I have never been involved in an accident. I use my 20/20 hindsight to drive. When I was about to crash, I press a "pause" button that is within reach of my thumb. If I really did crash, I hit pause button, choose "restart", then my day starts all over again from the point I was about to get in the car.

Hey, you don't by chance have one for sale do you? My pause button is getting sticky and restart is now fast forward. I'll give 5 dollars for it. Come on thats a great deal. :)

I think you dont know the whole situation and you should keep you opinions to yourself.

thanks

Well then maybe you should post the rest of the story on the web somewhere so I will know it.

If you don't want to be held up to public scrutiny then why go public with it? Isn't this what you want, attention?

But like I said. Sorry there has to be a name attached to this video. It is not fair to pick on you personally. When I first watched that video, as soon as it went out on the road I started to cringe. When you guys started into the tunnel I thought this doesn't look good. And when I saw only cars going on tow trucks and not people on stretchers I thought "well hope that lesson wasn't too expensive". I am honestly glad no one got seriously hurt (if that is the case). The specifics may be a mystery but the situation was all too predictable.

But if you get defensive, fail to gain a little humility and only examine the excuses then you are bound to relive the situation.

Let's not let this get ugly guys... We were all young once. Every single accident I'd been involved with until I was 22 years old (And there were MANY) was indirectly my fault or directly my fault... Driver error. It's called experience, or the lack of it, and the more seat time you have over your lifetime of driving will only make you better.

The video clearly shows a number of things that went wrong around Austin. The two biggest mistakes were his distance to the car in front of him, and his speed entering what looks like a blind tunnel. Austin, if you want to enlighten us on this, We're all ears. Otherwise, we have only the video evidence to go by.

Inexperience is what it is... Plain and simple. That is a reality. That is NOT a slam on anyone. It is what it is Austin. Your video was posted and people WILL comment on its contents. If you can't handle the questions, my recommendation is simply not to post at all.

Your comments early on were the right comments to make... Take it to the track, sign up for as many driver's instructional days, and learn to handle your car. But take the advice the others gave about putting footage of driving on the street seriously. Imagine if you'd been involved in something where someone was injured by your car for some reason... This could have been a LOT worse than it was. It wasn't. No injury, and you and others live and learn from it.

Lets make this a positive guys... Put yourselves in his shoes...

Mike

Okay to elighten everybody and some of the all knowing and responsible people unlike myself, that drive 5 under and never make mistakes....

I made this video to show my car after i wrecked it, it was a compilation so i could watch it from time to time and remember it, an inspiration for my 240z. I wasnt the one who went public with it. And i am not mad at them at all for it. Two of my friends both posted it up.

And first of all i will admit that YES, the wreck most certainly could have been avoided. We were traveling too fast in an area that we didnt know. But the reality of any situation is sure you can look back and say "oh no i would have NEVER been so irresponsible to do something like that" "man its so easy to see they are gonna wreck, what a bunch of idiots." But think about stuff you have done in your life.

And YES i have learned something, I doubt i will do something quite like that again. i have put way to much time into my 240z that im building to ever put it in such danger. I will be making more appearences at the track and driving schools......

BUT now heres the entire story for you gossipers to talk about and have fun with, it doesnt bother me too much at all.

There was a car meet in the mountains for a local car club. The ride was all planned out and we had a police escort to the blue ridge parkway. Hundreds of cars there. They had a helicopter rented to take footage and a DVD was going to be compiled of the ride. My car was choosen as one of the featured cars for the video. (The video was never finished due to the helicopter footage getting messed up but thats a whole nother story). If you want the trailor you can find it at http://www.hightach.com --- Fast forward. It was finally the end of the day (around 6:00 or so, i had been driving since 5 in the morning). Since we were all from charlotte the group in the wreck decided to ride home together. The videotape... well we had been taping from earlier but for the wreck i actually didnt know he was taping he had been reviewing stuff and messing around wit hthe camera. The cars in the group were and in order: A black tt 350z, me, a silver tt 350z, a lancer, a 240sx, and a ford lightening. I was BY FAR the youngest in the group most were in there early 30's. The tunnel was around a blind curve as you can tell and the inside was very slick.

The 350z hit the water and brakes and started to spin. i thought he was going to come around on me and i was going to broadside him. This was the only thing that was really running through my mind as I had never been in a bad wreck before. I really didnt want to hit that car especially with a passenger in it. I too hit my brakes to slow as much as i could because i had no idea what the 350 was going to do. This caused me, of course, to lock up and slide into the tunnel. The 350z in back of me then slammed into me i would say at fullspeed and knocked my car to the otherside of the tunnel where i ricocheted to the other side again, in front of the black 350z, and slide out of the tunnel. i have no idea what else happened behind me but i know it was a mess.

Looking back i strongly believe that had the 350 not spun and i had not hit my brakes i would have made it through hte tunnel. You may not believe me but i knew the limits of my 260 pretty damn well. But all that is hindsight and looking back, me being in the sam situation, I WOULD HAVE DONE THE EXACT SAME THING. I hit nobody in the wreck and nobody was hurt, that is worth far more then my car.

It was a bad series of events on a bad day, i dont really put anybody to blame.

NOW pick up your stones and throw away, but i doubt any of you are very perfect either. in fact, most of the stuff i have heard is more ignorance then you have blamed me for, since you have seen a 5 sec video clip. But its not too bad, you should have read the stuff people on zcar.com wrote.

But anyway Im home for hte weekend from college and Im going to go out to the garage to work on my 240z. Which I might add will be twice as fast as the 260z. Kinda scary huh ;)

This is the important bit. You learned your lesson. None of us are immune from stupidity. I'm sure that you will find the track days MUCH more fulfilling than driving too fast in canyons.

The point I think Pop is trying too hard to make is that the accident wouldn't have happened had you not been in a group that was driving too fast on an unfamiliar canyon road.

I'm not Mr. Safety who drives 5 under, but I have come to realize that when you get a group of people driving fast, and especially if that group contains even ONE competitive person, it's a recipe for trouble. Speeding is one thing, but when you're trying to keep up with the guy in front of you, that's when the **** really hits the fan. Not saying that's what happened to you. I'm saying that's what I've experienced.

agreed. I have spead ridiculously fast solo and never had a problem (except with cops which is why i don't do it any more) but i have ntoiced when i am in a group going at any speed above 65 it gets a little out of hand, lots mroe accel and brake and curves too fast. It just isnt good. Friends take your thinking side of the brain (for driving) away imho.

This is like pulling teeth...

Austin, you explained exactly what happened and you are probably correct in your presumtion that had the 350Z in front of you not lost it, you'd have been fine. This is EXACTLY what I stated, and we're not throwing stones.

The absolute MOST important thing in this is the fact that you A: Admit you were at fault to the extent you did (And I seriously applaud this! :2thumbs: ) and you know what you WON'T do next time. I've got TWO stepsons who will argue that none of the accidents they were involved in were their faults and they will drive circles around me, Jon M., John T., Mark I. or John C. BOTH these kids learned NOTHING from their collective accidents. You have, and in my eyes, you're leaps and bounds ahead of your peers... Congratulations.

We're paying you a compliment here, and I hope you take it as such and move on!

Mike
