Boobala
I just spent half the day crawling around junk yards in search of the elusive R200 LSD. Now I know why these things are considered "Golden." I guy I work with told me there was Z31 turbo in our local "U-Pull-It." I guess that's the last time I take the word of a GTO guy. There were three Z31's, but not one turbo. There was one 280ZX NA and two 280Z's, one of which appeared to be in good shape. Real pity to see it in a junk yard, it had potential. So I snagged its hatch stays and front turn signals. And for this act of desecration of this Z, I was punished by a Yellow Jacket who had made a home in the left hand head-light bucket. Ouch! To make sure I got this right, would somebody please confirm the Z’s that had R200 LSD’s. So far, I think it’s… 280ZX Turbo 280ZX 2+2 300ZX Turbo (Z31) . . . am I wrong? And, 280Z’s had open R200’s? Mike C
I found one but had it sold out from under me. Just to add, the 88 all white cars were viscous equipped and you would have to have custom CV shafts. Not all 87 cars were equipped as it was a running change sometime in the model year. yes, it is hard to find. I've been looking for nearly 3 years. I know I could have one ASAP, but I'm not paying $750+ for a used up diff. I'm on the waiting list for a new one from Reider Racing for about $525. Have you considered a MSA's LSD, or a Quaife unit? Me? I'm going to hold out for an original R200 LSD for a while. I got lots of other things to do to my car right now. If it comes down to it, I pull a JY R200 and get MSA's LSD or a Quaife.
Guest Anonymous
yeah you can get a 2way KAAZ LSD for about 500$ give or take some pocket change, qualife unit looks like a dream. but 1100$ is steap! NISMO LSD is about 900$
SleeperZ
No 280ZX came with LSD. The Z31s with LSD are turbos, '87 - '89. There is some talk I've heard that perhaps a 240SX had an R200 LSD, but who knows....
Boobala
Thanks! I just read through a bunch of the R200/LSD post in this forum and I think I have it figure it out. 87-89 300ZX Turbo. (Automatic or Manual) Time to get on the phone and search the easy way. (Yellow Jacket Free)
Guest Anonymous
Hey Boobala, If you find two, I've been looking for some time, it seems they are all over the east coast but not over here. Perhaps you could email me. Good luck with the search! -980mak
Phantom
Contact Jerry at "All Z Car specialists" in Fort Worth, Texas. (817) 483-0383. I got one from him about a month ago for $400. He told me that they are rare - may be simpler in the long run to get an R230 out of a Z32 and do the CV joint upgrade while you're at it. Mike C
Call Reider and ask, it is available, but they have had trouble getting shipments from the manufacturer. Maybe getting more people on the list would speed things up or make them realize there IS a significant market and they might find some other manufacturers. I received a copy of their printed catalog last week, and it is in there, but like you said not on the web page. It says only for 12mm ring gear bolts, but I'll either get a later model diff or have some sleeves machined.

Thnaks, for the info about "All Z Car specialists" I'll keep it on file. Actually, a CV shaft update has always been in my plans. I am a little confused as to what's involved though. I've search these forums and can find no definitve procedures. Imagine I get a R200 from a 87-89 300ZXT. What do I need to do to install it and CV Shafts in my '73 240Z? Imagine I get a R200 from a 280Z and Install a LSD From MSA. What do I need to do to install it and CV Shafts in my '73 240Z? Imagine I get a R230 from a 300ZXTT. (or Q45) What do I need to do to install it and CV Shafts in my '73 240Z? Boy, if somebody could answers those questions or point me at website where detailed procedures are outlined, I would be one happy Z-boy. jeromio
Tim240Z has some doc on the R230 swap. Some of his info is compiled into the Drivetrain section here: http://240z.jeromio.com/faq/
CU Zcar
Reider does show an R200 (12mm bolts) under Differentials>PG Power Brute on their website, but no price (no prices for anything else either). $525 you say, that may be worth it for me if I don't find a junkyard with one soon. Course I'd have to still buy a late-model R200 then...more $$$...oh well that's what cars are all about.
Boobala
Thanks for FAQ link Jeromio. Some interesting info to found there. Would have liked to seen more pictures of a R230 installation though. In fact, If I decide to go with an R200 + after-market LSD, I now know to look for one of these... 280ZX Manual from 6/78 to 6/79 - R200 300ZX Non-Turbo - R200 Does anybody know the ratios of the various R230's Z32 Manual? Z32 Automatic? Q45 Man / Auto?

For either R200 (except the viscous one out of the White SS 300ZXT) the methods are the same. Bolt in the Diff, remove (pop out) any side axles from the diff. IF you use the 240Z stub axles the car has and use a modified 280ZX T companion flange set, modded R200 pinion flange seal for the companion flanges, and bolt in 280ZXT CV shafts. Here's a page I wrote on that conversion: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pparaska/240ZCVHalfshaftConversion.htm If you swap over to 280Z stub axles, then you use the 280Z companion flanges, a CV shaft adapter like Ross Corrigan sells or the one with drawings on my site (below), and just bolt it all in. I prefer Ross's adapters. Here's a link to a page I wrote on that swap: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pparaska/280ZCVHalfshaftConversion.htm Hope that helps
opie
I had a stock 89 ZXT LSD and found that a lug was present on the bottom of the diff. I had to grind it off to get it to settle into the mount. Easy with the GTO slander . I just bought a 68 conv and a 69 hardtop...both have posi.

Cody 82 ZXT
I just asked Jerry at All Z's the other day if he had any and he just laughed at me. I was buying an engine from him and was going to see if I could get some kind of deal as a package but, there were none to be had. Maybe next time. Boobala
Thanks pparaska, I think I understand now. R200LSD + 280Z stub axles + RossC's CV shaft adapters + 280ZXT (or 2+2) half shafts = drive train that can handle 300hp - 350Hp? Thanks denny411! Wow, 12 of them. Who'd a thunk it! I have searched www.car-part.com for other parts before. But I hadn't yet searched for a LSD. When I'm ready (got the money) I'm sure I'll go that direction. denny411
The key to searching car-part.com is knowing the right terminology. for the rear differential you have to look under carrier.
