grannyknot
Trying to retrofit and older 80's fuel rail with 5/16" steel hose barbs and up date it to AN fittings, is there way convert without welding? All the AN fittings I see seem to be made only to lock onto PTFE/Teflon hoses. Thanks, Chris
Miles
Edit: 2:43pm 12/18 16 using a different link If you mean adapt to 5/16 fuel line then this will work: https://www.holley.com/products/plumbing_an_fittings_and_hose/adapters/special_purpose_adapters/parts/165056ERL Edited December 18, 2016 by Miles
TimZ
If you mean adapt to 5/16 fuel line then this will work: https://www.summitracing.com/parts/ear-165056erl/overview/ Does that link go to some weird search engine for anybody else, or do I need to go searching for malware? I checked other links on this site and did not have the same issue. Tried creating the correct link and got the same issue... The link was trying to point to Earl's Fittings part number 156056er Edited December 18, 2016 by TimZ

If not, cut the barbed end off and use a AN Tube adapter fitting. You can either use a SS compression fitting or a flared collar fitting. Male or Female fittings available. Easy Peasy. These are compression fittings, with aluminium ends. . This link should work just as an example.: https://www.summitracing.com/int/search/part-type/tube-adapter-fittings/fitting-size-1/minus-6-an/fitting-size-2/5-16-in Test: https://www.summitracing.com/ XRP carries a good lin of special purpose fittings. Good quality and American made: Link to XRP full catalog. PDF format. Page 36 part # 992005 would likely work. http://www.xrp.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/XRP-new-Product-Catalog.pdf You can get compression tube adapters and AN ( flare style ) SS Tube collar adapters as well. I saw some in a post about a week ago. I'll see if I can find the link. Edited December 18, 2016 by Chickenman
Chickenman
Frack Me!! I don't know WTF is going on, but I keep getting redirected to that damned VIGLINK search site. Edit: Just did a search and it looks like VIGLINK is an affiliate to some Forums for advertising... It's popping up all over the place. Something for the Forum administrators to address??? Edit2 : Just started a thread on the Forums " Website problems " asking about this.... Edit3: Might have been the new Video Card or Game I just installed. VIGLINK seems to be associated with Google advertising and Google Drive. Interesting because my new Gigabyte GEForce 1050TI graphics card wanted to install Google Chrome, Toolbar and Google Drive. I opted out but it seems it still installed this advertising and tracking software. It was either the video card drivers or an old version of Splinter Cell. Either way, it's a PITA!!! Miles
I changed the link above from Summit to Holley. Also here is the Holley Earl's page. https://www.holley.com/brands/earls/ Or you can plug the Earls p/n 165056ERL into Google Edited December 18, 2016 by Miles

Ben280
Well after an exciting jaunt through the bowels of the internet and it's weird tracking nonsense, I'll post up another solution for 5/16 hardline to AN. You can use a -5AN Tube Nut and a -5/-6 Female Union. Similar to the previous solution, but one I'm personally familiar with. Either way you will need to do a 37º flare on the fuel line. Summit makes a tool for this, but I HIGHLY recommend the ratcheting RIGID tool. https://www.amazon.com/Ridgid-41162-377-Flare-Tool/dp/B001HWNS40 (for the love of pete, PLEASE go to the right link) Yes its spendy, BUT a good clean flare is essential to a quality fit and avoiding fuel leaks. Chickenman
Found the link for SS fittings ( if you need them for high pressure ) . It's a Swagelock #500-6-5AN. . Which is what I assume Chris wants to do. The VW/Audi guys are using this Swagelock part on the 8mm ( 5/16" ) factory 1.8T fuel rails. I'm thinking they must be using -6 hose as well. Only issue I can see is how do you go from a -5 female coupling that mates with this to a -6 nipple that fits -6 AN AA braided hose. Might be more trouble than it's worth. http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?8345249-How-to-add-AN-6an-fittings-to-your-stock-fuel-rail&p=102021753#post102021753 Edited December 19, 2016 by Chickenman

That Swagelock part is a good idea if you can find a -5 female to -6 male adapter. The Swagelock part is probably all stainless, whereas I'm 99% sure the Earl's piece uses a brass compression ring, which is less desirable if you want to run E85 (otherwise it's fine though). grannyknot
Well, there does seem to be some options, the barbs on the ends of the steel fuel lines that come from the fuel rail are pretty short and stubby, I think I will only have one chance to get it right. Thanks for the ideas.
Ben280
After seeing the images, tube nuts won't work, and I don't think anything that requires a flare to be put on the end of the line will be possible. You might be better off welding fittings onto the rails.
grannyknot
The real reason I would like to install AN fittings is so I can replace all the rubber/Neoprene (EPDM or NBR) fuel lines with the newer PTFE / Teflon fuel lines, they don't emit fuel vapour, are not effected by all the additives that are in gasoline these days and are said not to degrade over time like regular fuel line. Do you think PTFE/Teflon hose will slip over the barbs of the fuel lines pictured in post#16 and be able to be sealed with a hose clamp or permanent pinch clamp or is the line just too ridgid? Chickenman
You can get high Quality fuel hose from XRP, Goodridge and Earls. Should not have any issues with modern fuel or alcohols. It's the cheap brands from offshore brands that have issues. ( Personally I don't like Russel products ). You don't really need PTFE lined hoses for modern pump fuels ( including E85 ) with quality hoses.... IMHO. CPE lined Nitrile fuel hose should not have any permeability issues. ( Synthetic CPE can handle Methanol and Nitromethane...so Ethanol E85 and modern pump fuels should be no issue ) With that in mind you could go to something like XRP's crimp lock CPE hoses. Would push over your stock fuel nipples, secure with fully banded SS worm clamp or crimp clamps. Makes life a lot easier. http://www.xrp.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/XRP-new-Product-Catalog.pdf Even Earl's cheaper line of Super Stock hose has been reformulated to handle modern fuels including E85. https://www.holley.com/brands/earls/products/plumbing_an_fittings_and_hose/hose/ Goodridge hose lineup. Type 200 with synthetic CPE is good for Methanol and Nitro Methane. http://goodridge.brakes-hoses-fittings.co.uk/goodridge-hose-types.php Edited December 21, 2016 by Chickenman
