HOCKED showroom driver Martin Bullen faced a tricky phone call to his boss after this £250,000 Ferrari went up in smoke.

Martin, 43, was at the wheel as the 599 GTB Fiorano burst into flames at traffic lights.

Firefighters were quickly on the scene and doused the blaze – but the car was wrecked.

And shaken Martin was left to break the news to Paul Jaconelli, owner of supercar garage Romans International in Banstead, Surrey.

Paul, who had asked Martin to drive the motor to repairers, said yesterday:

“He rang me and said, ‘Your car’s just gone up in flames’.

“At first I hoped he was joking, but I soon realised he was serious.

“I asked him why it had happened and he said he had no idea.

“Martin’s worked here since he was 15 and he’s a great guy. It’s obviously not his fault – so I’m not going to hold it against him.â€

The amazing blaze was caught on camera by a stunned passer-by.

Paul, 58, added: “Martin said the car made a noise at the lights, then just went up in smoke. It should be covered under warranty – but it wasn’t great news.â€

This is also a common occurance on newer Porsches... Not sure if the Ferrari use Pentosin in their powersteering and clutch hydraulics but they do in the Porsches and that stuff is very flamable. Been a number of reports of 996TTs catching on fire at stoplights not long after doing clutch work.

Funny thing is...I work on those.. hehe. But thats not good. Can you smell that 611hp v-12 burning?? Hopefully it didnt get into the interior. Seats are around $25K each. Its a later 599 too, he has the carbon ceramic brakes on it.

Any idea what the cause might have been? Any factory service bulletins lately dealing with sudden and catastrophic fires?

Havent heard of any bulletins as of now. A lot of fires on mid-engined Ferrari's are due to something getting on the cats considering they are very close to the motor and get very hot. As far as the 599 goes that shouldnt be as common of a problem but these things happen usually from error on the technicians part. I am very anal about leaving fluids anywhere on the engine, I use a lot of brake clean and dry all areas. The exhausts on these cars get extremely hot. These cars go through a lot of testing and everything on these cars are designed for a reason. Some people start changing things and this can happen, Im not saying that this is the case on this car but I have heard of it before.
