  1. I contacted a local shop about dyno-tuning my 76 Z, they wanted to know what do people typically use for tuning on the older Z's? Anyone? I've been searching and I see lot's of standalone options, I'm still not sure which one would be easiest/affordable. Using the stock ECU, what tuning software can be used? I looked at Nistune which sounded fairly simple and effective, but they said the 84 Z31 VG30E/ET was the first model digital ECU they were compatible with. Any ideas/recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
  2. Thanks guys. You are right Mark, I have to be careful. When he tells me he got a "B" I have to work hard not to be critical (hypocritical in my case) because I know he could do better. I try to be as straight with him as possible. I rely on the old "I want you to always do the best you can" a lot.
  3. My son is a straight A 6th grade student (I know, it's still early), and he's in the advanced math and Literature classes. He gets his math-ability from his mother. As part of the advanced classes they let him take the SAT college placement tests this year and he scored 500 in math and 540 in critical reading. In 2007 college bound seniors (12th graders) averaged Critical reading: 502 Mathematics: 515 I'm really proud of him.
  4. I'm in Wheaton. Not too far from Sweetleaf in Glenn Ellyn (my kid's favorite restaurant is Barone's downtown Glenn Ellyn). Who do you work for Sweetleaf? My Z is still in Iowa City (stored at my parents, about 45 miles from Tannji).
  5. I'm pretty sure my son when he turns 46 and I finally let him have the car (I'll be 75 then, he's 11 now) will have to... fix the turn signal because for some reason it will always stay on wd-40 the gas pedal because it'll probably never be driven over 50 mph he'll probably have to lower the seat as I'll have raised it as I shrunk he'll have to replace the brakes once I start driving with one foot on the gas and one on the brake like my Dad he'll probably have to uninstall the massive mirrors I install so I don't have to turn my head when backing out of parking spaces I'm hoping that when he turns 75 (2 years from now) my Dad will give me the '48 mercury conv. in his garage. Seriously, the occasional wisp of smoke I've seen from behind the steering wheel makes me nervous.
  6. I married a woman with an original 70 Chevelle SS 396. Her father bought it new in the summer of 69 and she's been driving it since High-school. We have video of her as a little girl roller skating up and down the driveway next to it. We originally thought it'd be fun to let one of our kids drive it to high school but with the values the way they are it seems like a bad idea.

  8. 40 minutes to go. I haven't even blinked in an hour. A used car salesman ghillie suit.
  9. Here's another option http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Jaguar-XJS-Turbo-5-speed-One-of-a-kind-No-Reserve_W0QQitemZ170081398084QQihZ007QQcategoryZ6275QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  10. My three kids (Jackson, 6; Lucy, 8; Kevin, 11) and I have been taking Karate for almost two years now. We are studying a combination of Tang Soo Doo, Hapkido, and Taekwondo. It has been fun and while the younger two have their up's and downs learning the various katas it is a great feeling when they really step it up. My youngest even cut himself off from playing his gameboy until he graduated for one belt (almost two weeks of no Nin-Ten-Do form) , he really made me proud.
  11. Thanks guys, I contacted the standard transmission guys, we'll see what they say.
  12. I have a broken 4.38 differential (a friend bought it from Arizona Z car in the mid to late 80's) I think it came from an early 80's pick-up, it is stamped 35:8. I had it in my car for one summer of fun. The summer fun ended when a couple of teeth broke off of the smaller cog (one of the small internal rings with 8 teeth). My friend who sold it to me and I put the stock unit back in. Does anyone know if this can be repaired? Where would I get the parts? Does this broken unit have value to anyone? I have been watching for a 3.7 or 3.9 or a LSD that wouldn't break the bank (like everybody else in here I'm sure) I also have a 2nd, stock r200 3.54 unit just hanging out in my garage. Thanks for any input/advice (I searched on broken differential, fix differential and a couple others but I didn't see a parallel thread) -Kirk
  13. I have a Ford boat-tail speedster 1928 Model A that I bought 5 years ago. Apparently it was raced for several years in vintage racing about 30 years ago I don't know too much about it beyond that. It is a blast to drive 3 speed with a 2 speed rear end. 6-volt, mechanical brakes, high compression flat head inline 4. It's an awesome parade car and the 2 fast and 2 furious crowd (and my kids) love it when I pop the clutch and squeal the tires during a parade. I'll try to attach a picture next time I'm checking out H-Z from home, but I found a somewhat similar style here. http://www.significantcars.com/cars/1929aspeedster/index.htm
  14. I came in late and somewhat embarrassed to my first Lyric poetry class (I know, I know but there were lots of pretty girls in the writing classes and I registered late that year) and there she was. I found out she was driving an original 70 chevelle SS 396 (I had my Z) and that night I told my parents "I met a really cool girl today and guess what - she likes cars!" Our first date we talked until about 3:00 in the morning (I didn't tell her I was being picked up for work at 5:00, I slept in the front yard so I wouldn't miss my ride...FYI we weren't drinking). It's been 17 years and 3 kids since then. We still have the Z and the chevelle. Good luck!
  15. How about a panel within the hood instead of the whole hood. You could use the existing hinges/latch and put a clear insert within it.
  16. Frankie is OK with me too. I bought a turbo set-up and intercooler from him but I haven't pulled my car out of storage to install it yet. I also bought a ported/polished intake manifold from him and everything looks good but we won't be sure until it's all put together. P.S. I'm betting a buzz cut vs the mullet
  17. Sorry Violacleff. What are you looking to get for the 2 1/2 in Intercooler kit with Turbohoses couplers and greddy flange?

    Life?

I would think omputer repair would be a good area, but a lot of companies are going in-house with the whole IT department thing. How about doing something like this for side money or to help fund school. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MegaSquirt-2-Fuel-Injection-and-Ignition-Controller_W0QQitemZ8053374681QQcategoryZ33553QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  19. Thanks everyone... those were some totally quick responses. You were all completely correct I was mixing the turbo and intercooler (stupid, I know). 240Hoke you aren't being an *** by giving good advice. I am researching as we speak. I'll definitely need to check out Corky's book. I jumped the gun and bought the components for the turbo and intercooler from a guy who has supplied me with other parts previously so I trust him (he's from NC too - Fayettesville). I am keeping my eye out for a Turbo Oil pan but I'm also watching the funds. I am planning a low boost (5-7 psi) set up and keeping my compression where it is for now (10.5:1). Feel free to tell me if you think it's the wrong way to go (I'm still researching )
  20. I'm adding a turbo to my 76 780Z and I don't have a turbo oil pan so I will have to tap my pan for the oil return from the intercooler. Any tricks/advice would be helpful. How hard is it to remove the oil pan? Anybody have Pics of where exactly I should tap it? I'm pulling my car out of storage in the next week or two so I can start working on it again. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to Hybrid Z but I've had my Z since 1984 (high school). Thanks!
  21. I currently have a 3.0 stroker built by Rebello with a ported head, ported intake, throttle body 3" cold air intake, etc... This last weekend I bought a turbo set-up from a guy (must...go...faster...). I'll know more when I get it but he's been reliable in the past and he said it is almost complete just a little working for the intercooler piping. Here's my thoughts, I'm running about 10.5:1 compression and have a nice torquey low end if I run a low boost 6-7 psi I shouldn't detonate on pump gas and I should scream like my little girl as I run down the road. But I have been known to oversimplify things and I'm wondering if anyone has any advice for a set-up like this. The turbo set up has a 3" downpipe and an intercooler from a supra 2jz. Thanks!
