There's a new kid in town: http://www.betamotorsports.com/products/index.html

I'm skeptical. Where did the matching fuel come from? NO2 by itself won't support combustion unless it has a certain ratio of fuel to go with it. My guess is that doing the above will result in a mixture that won't ignite.

1977 L24E with Bosch L-Jetronic Symptoms: Fully warmed up (~10 minutes of driving), light load (up to ~1/2 throttle) stumble/miss. Cold or cool, no stumble/miss. More then 1/2 throttle, no stumble miss. Full throttle no stumble/miss. Idle no stumble/miss. Checked/Fixed: Static compresison good in all cylinders and all within 5% of each other. New generic fuel injectors. New engine temp sensor. No vacume leak found. New fuel filter. Unknown: Fuel pump. Fuel pressure. Diagnosis: Have been told that the stumble is a normal emisisons lean trait. I don't want to believe that. Anyone have any good ideas? - John

Mount & Header really close to steering shaft
johnc replied to deMideon's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
.001 is plenty of clearance to the steering shaft as long as nothing ever touches. -
With a 2.39 first gear, 4.38 rear gear, and a 25.2" diameter rear tire, my car would absolutely suck at drag racing. First gear is good to 50 mph in my car.

Nissan Comp (Dan Oldenberg) 8 quart oil pan, turbo oil pump with big springs, blocked off oil filter bypass, opened up return orifices in the head. That's it for oiling system changes. FYI... its not a fair comparison using my engine and an RB26. My engine is NA, the RB is turbo'd. My engine was built for a specific set of rules and its being compared with essentially an unlimited RB26. Maybe if we looked at one of the old Electromotive turbo engines and compared it with the RB26.

Damn! We both spent way too much time on this! Funny how we both had the EMTs reviving Kennedy. -

To elaborate on what Jamie said: Chassis dynos and engine dynos do not measure horsepower. Engine dynos (load cells) measure the ability of an engine to work against a load at some rpm. From that load number a calculation is performed that gives a horsepower number as its product. The basic calculation uses rpm and load. Chassis dyno measure the ability of a vehicle to accelerate a mass. From that rate of acceleration, a calculation is performed that gives a horsepower number as its product. The basic calculaiton uses rpm, mass, and time. If you took your engine out of the car and put it on an engine dyno, the horsepower numbers would be the same because mass and time are not part of the horsepower calculation on engine dynos. Conversly, because mass and time are part of chassis dyno calculations, things (weight and MOI) that have nothing to do with power production (combustion) are part of the horsepower calculation. So, the correct answer is: 1. Your car will not lose any horsepower (as measured by SAE J1995). 2. Your car will accelerate slower.
-
Steady state horsepower (let's say 200hp at 6,000rpm) is unaffected by driveline mass, MOI, or vehicle weight. So, your car hasn't lost any horsepower by increasing the weight of the flywheel. But, you car's rate of acceleration has been decreased because of the additional weight and by the increased MOI. Is it a significant decrease, probably not. You'll just notice the car revs a bit slower.

Track day shoes and pads?
johnc replied to gramercyjam's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Its called a "Sippy Hole" and you should know all about that coming from the South. -
I'm thinking out loud... Why are we assumming that crank moves forward and back? Could the crank just be pushed forward and stay there? I'll be the mechanic used a pry bar to move it back and then pushed it forward again? Maybe in the car the crank is just always pushed to the forward limit (from pressure palte usage) and there's no force pushing it back?

drag suspension and brake issues
johnc replied to stony's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
13 inch REAR rotors? You're going to have some serious brake balance problems unless you've got the piston and master cylinder sizes all figured out. Isn't your car a dedicated drag car? From your descritption it sounds like you'll need to run the spacers because you need to get the wheel centers to clear the calipers. Is that true? If so, you can machine the rotor adapter and the front caliper mounts to mover the caliper inboard. -
Sorry, I don't have any better pictures and the customer is out racing the car now. I don't have access to it to take more pictures.

You can't and yes I do.

Unfortunatly there doesn't appear to be any certifications for automotive type welding. In general, industries develop the specifications then AWS takes them to create an overall standard and a certification process. The standard pipe certifications are for pipe's 6" in diameter or large and involve bevels, etc. that are not needed for roll cages. Some of the pressure welding certifications "might" be applicable, but there's so much extra involved that its not worth the expense. Lincoln Electric is in the process of developing a 4130 tube welding certification for automotive size tubing. I welded up a few dozen coupons back in October 2002 for them and just got a certificate back saying I passed the intial pull tests on the tubes. But, that's the only automotive/motorsports related welding certification that I know of.

welding, piping tools, and etc info on what tools to get...
johnc replied to a topic in Miscellaneous Tech
Its true, its very true. Use that kind of stuff for practice, but don't put it on a car. Buy some 1.5" diameter .095 wall mild steel tubing. Cut it into 4" lengths and then fish mouth the ends using a file. Weld the tubes perpendicular to each other (like tube joints in a roll bar). You'll learn how to make the fish mouths correctly (nice tight fits to the other tubes) and how to weld tube joints. When you're happy with 90 degree joints (make sure they are exactly 90 degrees), start doing 45, 30, and 60 degree tube joints. This kind of practice will help you become proficient much quicker then butt welding exhaust tubing. -
SCCA doesn't care if its TIG, MIG, or Stick welded. The welds just have to be consistent and all the way around the joint, with good penetration on both tubes, no undercut, and no craters. Your big issue is that the S&W cage may not have the correct tube material (DOM only, no ERW), diameters, or wall thickness and may not meet the design criteria SCCA specifies for main and front hoop bends and floor plate square inches and thickness. Buy the rule book if you want to run with SCCA.

No, no, no, no, no, no... I keep hearing the Beverly Hillbillie's them running through my head. Jon's s econd suggestion is so much better: Do it right the first time. I can't frickin' believe some of the crap I see that wears the holy "JDM" moniker. -
I like my 12mpg around town V10 F350 SD and my 12mpg around town 1964 Lincoln Continental and my 12 gallon per hour 1970 Datsun 240Z. You guys all buy and drive Hybrids so I've got more gas. FYI... my home, work, home commute is 5 miles total. I use less fuel every day then any tree hugging, granola eating, earth shoe wearing, tamboreen banging, haven't showered in a week, all natural fiber wearing, tofu eating, herb smoking, sierra club joining, six children, environmentalist.

I thought with your search for used women's panties you were already living an "alternate lifestyle"...

I've got templates, no drawings or measurements. Use 4130 .100 steel sheet and control the heat when welding it.
