240zRacer
not the best choice on motors but actually a smart idea since the original motor was junk to and always breaking down, a toyota mr2 turbo swap might have been a better option or a v8 conversion. CamH
Didn't those cars perform like trash anyways? Seems like the Fiero swap could be a good option if all you want is a reliable Ferrari. I'd just dress it up some. I'm pretty sure the yearly maintenance on a 308 is nearly the value of the car if you are going to do everything "by the books." johnc
Didn't those cars perform like trash anyways? In the context of today's cars, yes. In the context of 1970's era crapwagons, the Ferrari's were head and shoulders above most everything except Porsche, Lambo, and Maserati. There are also two very special versions of the basic GTB chassis: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari_288_GTO http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari_F40
zgeezer
http://jalopnik.com/...verse-fauxrarri SBC into Jaguars make sense: good looking car with engines that are expensive to repair and electronics that are less than reliable. Here's my choice: GM/Ford 6 Speed transaxle (Pontiac G-6) mated to a 5.3 L GenIII aluminum 300 +hp engine: think new front driver Impala SS. There are kits available to mount these in a Fiero.... why not the Ferrarri. What is the mantra for Hybridz?.... Oh, yes; "Parts is parts". g Edited May 21, 2010 by zgeezer
sorealsosurreal
Would just like to add. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Datsun-Z-Series-240z-1972-240z-4by4-lifted-/250636044386?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3a5b128862 I know "to each his own", but WHY!!! m4xwellmurd3r
how is this a bad idea? You want a Ferrari, but don't want to deal with the bs of the high dollar engine crapping on you. So, you buy a Ferrari, minus its engine, and add in a reliable, powerful, engine of your choice. So what you get is, a tire burning Ferrari that you don't have to worry about taking out a second mortgage if the engine decides to break down again. The wonderful thing about Ferrari's are their engines. Yes, they are temperamental and break down more then a Camry but the sound and feel is far beyond most anything else. Putting a POS Chevy 60 degree V6 (Citation, S10 engine) in the car is like cutting off Sophia Loren's head and replacing it with Rodney Dangerfield's. letitsnow
I understand the concept, but why that engine, the 2.8 is probably my least favorite engine ever. Mine is gutless in a 3200lb car AND it barely gets 20mpg(more like 16) on my 75% highway commute, nothing that is that slow should get that bad of economy. FlatBlack
Neither of those vehicles have L28's... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_Fiero 1985 saw the introduction of the GT model, which looked just like the 1984 Indy model without the decals or body color wheels. The problem with insufficient power was addressed, much to the satisfaction of the general public. A Chevrolet 2.8 L V6 engine rated at 140 hp (104 kW) 160 ft.lbs. was put into the car, satisfying most critics of the base engine. The High Output V6 was paired with a modified Muncie 4-speed transmission. I'm guessing the 90 Firebird in his sig has a 2.8L V6... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pontiac_Firebird Edited May 25, 2010 by flatblack280
