Show me your hood scoop

Just noticed a slight "ding" in my hood from the air filter hold down (grrrr) and was wondering what folks are doing for air filteration on CARBED SBC/SBF Z's

My set up is JTR with 350, Edelbrock Performer RPM and Edelbrock 750 carb and a oval billet air filter. It barely taps the underside of the hood but has created a ding. Good thing I have't painted the car yet or I'd be PO'd.

I was running into the same problem as well. To solve this issue (not a direct answer to your problem) I fabricated a filter holder out of fiberglass that conformed around the carb and hood underside enough that a 3" (by 14" K&N) filter will fit into the fiberglass holder. The odd teardrop shape you see here is only due to the fact that the filter must fit between the strut tower bracing "V" going to the firewall, but the jest of the pieces were to allow a reasonably tall element to be fitted under the hood without rubbing it. As you can see, the front of the holder drops down so that the element surrounds the front carb bowl, which was necessary due to the hood sloping downward as it went forward. The wing nut holding all these pieces together (lower piece/element/upper piece) resides in a deep divot centered over the carb stud, thus it (and the stud) protrudes no higher than the element's cover plate. I know, the first question is "how can this hold up to the under hood temperatures?" It does get a tiny bit more flexible at normal engine operating temperatures, but that's about it. It has held up fine for the 10 odd years I've used it.

Yours would be fairly far back from the front wouldn't it? The carb/filter that is.

If so it may well be in the low pressure are over the bonnet, where air will go out rather than in. Of course you could fit a really high profile bonnet scoop that would bring air in. Up to you how you want to style your car.

You could go to the the yard and get one of those volvo intake inlet tubes. Looks like the peice that comes with a carb or TB supercharger set up. There are some posts somewere discussing that they cover the carb. THen you could remote mount another cone type air filter. Just a thought.

On my 72 240 with a 400SB, I ran into the same problem. I made two plates 3/16th inches thick and put them between the frame and the lower engine cradle to drop the engine height. I had no problems and was very happy with the results. I took the bolts out of one side then loosened the other side so I could slide the plate in place and then repeted it for the plate on the other side.

I ran into the same problem with my SBF. I attempted to use the stock twin snorkle air filter, but the hood wouldn't close. I found that a 2"x14" aftermarket chrome filter fit with no problems.
