jim's 73 240z dual purpose car
JIM73240Z replied to JIM73240Z's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
well the cage WAS supoosed to go in the car but after we got all of the tubes cut, we realized that we had the wrong die for the bender. all that meant was that i had more time to tidy things up on the car. i was finishing up some welding in the engine bay and put up the cross member when i found out that the existing frame rails are not centered in the car. the passenger was 1/4" towards the center. so after lots of lasers and strings across the car i have the frame rails cnetered in the car and the cross member centered in the car, except it does not look like it by appearance. trust me, it is. pita. then got the shell primered with the super cheap and crappy hf hvlp spray gun. i really do not care about the way it turned out because it is just for protection while im waiting on other stuff (cage, dzus, hood pins, ect.) here is the drivers side rear suspension mocked up under the car. those are the road race struts and big brake kit form arizona z car. http://www.arizonazcar.com/ 280zone made a hood for me. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=101130 need to get the doors back on (which are now gutted). just need to throw some primer on there and reinstall back on the car so i can put the fenders on so i can put the hood on, in the correct location. i am scheduled to go back and do the cage work in a week or two. once that is done, i can get to some serious body work. jimbo -

there are more than one way to catch a speeder. radar is one. timing is another. on that road that they did that on (that i drive almost daily) there is timing marks on the shoulder for the helicopters. pacing is another. radio is by far faster than any car. on break, the guy said that it was on a closed road. wrong. he started on the hawes rd exit that is closed but not the 202. retard. hope he rooms with bubba. jimbo -

a 4" pipe is 12.56 sq. in in area. a 2.5" pipe is 4.90 sq in for one or 9.8 sq. in for 2. a 2.75" pipe is 5.93 sq. in for one and 11.88 sq. in for 2. 3" pipe is 7.06 sq in for 1 or 14.13 sq. in for 2. it seems to keep roughly the same area, you would need 2- 3" pipes out the back to be equal to or greater than the single 4" in the tranny tunnel. im also assuming that exhaust gasses are are at the same pressure and velocity as at the 4" pipe, but it will have cooled down, reducing its volume and velocity. so maybe going 2.75" pipes would work. or im talking out my ass. jimbo

because your car now weighs more than a sherman tank and there is no room left for any more metal, i would leave them out. you just have no more room to weld anything to. he he. paint it. jimbo -

i would add the gussets, but john is right. there is no way to predict the damage of a single impact and design around that. if you do, you affect something else in the design. i think the gussets are a good add but not ness. jimbo -
:lmao: good one jimbo

i was living in santa fe new mexico and a friend of mine was playing in a band in los alamos, the birth place of the atomic bomb. sitting there drinking my beer and ease dropping on some guy trying to pick up some chick by using a line like that. shot down in flames but it was funny as hell watching the nerd pick up on some hipie. bottom line, get a degree. all it means is that you can be taught. most fighter pilots that i know do not have a degree in anything that resemble flying. jimbo

JIM73240Z replied to JMortensen's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
i was takling to jon about an "S" shaped plate to go over the rocker, down the rocker and over the top of the floor pan to help with this. obviously jon can not do this now, so the box is the best fix for that. for those that have not put it in yet, i think the "S" plate will cover all of the issues. jimbo -

umm no. i meant across the roof. from the drivers sun viser to above and behind the passenger seat. that is what i was thinking. looking at some of the stuff that they are talking about, are we sure they are not a evil kinevil(sp) dare devil group that drops themselves off of large buildings with them inside. i mean i look at johnc's cages and yours and think $hit that can take some damage. but theirs is the next set or 2 down that road. i think johnc is smarter than the average bear but what kind of responce would he get from over there with his cages? jimbo -
my boss came from california as a PE in civil. his test was 2 days for the main test and a seperate day for his disipline. he did have to retake a portion of the test over again (most do it seems). i am a little different though. i was in school and dropped out of college because i got to bored with the classroom stuff that did not relate to the "real world". had several "talks" with the profs about it and they had no clue how it was out of the class setting, so i got pissed off and did not go back. it took about a year of studying on my own and finally passed the eit. i now have doubts as to getting the pe as i am not sure if i want to do this for the rest of my life. ah ha. it sounded like that is what they were yelling at you to do but was unsure if i was right or not. dam. i still would like to take someone with me a few times. i bought 2 seats for it, i am going to put 2 seats in it. i thought that they were trying to get you to install a diagonal in the halo bar as well to make a pair of rigid triangles in the roof section. from the front drivers a pillar / halo intersection to the back passengers b pillar / halo intersection. that would definetly keep any one from riding with you unless they were a midget(little people?). keep it coming. jimbo -
im a structral engineer. from civil, you can easily go to evnironmental, structural, industrial, civil, hydro, geo. it is the basis for many fields. its a good start to many doors. jimbo

atl and fuel safe can get you an angled filler neck to run it over to the fuel door. mine is going to run out the back behind the licence plate, o'l skool style. that way i do not have to raise the hatch to gas up. there is lots o thread that deal with this. jimbo

its just a empty fg shell. will save you from a shopping cart but nothing else i guess. i have them in the garage ready for install. jimbo

our gas prices went up anytime a cloud went by a off shore well. the big price gouging happened when a construction worker hit the only gas line to feed the phx area. no gas came in by pipe, only truck. gas went way high. we now have law also against price gouging but the law makers saw it as supply and demand and not price gouging. i bet cosco would jack the prices up a bit. just my $.02. jimbo
