Administrators BRAAP Posted September 23, 2007 Administrators Share Posted September 23, 2007 Is it worth it to keep the heater / blower in the car when I re-assemble everything? What has everyone here done? Thanks in advance for any replies! Are you serious? Have you been tipping back Grandpas Cough syrup? If you are coming to us because you can’t figure out if you need any sort of climate control in your car at any point that you may in that car, you probably should just hand the keys and signed title over to one of us. Possibly could you have left out some vital information relating to your question that would help us offer forth to you information so that you in turn could go about making a rational well informed logical educated decision? That is like asking if the tires should be reinstalled on the car when reassembling it? Yes if you want to drive it, no if you don’t want to drive it. Mikelly
Damn, I guess you guys will put me on the cross, because I removed mine years ago... Of course, It's a track car and won't have side windows or other related creature comforts. 78280Z, you're in NewYork, where it gets cold in the winter... You'll at minimum need a defroster for the windshield... In Va. this is an inspection requirement. Mike
DavyZ
Damn, I guess you guys will put me on the cross, because I removed mine years ago... Of course, It's a track car and won't have side windows or other related creature comforts. BINGO! That's just what I was thinking about. A dedicated track car certainly doesn't need it, but I would think a street car should have one. I don't think sarcastic answers prove anything here. The guy has an honest question, really. There wasn't enough detail in the original question to properly answer it. So, what is the car going to be used for? My car is primarily for the street and an occasional track day. I want the "creature comforts" haha, like the defroster. Heck, I'm thinking about AC since I moved to the Carolinas. Davy
Dudeboy
I snatched the ac, heater and blower out, because I knew i was not running AC. But, there were few times coming home later in the evening a defroster was needed when the car was running. In my search for alternatives, I came across the Flex a lite mojave heater and plenum (the plenum is just a hard plastic piece to attach hoses to connect to defrost channel a bit costly). I am trying to figure out how I am going to mount, as soon as I get back in the garage. My car will be primarily a street car and some track days. Administrators BRAAP Posted September 23, 2007 Administrators Share Posted September 23, 2007 Depending on how you plan to use the car, when you plan to drive it and in what part of the country it will be driven, and with your life experiences driving and riding in cars, using the heater during those times, you should be able to deduce whether or not you will need it. I live in Oregon, similar climate to New York, less snow. For my F-prepared 240-Z race car I elected to remove the heater/blower and I feel that was wise choice for that application. For my daily driven V-8 280-Z, I elected to retain, again I felt that was wise choice for that application. Good luck, Paul
78280z
I guess I was a little vague in asking my question. I was just wondering what people have done who are using their 280z for a street / occasional track car. My apologies for not being specific. Anyway, thank you to those of you who offered your thoughts.
johnc
Keep the heater and blower. I kept them on my unlimited class race car because I raced in the rain. RainX can only do so much.
capt_furious
Just tore my Z apart yesterday trying to figure out why my heater wasn't working. It's starting to get cold / rainy here and there's no way I'm going through another fall and winter with fogged up windows and frostbite-inducing cold. Been there, done that in a '72 Fury, it sucked. Fixed the blower fan, turns out the fuse 'de-soldered' instead of burning out...it looked fine, but wasn't...of course, this is AFTER I traced wires all afternoon and yanked the blower fan to test it with clip leads to confirm that it still worked. DUH. Fixed a bunch of other stuff in the process, at least. Now I've got a working map light. Oooooo. At the very LEAST, you need a defroster. Arguably, unless you're ducting engine bay air over the windshield, a full race car needs some sort of defroster as well, unless you plan on only racing in warm, sunny weather. Can't race with a fogged windshield.
ZDrifter
I have been trying to decide to take mine out later on but I definitly need some type of defroster.... Right now it seems to just blow warm air, not hot, not cold and it wont switch to blow the air to the defroster vents....dont mean to steal the thread but anyone else have this problem??? I removed the AC so maybe something happened there?? Everthing under the dash is still there, just all AC components out of the engine bay.... Also if constant engine bay air was supplied to the windshield through the defroster vents...would that contain the fogging up of windows in the winter?? Datsun350Z
I pulled everything out of my car, but once again it's not going to be driven on anything but clear, sunny days. I have no roof, no window glass or mechanicals, no interior or anything like that so I just tore it all out. If you might possibly drive the car at all at night, in the rain, any time that the windows might possibly fog up it's worth it to keep it just for that one time that you will need it. I'd say that between all of the components it's between 50 - 100 lbs (closer to 100) that you can shave off the car. (This includes heater core, vents, vent pulls, ducting, heater controls, blowers etc.). It is a worthwhile place to look for weight reduction... But, only If you absolutely won't ever need to unfog your windshield.
z bomb
I actually ripped out my heater plenum doing my current resto and am having a hard time picking something to replace it that's much smaller. All I want is a defroster, but I'll take one more opening for feet. Just looked up the Flex-a-lite heater and it's pretty reasonable. Any suggestions, maybe start a new thread and I could try some plenums people suggest as long as it's not too $$$. Remember-small, just defrost, maybe legs. ? Thanks in advance! MJLamberson
if you decide not to use it can I get the fan part (I will buy it) mine was in a million pieces when I pulled the blower
buZy
I live in northern state and bypassed the heater. All you babys in southern states dont even know what real cold is! LOL Just kidding hehe. No a/c either. Just a blower piped to the oem defroster ducts. I swear the V8 headers and duals does supply some cabin warmth as the interior floors are still bare metal. Should add I don't drive the car in rain but have been caught a few times and use rainx on occasion. Keeping a few clean rags in the glove box goes along way. May run the heater core again but for the last 4 years it has not been a major issue. My car is usually on jacks anyways lol. All depends what your use is....
