Need tips on how to check LS1 motor
240zV8 replied to VinhZXT's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
i think between 150-160 -
i think thats funny, because you know how many hot rods cali has that have engines from other cars. I doubt they'll pull over a 54 chevy to make sure the engine matches.
-
damn, cali sucks for traffic laws. when i was at college there my only vehicle was a sportbike and I drove on a expired motorcycle endorsment for a year and a half, and both times i got pulled over I told them my license was in the mail...lol...

Has anyone tried the new MM140 with Auto-Set?
240zV8 replied to mtcookson's topic in Fabrication / Welding
I was about to buy that one, but I got a mm175 because I need to have the option of welding thick metal for my work. The guy at the store said the autoset feature was a nice upgrade from the previos model. I'm sure it welds the same as the prior models and the normal mm140, because once ur familiar with the infinate controls you wouldn't need the auto set because it's second nature to set the controls when ur welding. It would help alot when starting out though. -
I think operator error was the problem, lol. I had a burn back with the wire a couple times so i think thats what ruined the tip. I don't like flux wire at all, it fills up the nozzle with crusty stuff after just a couple long beads, but it does do good on thicker metal. I gotta just go pickup a cylinder and scrap this flux stuff. $145 for a full 80cuf cylinder is the best I found.

whats the average life of a contact tip? I killed my first one today..lol, i guess i'll just stock up on them. I went through about 3/4 of a 2lbs flux spool. I think flux is alittle harder on the tips than mig. I really need to get a gas bottle and some .024 solid wire, because i need to weld some sheetmetal and .030 flux just isn't cutting it (or should I say it IS cutting it..lol).

the internet has pretty much all the info you need, other than acutal hands on experience painting. Do a google search for "how to paint a car" etc. Like any painting, the biggest factor is good prep work (smooth and very clean surface). You can rush the prep work, but the spots you didn't get fully cleaned will look good for a little, then those nice bubbles and hairline cracks will show up. If you have excessive orange peel with ur base color, just wet sand it down before you spray clear. Single stage you can sand after every coat or after ur done with all the coats, doesn't really matter.

What does the Hybridz Community think of this compressor?
240zV8 replied to wonderllama's topic in Fabrication / Welding
Keep looking for a used one. I got a year old used one for $100 and it was a vertical 26 gallon, oil lubed dual cylinder cast iron and does great with all the tools i got except the sander because it wasn't rated for my cfm but i had it. For $399, or $430 out the door, you could find a 60+ gallon 5 hp for that price. -
all i know is that land itself is getting really expensive here. My dad owns a couple hundred acres in different spots. But a small lot goes for 30k+ if u want anywhere close to the city. You don't really need a kit to build a nice house for yourself, just plan it, and get it approved. Personally i think the foundation is the only 'hard' part in building a 1 story house, the rest is just carpentry and labor. I worked for a construction company all my highschool years, and other than cleanup, it was fun to do. Just plan out everything down to the sq ft of the roof so you can get prices for roofing, insualtion, everything. 1200csq ft is plenty big for 3 bedrooms, thats what i grew up in....

Started the engine yesterday!!
240zV8 replied to V8_DatZun's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I think it would be more important to have the bigger radiator for break in because your not getting alot of air to cool it down when it's just breaking in. Better to be sure you have enough cooling power before you do any damage to that new engine. you can always just keep a real close eye on the temp gauge though. -
I'm going to auburn to check out a Z this weekend, so maybe i'll just swing by when i'm there...thanks for the heads up, i'll take a $100 bill and leave with a truckload of stuff, lol. Mcdonalds does have ribs..lol! well i guess u can call them that. I guess it's more USPS's fault than HF, since they said they shipped it a day after i placed the order...HF has some great deals, but so does Mcdonalds...lol
-
they said it should be here by the 17th...lol... thats only 22 business days of shipping... It's nothing special in the order, just a bunch of random stuff, it's just funny that usps has the worst tracking system and don't know where it is. I just have a feeling it's gonna end up lost like usps did with another shipment I had.
-
I ordered some cutoff wheels, wrenches and some air couplers, and it's been 17 days and nothings arrived. So I called yesterday to get some info, and they said it was suppose to come on the 9th, and then they told me half the order was cancelled because they didn't have them. I don't think i'm gonna buy from them again, the main things I ordered got canceled. Just kind of frustrating, and a warning to others....

Got the Project 240Z back from Paint (56k maybe)
240zV8 replied to zguy95135's topic in Non Tech Board
looks great. I can still see the holes for the side trim on the doors and fenders..are u puting that trim back on? -
I did another long bead on the other side. U can see it started off good from the left, but i had to shift positions half way through while welding, and it messed up my rythme so the weld got ugly again.. there's been no spatter from this flux wire, it's actually not bad (if u use it for what its made for)..lol.
-
the 180 seems like they wanted to boost sales with a new higher model name, i talked to the local guy and he said the parts are all interchangable. I'm glad i didn't get a 4 tapped model like the hobart because every little change in voltage and speed makes a big difference. thanks for the tips, i'll put them to use. I welded a stainless steel wrench with this flux wire just now..lol, it was ugly but really strong.
-
auto trader only goes back to 81', how can u search for z's on there, i just tried.
-
LT1's a great engine, $850 is a good price for a good running one. a stroker is gonna be expensive, so if ur budget is set, you might wanna save some money for other parts of the car and not blow it all on a engine. a Lt1 in any Z will fly for daily driving.

oh man, i didn't eat dinner until like 1am last night...lol, I'm gettin better with this flux wire, i've never really welded alot on my own, just some spot welding on my neigbors welder, but never long beads or anything. here's some more pics..lol me thanks to a blinded camera person Does this look like i'm welding with the right settings? It's .030" flux wire, on about 1/4" steel. the bottom looks like it got great penetration, but i'm still really new to welding so i don't know it's ok, more wire speed, or more voltage? don't mind the top left weld, that was the first weld i did and had it set at like 1 voltage.. and yes i need to work on a steady hand, lol

here's the one i got, i think he's got a bunch of them. http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Miller-Millermatic-175-MIG-Welder-p-n-MIL-907020_W0QQitemZ300067219843QQihZ020QQcategoryZ113743QQtcZphotoQQcmdZViewItem

Flux core wire sucks...lol... although i'm trying to weld (i think) 16 gauge with .030" flux wire... I'm all over the place...lol, the thing is real smooth even with this crappy wire and me not having the right voltage and speed settings..lol. I think first thing is to get a bottle, and only use this flux for outside. I might build a storage rack instead since it came with that free cart. (edited pics up top)

WOW! I have the biggest smile on my face, and i was actually pretty depressed today for some reason. That is until the UPS guy just dropped this off. Now i know how some of you feel when u get that new engine, or new paint job, this is big for me, and i had to post it... thanks for convincing me on the mm175, this thing is amazing, and i never thought it would be this heavy (never picked one up before) edit: I didn't even notice that last thin box on the floor was a brand new Miller cart!! I was like, what the??? I paid $715 total brand new to my door, and I thought i was just getting the new welder. I got it from a place called Quimbycorp on ebay. There in portland, shipping was free and it only took 2 days. But i'm in shock that it came with a cart...so here's some pics of that http://img242.imageshack.us/my.php?image=im000782gm9.jpg
