  1. I like to wire brush all welds then spray a little bit of wd-40 if im going to leave it exposed. When you're ready to work on it again just wipe it down with some acetone.
  2. I'm running +4 degrees with 255/40/17 and I had to cut at least 2 inches from the bottom of the air dam. I had to remove my front corner marker so that the fender flare could move up. Just suck it up and cut cut cut if you want track alignment specs!
  3. What a terrible design on that arm that broke. Have you contacted them about it?
  4. I made mine at home. Has seen plenty of action and still working well. Here's the thread :My link
  5. Dave, Your daring for jumping straight into TIG welding! Even in most CC welding courses reading material basically covers saftey and proper use of tools. The actual learning comes by practice, just like anything else. I know your pressed on time these days but I would highly recommend a few courses at GCC. unfourtunately, your going to have to take two other welding courses before you start tig welding. One will cover oxy-accettelene, and another for mig and arc. You might have some luck talking to the instructor about skipping the first course. let me know when your ready to get started at home. If you temp me with beer I'll be more than happy to give you a few pointers.
  6. Long story short... Dave (Thehelix112), a couple of my local buddies, and I are entered for the soapbox race in LA on May 21st. Red Bull WANTS us in the race. However, there is a another team with similar "hot dog" theme and they are trying to get us to change. Lots of politics involved so please help us out by letting them know we are the team to be seen out there. Our Blog page has team info here My link and comment page here My link Please help support us. Especially if your from the LA area! Thanks Team LADD
  7. This is a super long debate over static toe in/out settings. We can argue over what works best theoretically but, I say play with it for your self and see what works best for your car and on different tracks. Cameron, I haven't taken any pics of my droop limier setup. The mounting points are similar to JM's but I used SS cable to limit the droop. I'll be sure to take some pics after the Holidays or when it stops raining.
  8. Cameron The way you describe how you car handles seems similar to mine. I'm actually surprised that your not having much understeer problems with a big front bar, no rear bar, and stiffer front springs. I think stiffer rear springs will help balance out the car a little better and reduce squat under acceleration. I would try just bumping the rear springs up first and feeling that out. I don't know if you've installed droop limiters on you car but, I've noticed a reduced amount of roll during cornering after I installed some. The car feels much flatter throughout the entire turn. Have you considered a bigger rear wing or wider rear tires to help corner exit speed? What speeds are we talking about here?
  9. Thanks for all the advise. That little chicane is probably the part where i'm most inconsistent. It's really hard to see the other side and it comes up quickly. I've tried just lightly braking before the kink and that's how I had an off. After I removed the rear bar but, I was too chicken to brake there again. Have you found it faster to brake hard then accelerate through, or just plow straight through and lightly let up on the gas? That's my understanding on the issue. Speedtrailusa seems to have a problem with people going off. Hell, they even black flagged me for dropping a wheel off in the dirt and when I had the car completely off I immediately got bitched at on the spot without giving myself time to think about what had happened. I can understand if one is being reckless But, I think I kept things within my limit. Speedventures is the way to go..
  10. Man I need to upgrade on driving on some nicer race tracks. You guys have nice braking marker signs. We have tumble weeds and cracks in the road lol. Typically, how much is it to drive an event at Watkins Glen w/o instruction?
  11. Thanks Mark. Last trackday for good? Never! Probably my last event with the host though. They really make you feel like a suspect and they are the cops who got picked on in high school. Of course. That's probably the main reason why I wanted to take footage. I'm always game for some criticism. I got the mirror on ebay. It's just a cheap CF universal mirror. I really don't know the name is sorry.
  12. I got some oversteer on that quick little chicane after the straight. I counterstreered and had an off. Removed my rearbar and never had an issue after that. I also broke a sensor, harness, scraped the oil pan and exhaust. Going off sucks!
  13. I attended an open track event at the Streets of Wilow Springs last weekend (12-12-10)that was hosted by Speedtrialusa. I did my first event with them years ago and this will probably will be my last. I was hesitant to join the event but the weather forecast for that day was excellent with a high of 70 degrees with no wind. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to test out some new tools and do some tuning before the season was over. Thanks, Dave (Thehelix112) for coming out and taking tire temps and data for me! Got there bright and early to get a prime spot for taking tire temps I just got done extending the front spoiler by 2 inches. Fiberglass, Fun stuff... All that hard work only to go off and ruin it first session... Pics from the photogs Videos:
  14. A little bit on the heavy side but, it looks like a stout trailer. If it's in decent shape and doesn't need any major fixes I would pay up to 1300 for it.
  15. If your car is front heavy I would go as wide a possible up front. Your suspension setup will also play an important role on how much understeer you have.
  16. When mounting the engine make sure the oil pan sump is level. +1 on mounting the engine high for pan clearance issues, esp. if the car's going to be low. Nice work with the rust repair.
  17. I worded that poorly didn't I? I reduced my total droop by 1'' on all four corners. That's a great idea with the feeler gauge and adjusting the rear suspension. I'll have to give that a try.
  18. It doesn't really matter just make sure the shim is thick enough to get the rack tight.
  19. It's kind of ironic that i'm having these issues when this topic came up on Ortiz's newsletter. So what I'm getting from this, and other reading I've been doing, is to setup a RWD car so that it is balanced or neutral on mid to slow speed turns and then playing with rear aero to get the car to stick on high speed turns. Sounds simple enough. However, is simply installing a cheap rear wing going to provide noticeable results without expensive testing? never actually played with aero and wings so i'm just curious.
  20. I had all original 240Z parts on my car. The problem was the tolerances of the bushings, rack , or caps were off. Anyway, I still don;t think this is your problem. dsommer is right you should inspect/ replace all you suspension parts. Youve done everything else but that and those are probably the most critical.
  21. If safety is your main concern an S30 is not a good choice for a daily. It surly isn't the reason why bought mine.
  22. Played around with a few things today with good results. It's getting close to feeling neutral which is what i'm shooting for. I'm sure with a few more track days I'll be able dial things in a lot closer However, not all the changes are considered good. The car is a little trickier to exit a corner and requires better modulation of throttle. Just as Johnc mentioned suspension tuning is all about compromise. I'm hoping setup the car to corner as neutral as possible and then finding alternative ways to get the car to hook up exiting a turn. I might add that I installed droop limiters and played with that for a little bit. The ride is harsh with them on over bumps but, It does keep the car flatter through a turn. Right now i'm setup with 1'' less of droop all around. I'm considering extending it a little more on the rear. It seems kind of 'jumpy' during accel and bumps. Also, in light of all this I picked up Chassis Engineering by Herb Adams. Great little book regarding information on high performance handling. Mainly practical principals with less theory. The kind of stuff that makes you fall in love with this sport all over again.
