  1. A quick update. I almost completed a swap from the standard Univeral Half Shafts to the Wolf Creek CVs. It was mostly straight forward. IT does call for the rubber boots to be pulled back so grease can be inserted on both sides of the CV. The first rubber boot I tried to pull back was stuck on the CV so it had be confused, I thought I might have misunderstood the instruction. So I temporarily gave up and just pushed the grease through from one side and worked it through the joint with a waving action. But then one of the other boots came lose so it confirmed the instruction was correct. This was a great result because I hated not being able to see if the grease had made it all the way through the joint. The other major finding was the application of this modification over the top of the WRX STI R180 mod. I don't know if anyone else has tried this combination. I think John.C's input shafts are brilliant but I think they protrude slightly further out from the diff than the original input shafts. This isn't an issue with the original half shafts but as soon as you add the adaptor and CV the clearance to right control arm is elliminated. I trimmed the control arm with a grinder to create some clearance. I will try to remember to take some photos before I finish the job. I also note the CVs save 800 grams per side. I get the double whammy of 1.6KG overall car weight saving plus a 800 gram unsprung weight saving per side.
  2. The ECU requires a timing source. Check if there is anything connecting the coil to the ECU? I have a wire wrapped around my coil lead connected to the ECU. Good luck.
  3. Here is my road registered race 140z plus my original 280zx that started my obsession 20 years ago. The Race car pics are at Mt Panorama Bathurst, arguably one of the best tracks in the world. Kara.bmp
  4. You know you own a Datsun when you spend all day on a forum with strangers half way around the world instead of doing your work. You know you own a Datsun when strangers complement you on the exhaust note and ask whether it is a V8. You know you own a Datsun when you are watching Police reality TV, spot a quarter of a hatch sticking out of a swamp and correctly pick it as a 280zx without seeing the rest of the car.
  5. I purchased a pair of 12v hair dryers from a boating store. You could probably get something similar from a camping store. I have actually disconnected the old heater unit and rivited each of the two hair dryers into the windscreen vents. They fitted perfectly. You need to be careful with the fuses and wiring as they draw a fair bit of current. But it works for me........Then again I live in Queensland which is a sub tropical climate so maybe you shouldn't take my word for it
  6. I wouldn't describe 1:06 as awesome. It is certainly respectable but the best of the S-30s can break into the 59s so I still have a way to go. But considering the difference in budget I am certainly satisfied. No I hadn't planned to attend within the next few months. I have only just received the motorkhana calendar for the year so I am still planning out how it all fits together. I need to squeeze my modifications into that schedule too.
  7. They don't seem to run very hot so I think it should be OK. But I am not worried anyway because its not really designed as a road car. They are only really there to satisfy the regulation. It might not be the most efficient way of demisting the screen but my hair has never looked better. Any way I like the insulation smell: Is there a problem officer? Why were you swerving over the road? Are you high on something? No no its just my hair dryers.
  8. Just a thought: Wouldn't the harder material wear out the shifter forks faster than the plastic one? I assume Nissan designed it with the plastic bush so the plastic bush wears out and needs replacement but the shifter fork shouldn't. Happy to hear other opinions. By the way I waited a little too long to replace mine and the plastic became brittle and ground up in the gearbox. So I Can certainly see advantages of the brass item.
  9. Here are the links to my videos from my latest runs at Lakeside:
  10. +1 for the konigs or Minilites. If you car is period look go for 15 or 16inch. If your car is modernised go for 17inch. Go for charcoal inner with chrome / polished rim. Here we also have Superlites but probably not a good option for you there.
  11. Yeah as much as I can. My last occasion was May 2011 and managed 95% of my laps in the 1:06 bracket.... I wish it were a regularity. 1:06 is not super quick but is respectable. I am still aiming for something like 1:03 or better when I finish my latest set of modifications. Realistically that will be a target for 2013.
  12. Its been a while since I posted. Since then I have: 1.Changed from the standard battery to an AGM battery and moving it behind the passenger seat. 2.Replaced my old cracked dash with a fibreglass one. I removed the heavy old heater system and replaced with two 12v hair dryers plugged directly into the windscreen vents. It saves me over 10KG. I am part way through an engine rebuild, aiming for another 30 or 40 RWHP I am part way through a major change to the induction system. Replacing the 280zx EFI with tripple dellortos as throttle bodies and EFI over the top. I have removed all the chokes from the dellortos and I am having them machined out to 45mm. I have already received the 45mm butterflies. I can't wait to install the conversion. I plan to run a Megasquirt ECU. I have received the CV conversion kit and will be installing it over the next few weekends. I have an alloy radiator and electric fan that I will install when I swap the engines over. I have attached a few recent pictures of the car. The first is at the Mt Cotton Hill Climb. The second is the fibreglass dash. Finally is my most recent track day at the Holden Driver Training Centre Norwell.
  13. I recently did the throttle body mod. But this meant the space for the boot was too small for the original. So I got some exhaust pipe in the correct diameter, cut it at an angle and welded it back together to get the elbow. I even welded a couple of those smaller pipes on the side for the throttle bypasses. It works well.
  14. Hi, I have had my Subi LSD in for a few months now and its great. However my LSD is a 3.9 I think. I did a bit of a search but I can't see anyone that talks about swapping the Subi LSD centre into a datsun R180? Has anyone tried to swap the Subi LSD centre into a datsun R180? I know I will still need the subi side shafts I got from JohnC but I want the 4.6 ratio from my old diff. any ideas?
  15. I have another motorkhana tomorrow so I won't be doing much on the car other than getting it ready. Then next week I have a sprint event at Stanthorpe (The missus is going wine tasting ) But I have mods planned / under way. Ok here is the list (Not in any particular order): 1.I will be changing from the standard battery to an AGM battery and moving it behind the passenger seat. 2.I have another plenum. It has already been ported and polished but I want to do a little more work on it. Then it will be installed. 3.I have some small rectangular headlights. These will go in the same spot above the front bumper where the 280z had their blinkers on the US models. Then I can remove the original headlights completly. 4.I have made some fiber glass fenders that include a filled in headlight bucket (saves about 20lb per side). I just need to paint them and fit them. (See the pictures) 5.I have just started making a fiber glass dash. Not sure how much weight it will save, but it will be significant. 6.I will remove the window mechansims and glass and replace with sliding perspex. 7.Replace the standard fan with an electric one.
  16. I just had my 240z weighed. It came in at 2314 pounds. Thats with the L28 and a full cage. I still have some work to do to reduce that weight some more. I am aiming for 2200 pounds also.
  17. Go back take the bits and leave an envelope with some cash in its place.....definately not stealing

  19. Good luck looks like a solid car. By the way I think the profile is too low on the tires you have chosen.
  20. Anybody got a P65 plenum from an L28E they would sell?
  21. Well I got my set a couple of weeks before Easter. Made the modifications and installed the subi diff. Had it all in just in time for Mt Panorama I don't know what my top speed was but with the 3.9 diff 280zx 5th gear and 16 inch wheels I was doing 6500 RPM (I know there are speed calculators around but something is wrong because they tell me I was doing 150MPH Which clearly I was not. But I Was going quite fast all the same. The diff was and still is flawless. Even did a motorkhana (kinda like your Autocross) less than a week after the mountain. John C if you ever make it down under I owe you a beer.
