  1. The silver trim? What I did to get mine off and keep from ruining it, was start at the back corner and with a small screwdriver (very small) very very carefully leverage out that corner. It kinda comes up and out a tad. Once that lets go and you have enough to grab with your fingers, just very carefully pull it off. MIne came off on both sides with no fuss or problem. Once I got it started it was cake.
  2. Does the new starter work once then fail after a drive, the same as the old one? When I first got my Fairlady I had a switch go out in the ignition that caused the starter to stay engaged.. It didnt keep trying to start the motor, but the gear stayed out.. So after a short drive, the starter was worthless. All it would do is click or turn extremely slowly. On my starter, if I remember correctly, there was a black wire with a spade connector attached to it. When I started the engine removing this wire forced the starter to disengage. I did that for two weeks until I located the actual problem, lol. I dont remember the name of the switch/selenoid or a part number though.. It was about 7 years ago and my memory barely works past 7 hours. Hope this helps.
  3. a8ksh4 I'd love to see some pics. Looking at doing something similar in the next few months.
  4. Addiction is a dangerous thing. So too is using it to rationalize theivery and betrayal. Addiction drives poeple to do things they wouldnt ordinarily, but it really has alot to do wth the person in the first place. Addiction is one of the most selfish and hateful things a person can inflict on friends and family. The damage done so that person can have something they "want" is staggering. In the end, I dont have any sympathy for poeple like that. You have have stolen because of the addiction, but it was still a CHOICE you made.. and if you choose to neglect your children, to steal from family and let those around you suffer in order to feed your greed for whatever substance your addicted to you are low, selfish and a fool. Its great you were willing to try and help him. Its awful what he did to you. Id bury him so deep in a jail daylight would be relegated to nothing more than a fond memory. I wouldnt find him and kick his *** either. Find him maybe - then haul him in yourself - but dont hurt him. The last thing you want is getting yourself in legal trouble over him.. and it occurs to me someone willing to steal as much as he stole from you wouldnt hesitate in pressing charges out of spite or in hopes he could keep you from seeing him jailed.
  5. Ahh nice. So the STi beat the EVO more or less stock for stock.
  6. We have some poeple down the street that raise weener dogs.. They walk them in a wagon with a little "tent" think on the back and pillows and **** so the dogs dont actually have to walk.. They just get pulled around in their little carriage.
  7. JohnC, I'm unfamiliar with SCCA regulations and the like.. In the results you posted how modifed were the vehicles? I havent driven either car but Ive ridden in both and I like the STi. To me it feels like a more "complete" car if that makes alot of sense. Edit, I found this on the SCCA website, I gather this means stock powerplants more or less, the basic safety requirements and light suspension mods?
  8. Ultimate Bondo! Basicly the best filler the Advanced by my house had on tap. Its MILES better than the normal pink bondo crap but (though I havent ever worked with it) I'd say a few yards short of the "real" stuff. edit, BY the way, The site is now updated. I thought I had it done last night but I wasnt paying attention and I uploaded to the wrong friggen folder, lol
  9. I think its interesting. Anything can do a wheelie? Well, not really, but more to the point and spirit of the statement, sure alot of cars can, but not so many have been doing it for 40-ish years and do it for 1/4mil straight, and run 11.0's, heh. Even if its not your thing (its not mine) that car and others of its ilk are impressive. *Alot* of work went into them and I dont see how that can be ignored simply because you dont like wheelstanding or whatever its called. Honestly its just another version of what alot of us do. (note: alot, not all) and thats modify a vehicle to do something pointless. Alot of us here have heavily modified cars/trucks for no purpose other than to drive and have fun with. How many of us here make our living drag racing? or road racing? When we hobbyists and enthusiasts build a vehicle its for enjoyment and rarely for any "purpose". I see alot of specialty stuff like wheelstanders the same way. They did it cause they wanted, and because they could.. and really, I respect anything thats well thought out and well executed, even if its not so much something I'm interested in.
  10. Some before, during and after pics of the repair I had to do to the hatch landing on my Z. One corner was rusted through and had to be replaced. First time ever really doing this sort of repair. I put a more detailed write-up on my website, but wanted to post here and see what poeple think. I made the replacement peice out of 16g sheet I had laying around. The bends were a pain in the ***.. I dont even have a bench vise.. I had to kinda improvise a bending setup using bricks, anger and a torch, heh. Welding the Z metal with Flux Core is a really great way to make yourself angry by the way. All in all, I'm pretty happy with out it came out. When I shoot the primer in a month or so the repair will hopefully be invisible. I apologize ahead of time for the poor pics.. I'm no good and my camera isnt good enough to make up for my lack of ability. Some of the pics of the blending and filler work make it look wavy.. when in reality its pretty durn straight. I spent 4 1/2 hours on the filler =/ Pics of the cancer - Cut out - New peices tacked in - Blending - Ready for primer -
  11. New Tires! - New to you anyway Great on gas. - Doesnt run long enough to use any in the first place Body almost perfect. - Except the fiat that t-boned it sticking out of the driver-side door. Comes with parts car! - See "Body almost perfect" Mechanically sound. - Engine knocking, but only a little. No rust. - 'Cause the car is now made of bondo. One owner. - One owner we can locate. Recently alligned - Was pulling to the right, so I ran into an ice cream truck on the left side. Only slight vibration.
