under acceleration, and when I checked out the engine after a short drive Saturday morning, there's an audible hissing type noise that seems to be coming from the left side of the engine (around the head). I haven't checked the water for oil or vice versa I just took it back home and parked it and then spent the weekend at the Long Beach Grand Prix. So if the head gasket is blown I'm going to take this opportunity to get some ported heads (or have mine ported), drop in a cam (maybe an LT4 hot cam), and maybe 1.6 ratio rockers as well. Any suggestions are welcome. My first big question regards the head porting. Could anyone give my specifics on what porting should be done? Should I buy a pair already ported or get mine done? What about one's on eBay? Here's a link to one on eBay now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/93-97-lt1-ported-aluminum-heads-camaro-firebird_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33617QQitemZ8054129807QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

My doors are rattling and I would like to get some new door weatherstripping. I can't find the post that was mentioned in this thread with part numbers to use. Can someone point me in the right direction?

I don't know if you saw my other post, but I installed my EL gauges at the same time as well (waiting for another water temp/oil press gauge before I install that face). It was pretty light outside when I took this picture, I think they look even better at night.

I finished the wiring and I brought my car in this morning to have the system evacuated, oil added, pressure tested and charged up. I was on pins and needles waiting for a call from my mechanic (hoping he would say it was done...not that it wouldn't hold pressure or something wasn't working correctly). Well I got the call, and it was to say that I now have a Z that blows cold air! I will post up some pic's in a couple of days, but if you have any specific items you want to see just let me know. It was a lot of work, but I think it will be worth it when the temperatures start creeping upwards. I guess now I'll have to dive into the bodywork...I've run out of other tasks and excuses.

I found the trailer pic for anyone that's interested. http://members.cox.net/b.dooley1/KGC10%20Skyline/loaded%20on%20trailer

You know what's coming, but it still cracked me up. Unfotunately it sounds like something I would do...but wait I have a dog.

PICS of work done today my b-day 4-1-06
Bartman replied to big-phil's topic in Fabrication / Welding
I got the auto-darkening helmet form Harbor Freight and it's definitely worth it. It's so much easier to be able to see through it whether you're welding or not. It will probably allow you to make even nicer welds -
tuffz update-exhaust & drive!
Bartman replied to 1 tuff z's topic in Gen III & IV Chevy V8Z Tech Board
Great job! All the hard work and effort pay off when you get to drive the car and it all works well together. Keep us posted on all the little things that need to get finished (I know how that stuff can linger on:icon52: ). -
The first link didn't work, but I watched the second one. Very cool...it looked like the Mustang got a quicker start and then you blew right by him. You might have posted it before, but could you remind me of your upgrades. Is your transmission stock? Have you had your setup dyno'ed? Oops, I see your dyno numbers in your signature...what upgrades have you done?

When I view "New Posts" I don't see threads that I just started or replied to, but if I view "Posts Last 24 Hrs" I see them. Is this by design?...it didn't used to work this way.

Here's a pic if the center panel in place with the lights on. As you can see, the sides of the knobs light up. Not to bad, but I think I'd rather have them light up blue. What do you think? I also installed most of the speed hut gauge faces, I just need to get another water temp/oil pressure gauge before I install that face.

I've removed my dash to install a Vintage Air System and I'm currently in the process of reinstalling it. While I was at it, I took apart my gauges and installed Speed hut Electro-Luminescent gauge faces. The good part is that I actually got my clock to work now (using info from another thread), the bad part is the Oil Pressure and Water Temperature gauge doesn't. I tried grounding the wires that connect to the sending units with no response from the gauge needles (I read that this should cause the needles to move). I used a test light and it lights up when I do this with the key turned on. Either there's a connection that I missed when I reinstalled or there's a problem with the gauge. How can I test the gauge or the wires that connect to the gauge (can I just provide a power and ground and expect to see the needle move)?

My Vintage Air Install is almost complete *PICS*

My Vintage Air Install is almost complete *PICS*
Bartman replied to qwik240z's topic in Miscellaneous Tech
My progress is pretty similar to yours. I've been working on reinstalling my dash and completing the wiring. I also bought a thermo-sleeve for AC line heat protection similar to the sock you installed. There are quite a few wires that are no longer used that I will take the time to clean up while I'm at it. Let us know how it works. -
Van, Haven't heard from you in quite a while. So you think a car that run's quarter's in the 13's or so would fit in? I'm guessing thats around what my car would be able to do.

Here's a link to an article from Hot Rod Magazine that has some great information. It mentions that the cast iron block is 88 lbs heavier than the aluminum block, but the aluminum block starts to become a liability to long-term health above 700 hp. It doesn't say you can't do it, and it will probably work well...at least for a while. The article also mentions a book that you should get if you're really interested in doing a build like this titled "How to Build High Performance LS1/LS6 V-8's" by Will Handzel. http://www.hotrod.com/howto/113_0504_block/index.html

My evaporator, condensor, and compressor are all installed. I got all the fittings figured out, cut my hoses, got the fittings crimped on, and installed everything. All I have left is to complete my wiring get my system charged up and see if it works. If anyone wants to see any pictures just let me know.
-
From what I've read the cast iron block is preferred on high horsepower applications. If you didn't see this, Grumpy posted some info on a couple of LS1 build-ups in this thread. Look at the project psi-chotic in post #7.

Looks Great. Good color combination and a nice deep polished lip. Your car in general looks very clean, is it stock? Give us the scoop on your car.

Which tail light panel is that...Did you make that yourself? It looks great! Details please.
