DRZ man
Yeah they look funny and all but, I they will be last ones to be found when in combat, think about it.
ShaggyZ
They look like wookies that haven't heard of styling gel.

ShaggyZ
I never follow the link but now I just saw there already is a reference to wookies and Star Wars! While the idea of snipers carrying AK-47s is funny, I can imagine the practical reason being that they don't want to go marching around on a demonstration with precision instruments. bschiltz
That's what parade rifles are for?

Doubtful that they've gotten anything near what the US has. Probably still running SVD/NDM rifles. Maybe only PSLs.
JMortensen
Don't American snipers mostly carry Remington 700s? Not exactly the highest tech rifle, but sniping is about being able to hit the target, and a 700 can do that just fine...

I'm willing to bet that the barrels that the US uses are WAY better quality than anything the Iranians are getting their hands on. Same with powder and bullet quality (and of course optics). Have you ever seen Iron Man or Lord of War? Those are both fiction but we do do know there's a good chance they can get their hands on the same stuff we do. johnc
I was thinking Cousin It from the Adams Family. They just need a little beret and some sunglasses.
auxilary
i have a saiga 7.62x39. it has a 16.5" barrel. It is an AK47 without the pistol grip. I can group 6-8" with iron sights at 50 yards. I consider that pretty good for an AK. If you can hit a paper plate at 100 yards, that's excellent accuracy. 7.62x39 is a poor long range round as well. Now, if we're talking Dragunov with 7.62x54r, now that is a competent rifle. My SKS is far more accurate than the saiga
kiwi303
The Iranian Army has Steyr sniper rifles... the US State department was so incensed at that they made life hell for the Steyr USA branch of Steyr-Mannlicher.

Eh, they're welcome to the Steyrs, I could never like them. They just felt....wrong to me. Give me a FN PBR any day.
Tombarace14
Speaking of Rem 700's I finally got mine!! .308 26" Heavy barrel all matte black, and best of all LEFT HANDED! They really do look like Cousin It don't they John? But think of it this way if you in really tall grass it will look like a bunch of floating AK's coming for ya. PanzerAce
Heh, lefties. I've actually been reading up on the 223AI round, and damn I want one now. Better ballistics than a .308, AND it uses .223 primers/bullets, AND you can fireform your own cases by just running a .223 Rem round through your gun. Carl Beck
Interesting side note perhaps - I received my Marksmanship Training from SMSgt. Sharp, U.S.A.F., circa 1968. He was an Olympic Mentalist Marksman and the person that General LeMay had as a consultant and advisor, when LeMay made the first military purchase of the M-16's for S.P.'s (Security Police) in SAC. Our rifle range was at the U.S.A.F. Air Crew Survival School in the mountains of Western Washington State. What a beautiful place it was - - No problem hitting a paper plate at 100 meters with a slightly reworked M16 when SMSgt. Sharp was holding it. Today I keep my AR-15 SP1 {.223} nearby... now if I can only find enough ammunition at affordable prices. FWIW, Carl B.
HS30-H
He was an Olympic Mentalist Marksman.......... There ought to be a medal for that.

Not exactly the highest tech rifle, but sniping is about being able to hit the target, and a 700 can do that just fine... That is correct. Out of the box for production, one of the most accurate rifles in the us, not including foreign production. The rifles like the 40x series are even better. I have a cousin in the marines as a sniper and that is what he shoots, Remington 40x. He was an Olympic Mentalist Marksman. Carl B. Yup Carl, undoubtedly he would have been the Olympic champion Mentalist! Does that mean that his thoughts were spot on or just in a tight group? Sorry, couldn't resist. menzzer37
Yeah, it's like the guys said, it's not just a box stock 700, it's about the different grade of barrel, being floated, a jeweled trigger, and a match grade firing pin spring/sear. I shot on the national rifle team for a couple years. I have a couple SKS (vietnam AR) and an M4 and an LAR Grizzly AR15. The Bushmaster m4 is right out of the box but the grizzly has a match grade fluted stainless barrel and custom upper. I shot a coyote at 375 yards last week no problem. I wouldn't try that shot with my m4.
