hood vents: ideas...
JIM73240Z replied to OlderThanMe's topic in Windtunnel Test Results and Analysis
im thinking that the air will blow through the scoop and help draw out more engine air. its my theory anyway. all of my ideas so far have been verfied by the wind tuneel tes, so im "hoping" im right on this as well. if not, it looks mean as hell i think. jimbo -
hood vents: ideas...
JIM73240Z replied to OlderThanMe's topic in Windtunnel Test Results and Analysis
i did it. took the dremel to the hood. i made the area of the vents a little larger than what i had taped out before. i have yet to hit the fenders with the vents. not sure weither to cut out a rectangle of the fenders, add the vents, then put them back in. or try patching a new piece of metal in with the vents. i am thinking to use the old metal because the fenders are contoured and im afraid it will not match back up if i do not. jimbo -

JIM73240Z replied to JIM73240Z's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
well, its been a few weeks and i haven't done crap to it. last weekend i did cut the hood vents though. here are the pics. i ended up extending the vent area down a few more inches than what i had tapped out before. the top of the vents are in the same location but the bottom is extended down. marked them with a templet i made on acad and a sharpie and went nuts with the dremel tool. need to sand them down and get rid of some crap, but it is done. the car is finally at the shop for the cage install. i also took apart the motor that came in the car. looked pretty good except for the water passages. i will have to make sure those get really clean. thats all for now. jimbo -
some of that stuff looks like pics that my brother had driving around in sudan when he was at the us embassy. i saw a pic that he had of some guy with a gallon jug of gas strapped to the hood with a rubber hose out of it and ran straight down to the carb. sometimes it is whatever gets you from point a to point b, but damn. jimbo

i cant quite tell but it "looks" like the hot turbo exhaust is aimed right at the drivers front tire. nice. jimbo

when is was racing bikes, i rode to and from work every day as part of working out the kinks from hard training days or races. definetly watch for cars as i have had to make sudden turns with the car to avoid being on the car. maintanience s not to bad on bikes. what does wear out is usually pretty cheap. when is was living in albequrque, i rode with the nerds from sandia nat. labs on their lunch break. that was a hammer fest. watch for cars not in front but all around you. and always WEAR a helmet. i have a large collection of helmets through the years that are trashed. many cuncusions and now have cataracts in my eyes from head trama. great exercise and easy on the joints, unlike running. jimbo

there is a few around. ecology auto parts down in the hood (south of downtown phx) and a decent one by the airport off of 44th (i think). it is a nissan / toyota only. half of the yard is nissan. they want top dollar for their stuff. i needed stub axles but they only sell the struts complete for 350.00. i went elsewhere. they are the one i frequent the most. jimbo

Has anyone used or seen this airdam used?
JIM73240Z replied to BurnoutZ's topic in Body Kits & Paint
let me see if i can get a pic of it on a car. i think it is that air dam anyway. dave at azcar has baught himself a new 280z that he is putting all of his stuff on for a show car to show off all of his stuff on one car. i "think" that he had one of his dams left over in his garage and has put it on his car. it maybe however that it is a type 3 and just modified to fit his car and style. it is over at spankys auto body and the work is being done by coyotegay's brother that did the body work behing the cobraz. i will stop by and get a pic. jimbo -
im pretty sure all of the azcar molds went to the zfiberglass guy. i remember dave saying that one guy bought them all. jimbo

nice. i think the unsprung weight might be a little closer if you weigh the swing arms ect. by fixing the hinge area and weighing them. some objects may be heavier at one end than the other making the unsprung weight more or less depending on where the majority of the weight is at. just my .02. good going though. jimbo

jim's 73 240z dual purpose car
JIM73240Z replied to JIM73240Z's topic in S30 Series - 240z, 260z, 280z
well, a couple of weeks have gone by and work has been done. ready for the passenger seat to go in. here is the frames for the seat rails. i sit pretty low in the car so lots of head room for the helmet and cage. fender flairs are on and bolted to car. looks pretty mean. got all of the side markers shaved as well as the fuel door and the vent at the rear hatch area. the door locks are gone and the side mirror. i decided to leave the door handles on incase of an incident and i am unable to open from the inside that a course worker can open from the out side. good thinkin. the hood now opens on the hinges. thanks 280zone for the pics of the hinge so i had a idea of where to mount. those tabs are solid fg so you can put several holes in without to much loss. finally got the wing mounted to the fg hatch. once i got the bases mounted to the hatch, i started to adjust the wing to level. well, with the apr wings, the adjustments is not enough for the slope of the hatch. it will still point the wing up. so i made a new non-adjustable strut to put the wing in position. i took a 3/16" rod and welded it to 1/2" tubing that is cut to fit inside the wing struts. the pipe i just large enough for the apr supplied bolt to go through and there you have it. the apr adjuster bolts are aluminum. i was a little worried about the added weight going to steel, but that aluminum coupler nut weighs quite a bit so it is about equal. all in all a fairly productive couple of weeks. the ride height is set, (for now) untill the drivetrain goes in, then i will lift it back up to where it is now. i was hopeing that the msa type III air dam would be closer to the ground for a splitter. i will have to work on that. i have a few more things that i can do before it goes to get the cage in. waiting on $$$$ for a hitch to go on the armada to tow it over. i need to order the dzuz fastners to install the pdk fg dash. i better get on it. jimbo -
customer support would be a huge plus. there are several people that make said products and no customer service or support. they are not well liked around here. then there are others like beta and 280zone with customer service and support. good prices, good product, good relations are key. i, like others, will pay a little more for someone to call me back, make a product that fits (relatively well on out old cars), and looks good. we could always use more good fg parts for our cars. good luck jimbo

Azc Wilwood Rotor Damage
JIM73240Z replied to nope's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
my brake kit fell together. the rear kit comes with a couple of sets of washers and had to use one between the calipers and the struts to keep the rotor centered in the calipers. no problems. i do have his lca's. jimbo -
Need options on 17x10.5 and 17x9 wheels.
JIM73240Z replied to 1 fast z's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
yep. only black like andys (2fiddy). i have the zg flares. i wish i had gone 11" in the rear to fill them out more. i guess i will have to get a race set of wheels:-). i was going to get ccw's but andy talked me into those. cheap. not to heavy. jimbo -

JIM73240Z replied to 1 fast z's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
if you are using the az car struts and brakes, i can give you my rim specs. i have 17x9 in the front +15 offset and in the rear i have 17x10's with a +35 offset. on the rear i did have to put a 1/4" spacer but other than that they fit good. they are the same rims as cliftons. got them from vivid racing in mesa, had to order but they could get them. cost was 220 a piece. jimbo -
hood vents: ideas...
JIM73240Z replied to OlderThanMe's topic in Windtunnel Test Results and Analysis
the enging is going to be the l6 with a bw s400 turbo. lots of plumbing in there. the vents in the hood i was just going to remove the material and cover the bottom with a screen mesh to keep the crap out. i had thought about angling them up as well. not sure which is better. jimbo -
i think that would be a bad thing if you had to reach for the kill switch in the case of an "incident". jimbo

hood vents: ideas...
JIM73240Z replied to OlderThanMe's topic in Windtunnel Test Results and Analysis
even if you could mount the radiator at an angle (plus there is a fmic to deal with) i do not think there is enough room to have a vent like 74 5.0l. if some has made that happen i would love to see it. i think the only pic i have seen with a slanted rad is redbirds and if i remember right, there wasn't enough room. heres the post http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=114152&highlight=redbird i can add more vent towards the front though. thats easy. jimbo
