auxilary
auxilary, those tires are great, unfortunately they are discontinued and weren't replaced in that size. The only Yoko option right now is advan a048 but at 230/ tire it's a bit expensiveyeah, those are old pictures from 2003. Very few still make 225/50/15 tires. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/TireSearchResults.jsp?zip-code=&width=225/&ratio=50&diameter=15&rearWidth=255/&rearRatio=40&rearDiameter=
ryant67
Took a couple of weeks longer than I thought it would, but I got my wheels and tires on today. 15x8 ET0 wheels and Toyo R888R in 225/50r15. No rub so far, but it's cutting things pretty close. Maybe on big bumps or extremely hard cornering there might be contact. I'm lowered about 2" on the old MSA "blue" springs. Here are some pics for you to show fitment. Edited April 25, 2017 by ryant67
auxilary
That looks great. Those are some really wide 225s to sit like that on an 8" wheel. On a separate note: what muffler is that? I want to do a 2-in 2-out with an X pipe in that configuration

I want to do a 2-in 2-out with an X pipe in that configuration Thanks! The muffler is my attempt at replicating the old school vertical stack. It's a Magnaflow muffler turned sideways with staggered slashed tips welded on. I'm pretty torn on it - looks killer from some angles, and awkward from others. If I were to do it now, I would just buy the Zstory system. Or in your case, maybe try and source a Fujitsubo or Spirit Garage (Japan) exhaust backbox, as they both do the vertical stack in a 2in2out configuration. Here is an old pic showing it off a bit better. Edited April 25, 2017 by ryant67
mossy74
IMG_4078.JPG Big fan of this car, I think those are 225/50 kumho tires on the rear Any other choices in 225/50/15 other than what's on tire rack? Would love to get a tire like Toyota ra1 in 225/50 Thats my car, the above picture is when the resto was completed with 16x8 wats on 225/45/16 tyres, its now on 15x8 0 offset wats and 225/50/15 tyres

mossy74
Why did you go back to 15" The ride was harsh a bit harsh with the 16's and they looked a bit big from some angles, very happy with the 15inch watanabes.
badbusinessman
I probably should have gone with 8" rims, but alas, I have 15x9 rims on the way. I need to order tires, and it really looks like my only option is 225/50/15. Will these suffice? It looks like my only options are the Kumho Ecsta or the R888 (but those are for track). Any recommendations? I can't find 235+ at all that aren't slicks.
seattlejester
Not sure what you mean by only option. 225 will go on a 7 inch, a 225 on a 9 is going to be quite a stretch. You might consider looking at something with a taller sidewall to compensate to keep the wheel/tire diameter in a realistic range if stretch is your game. 225/60/15's have quite a bit of choice for example, or if tire width is desired you can do other sizes like 245/40/15. You just have to step down to miata/E30 diameter. In the 24 inch category there just isn't too many choices.
calZ
225s are just about perfect on a 9 inch wheel. On our racecar we run 225/45R15s on 15x9 wheels and the sidewalls are just a tiny bit in from vertical. They're stretched, but most definitely in the range that they improve grip and not in the "hella low stance" way.
badbusinessman
Hmnm, ok, thanks for the info. Not sure why I didn't look up to 225/60/15. I guess I'm curious if that will be too much sidewall, or not. I will be running coilovers and flares. If the 225/50 isn't too much stretch, maybe that is just the better route? This is all new to me, so I'm learning as I go. seattlejester
It really depends on the tire, I've had 205 tires wider then 225's of another make, General makes tires wider, falken seems to make tires skinnier. A 225 on a 7 inch is not bowed in, it sits with the sidewall vertical on bridgestones, and kumho's might have a bit of a bulge, but I almost attribute that to just a softer tire. Hard for me to imagine pulling one side an entire inch further out. Or that same tire two inches. I guess it also depends on the rim. You have to determine your purpose for the car. If you want it to look good then your tire choice is going to depend on what aesthetic you are going for. If you want the car to perform then it is pretty much about getting the most tire with the desired compound, probably less sidewall, unless you are targeting a certain weight then it would be about the tire compound. The cross section seems to be a 225/50/15 for looks/performance/street. Still a bit of side wall so you get cushioning, low enough sidewall so it doesn't appear tall, good width for stock bodied cars. If you want width you can step up to a wider taller tire, just trying to stay in the 23-25 inch range would be advantageous not to make the car look too far from what it was designed around. Up to you how you play around with the width, you will find that some sizes are popular and have more choices because they came like that on certain cars etc just fish around. gnosez
Single Point Jack Plates, Low Profile Jack, or 2X6 pine (4). My 240 oil pan sits lower than the crossmember and I can get a Harbor Freight $100 jack under the TC box and diff. I run 16/8/245 all around on a lowered car. I run RA1s on the race car since we can't run slicks in my Group which are 225/25/15(F & R) and and here's a picture at full droop (running with slicks during an HPDE - 225/45/15 -F & 275/35/15- R) Fixed measurement points (center of fender inner lip, rocker, TC rod box, crossmember, diff) would allow us to compare car to car. Would you mind posting some examples? 225/60-15 is (to me) the perfect size tire for the Z, but all I can find are crappy all-seasons (or hoosier bias ply), just want to make sure I’m not missing anything. 235/50 R888R is a bit of a compromise bit that is a wiiiiiiiiiiiide tire. 225/50 R888R is my leading choice now. seattlejester
Hmm I'm not finding any. I'm not sure what tire size I was looking at. Maybe 215/60/15? http://www.1010tires.com/Tires/215-60R15 Couple more choices, no ultra summers though.
73Ed
I searched this topic myself for a long time and finally bit the bullet and went with 225/50 15 Toyo Proxes R888r. I do not like the thread pattern on the Kuhmo all season tires so this was the only option at a decent price. I don't think I will be taking this car to the track any time soon but I really like the look of this setup and I needed to get new tires when I bought the car. Instead of spending money for tires on the original Mag wheels I just got wheels and tires all at once. I know these tires will not last many miles, but I don't plan on daily driving this car. I don't know why it was difficult to get examples of the fitment on 15x8 Rota RKRs being as it's such a popular setup for 240zs (S30s in general). My car was lowered on Tokico 1050 springs (discontinued) I'm not sure what the drop is as it was done by previous owner. I did have to roll the rear fenders a bit as there is a bit of rub when it goes over bumps. Excuse the dirty car. Ed. I could have easily fit a bigger tire in the back but the front only had a pinky finger gap between spring perch and tire. This is with stock suspension with new struts and lowering springs. I had run into the same issue as you while researching a tire size. If you want to run a bigger tire then you are going to need to get aftermarket coilovers. If you don't want to do that then you can run the 225/50 but may have to trim the spring purch. Personally my car sits to high with lowering springs and will be going with adjustable coilovers all around so I can run bigger tires and get a better stance. What brand of tires are you using on the stock with lower springs