  12. Any idea as to the power the Bitter's engine makes? Never seen one before but its a slick looker. I agree with selling it thought. No telling what it would cost to repair it if something goes wrong down the road.
  13. It does I beleive. I seem to recall reading some threads on adapting different torchs for use as well. I'm just a hobbyist really, and wouldnt be welding all that much, but damn I'd love to have that big boy, hehe.
  14. For the money I dont know that you can do much better than the TA185. the Syncrowave is a nice machine but a used one is right at or more than a new TA. I've heard some pretty amazing things about these suckers.
  15. http://www.weldingsuppliesfromioc.com/servlet/Detail?no=1633 *sigh*
  16. That gets old alot faster than you'd think.
  17. I agree in large part. Ive fallen into that trap a couple times before with the vehicles I've owned and I've learned a lesson or two. When i got my Z back, I made sure I had a DD to get me around so I didnt get stuck in that deadly "I have to do this quick cause this car is all I have" trap. I sat down and gave the project weeks of though as to how to proceed and what to do, when, why and how. As well as really trying to assess the proper order of things. ie, not building my engine before I tore the body down to deal with the rust.. Install and engine then pull it all back out and strip the car seemed foolish. I have alot of things still "up in the air" but these are parts of the project I havent gotten to yet. I've decided exactly what I'm doing to the body, what color its gonna be and how I want it to look. So, I'm concentrating on that, all the while educating myself as to EFI systems, suspension setups/tuning, turbo theory/design/implimentation and anything else I need to learn. I wont let impatience get the better of me this time around, nor will I let myself waste my extremely limited funds on crap I dont need or will replace later. That said, I understand the "bit by bit" mentality. I've lived in its shadow my whole life. Alot of poeple (myself included) simply dont have the money to lay 10k down on an engine swap all at once. Its little by little, or nothing at all. In that instance, I'd rather buy and swap the engine, drive it around for 4-5 months, then get the money for the cam, or heads, or whatever, and do it peice by peice. You have to repeat yourself which may not be the most efficient way to do it, but if its the *only* way to do it - Have fun. I think though alot of poeple arent in that spot and let impatience get the better of them - they want to proceed too quickly. The individual really needs to make an honest assesment of their capabilitys, financially, skill-wise, time-wise, etc and decide how to proceed from that assesment. Poeple *really* should come up with a definate plan though. Even if your gonna bit by bit the project, knowing *exactly* what you need and when your gonna need it is important. One thing I think Grumpy was alluding to was buying something just 'cause. Not because it fits into your project or because its needed but because it was there to be bought. Like, say a set of heads or the like that arent what you have in mind for your finished project (say, gt40p's when your project calls for AFR165's) because you saw a decent deal. Ive seen alot of similar stuff from a good friend of mine.. He has a '67 Mustang and hes nickle and diming himself to death on it. Doing little stuff when he has to go back and re-do alot of it later.. Or buying things that dont fit the project or buying the wrong things first ( he got a new 302 longblock and didnt fix the front suspension which is so damn squirrely its dangerous to drive it over 60mph, heh).
  18. Sorry to hijack.. When ya get it, take some pics and let us know how you like it. Been thinking of picking one up myself before long. *cough* rollcage *cough*
  19. Yeah, do some searching, lots on this topic. A quick break-down for ya. Carb Cleaner works. Its how I did it. Just spray, give it a minute to soak in, scrape with a scraper, spray again, scrape again, spray again, scrape again, repeat until your angry. When I was done I hit the area with a wire wheel. If your concerned with maintaining the paint underneath use a soft plastic scraper and do more spraying and wiping than scraping. Other methods folks have used - Mr. Muscle oven cleaner. (Any oven cleaner thats not heat activated should work, but Mr. Muscle seems to be favored) Heat Gun. Air Chisel. Anger.
  20. I learned to drive a stick in a CRX with no back end or exhuast.. The clutch once depressed wouldnt pop back out either - you had to hook it with your toe and pull it back. Wanna talk about trial by fire.. my god.
  21. You can do a search on brakes to get some really good info, but my understanding of the matter is that the stock system, working in top order with premium shoes and pads is sufficient for most street driven applications.
  22. S2k + Turbo = Better torque curve. Dont they have like 230hp and 11trq stock or something? hehe. I got to drive one about two years ago. Belonged to a friend's boss and we were gonna wash and wax it for him. I have to say, they drive great, but man it takes a second or two to get em moving. Once you break 4k they'll pull but below that, I'm betting a kid on a big-wheel could keep up.. lol. Sounds like a great swap. I'm gonna dredge up some pics of the motors and try to visualize it. I never did look at the motor in the one I drove.
  23. photobucket.com is where I upload pics to. Its a free service and pretty nice. Awsome work.
  24. Looks good man, definatly keep the thread updated. I love reading build progress stuff. Motivates me to keep working, lol.
