Next step in turbo technology?

That's definatly not new. Diesels have been using that technology for a few years now. In fact a valve similar but of better flowing design was built right into the turbine housing on some of the diesel turbos. I don't remember the manufacturer for sure, but I want to say KKK, or BW as being the ones to do it.

 

So no, that is not a new advancement or "innovative" as the OP of that thread woul like to believe.

 

The old Mitsu turbos used on the Daytonas in the late '80s and 'early '90s with the VNT (Variable Nozzle Technology) is a more evolved version of something like this used on single scroll turbine housings.

One of our very own Z modifiers out there made a valve just like it (http://www.speedshopthagard.com, site is down though). They saw a 700 rpm quicker spool with it on a T4, if memory serves. It was manual activated.

 

I was actually making a swing valve type setup that should allow better flow into the open inlet when the other is closed but the project I was building it for turned out to be rusted real bad so I stopped making it. I made a test valve out of mild steel, you can see the pictures here:

My idea is to use a two port wastegate actuator and set the valve up so that it is normally closed. From there, vacuum from the engine would open the valve allowing decreased back pressure while cruising then, when the throttle is opened, the valve closes allowing quick spool. From there a simple boost controller could then control the opening of the valve to allow max flow at higher RPM. If you use an electronic boost controller you could then have it only open at a specific boost pressure and it could also be fine tuned by setting it to open at a specific RPM.

 

To extend the life of the actuator you could also use a very light spring in it. Since you don't have to worry about exhaust pressure opening or closing the valve, unlike a wastegate, the spring doesn't have to be all that stiff which should extend the life of it greatly.

Wow... all these guys have never heard of this before? Maybe it's because I spent so much time on TurboFord.net that I learned about this well over a year ago. And this company that "invented" it for the 2JZ guys certainly isn't letting on that they got the idea from somewhere else. :icon13:

 

 

I have heard that it will work best on dual scroll turbo's.

I don't think it does much if anything for non-dual-scroll turbochargers.

As said above, that is the only type of turbo it will work on.

 

What this valve does is essentially turns your regular dual scroll turbo into a variable area turbo. You're cutting the area of the turbine pretty much in half which cuts your A/R measurement in half. This can't be done with a single scroll turbine... at least, not easily. One might be able to cut a single scroll housing half and add a piece of metal in between the halves (removing the proper amount of metal from the halves equaling the thickness of the plate) thus turning your single scroll into a dual scroll. I'm actually thinking about try that out on some spare turbine housings I have. :mrgreen:

Those guys on the supra forums have got to be the most arrogant a**es on the internet. I sure am glad I'm a Z-car guy.

 

some of the most arrogent assholes i have seen on the internet and in real life were mustang, EVO, STI, and 240SX owners, and im sad to say the SRT-4 owners are up there as well...makes me embarrassed to go anywhere with the car i drive

 

on a side note, i think a better way to help spool would be using BW's Extended tip technology, a GT35R compared to a BW S300 series unit...the S300 will spool faster, make more peak power, and will give a much better power range

 

no need for exhaust valves or anything.

VNT on a two-compressor, single turbine shaft turbo. (Dual Compressor wheels for more flow)

 

Or VNT on a two-compressor, two turbine integral turbo. (Series Supercharging, one turbo feeds the other for higher pressures and flows than can be accomplished by one compressor alone!)

 

They are out there....I've seen 'em! Can't say where due to some papers I signed, but it's not hard to figure out...
