  1. dale, thanks for the info. let me know how it all works once u get it fired up! anyone else who has their swap running that can provide input? david
  2. i searched and can't seem to locate what size lines [feed & return] everyone is using for the ls1 swap. i found info on how to plumb the return, incorporate a pressure regulator & pump. i'm putting a 76 280 fi tank into my 240 and the shop that 'boiled it out' said that he can also braze "an fittings" on the tank, just need to know the size. want to get them attached prior to painting. also, any recommendations on; fuel pumps, fuel filter [an fitting & in-line], pressure regulator & fuel rails greatly appreciated! thanks, david
  3. i really have no way to tell. i'm [i believe] the 4th owner. i powerwashed after the pic was taken-no chemicals, just plain water [found some old posts that the alum doesn't take too kindly to caustic liquids]. my first thought other than a leaking gasket is the fact that when i drained the coolant it was green and i've read gm recommends the dextron stuff which i believe is orange-due to it's more cooperative nature with aluminum. figured i'd ask the experts and if there is a problem, tackle it before i drop in the engine... clutch was hosed and the flywheel needed to be turned-after only 20,044 miles!
  4. tim, i edited my post with a link to an album page. it's the first image. david
  5. hey all, here's a pic of the back of my 01 ls1 engine. only 20k miles when i pulled it from the trans am ws6 wreck. i'm at a loss as to the grey/white powdery stuff in the middle of the pic as well as the reddish brown granular stuff above that. anyone have any ideas as to what it is or if i even need to worry about it? when i drained the coolant, it was green-i'm assuming it was changed after the car was in the accident [hit right front] but have no way to tell if it was the dextron compatable stuff. here's a link ot the pic... http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=1750
  6. maichor, thanks-no the radiator was in tact when i received the car. althought it looked like the previous owner started to fix the car. the hoses looked like the originals and it didn't appear that either the radiator or even ac condensor was touched. the car was hit in the right front and did some damage to the suspension components & steering rack. it may make sense to just replace the gaskets while i have both time and it's out of the car and easily accessible.
  7. update-finally pulled the engine and tranny from the donor car last week and separated eng from trans. only 20k miles and the clutch looks like it's on the way out & flywheel needs turning. curious is the tan/light brownish color residue around the backside of the engine-0.25" either side [top/bottom] of the head gaskets. there's also a white powdery residue that looks like remnants of a leak down the middle of the [backside] of the engine. funny, when i drained the coolant it was green. isn't the ls1 supposed to use the funny colored stuff? anyone have any ideas on whether i need to replace head &/or intake gaskets?
  8. 73 speed, i have the stock cats from my 01 ta available. i'm in ny and my ls1 is going into my 73 so i have no need for them. the catch-when the car was wrecked the lower a arm hit the pass side cat. when i got it and fired it up it blew the guts of the cat out. so the pass side is essentially hollow. pm me if you're interested.
  9. i've had a header "blanket" on my header for about 10 years now. i did it in an attempt to keep heat away from my jcr supercharger intake manifold which is in very close proximity [less than 0.5"] to the header. the 6 into 1 header is coated using swain technology's "white lightning" thermal barrier coating. no corrosion, rust or other problems noted so far...

    gas tank

i just pulled the tank from my ls1 donor car-2001 trans am ram air. if you're interested, tank, pump, wiring, etc., best offer takes it! by the way, it seems to have a 1 way valve for the filler neck. any suggestions on how to remove the fuel from the tank? no drain plug... i thought i'd power up the pump to drive the fuel out.
  12. ruf, i'm running [under stock fenderwells-with coilovers] 235.40.17's-no clearance probs at all. my tire measures 9.5" from sidewall to sidewall. the wheel is 8.5" from inner bead to bead. i think i could go just a tad wider and may do so when these are due replacement. david
  13. terry, once again leading the way and lighting the tunnel for the rest of us!
  14. jmort & quick240, i know juan [jsk], he lives in albany, ny [other end of the state from me] and i can get a number to reach him if you, or others need. pm me if you need and i'll give u my work number. i know he also cnc's the fuel rails as well for 280's and zx's. you know my thougths on the brakes, best advice is to do some research, listen to those who know what they're talking about-like pete paraska, john coffey, mike kelly and so forth. then...take the plunge. i believe phantom is also looking or is currently upgrading his brakes. david
  15. shoz-my car is in rochester and if you come out this august you can see it run at watkins glen during the 05 convention [http://www.zccaconvention.com]. registration is up and running! the other z is laverne burkharts from the ontario [canada] z club. he's put quite a bit more time and $$$$$$$$$$$ in his z than i have. he realized years ago that the holley projection is actually projunk and replaced that system using an electromotive with 7 fuel injectors [1 for each cyl and 1 ahead of the blower to give it a bit of lube]. i'm certain his car is making quite a bit more power than mine because i'm still running the handicapped projunk fuel mismanagement system that came with the setup when i purchased it back in...91. ken, didn't acutally toast the tires, although in one of the clips you'll see that i stop the car then as the camera rolls again i'm getting back in-then about 5' from the driv rear tire there's a foot long strip of rubber tread which i had to pull off the tire cause it was flapping in the tire well. otherwise they seemed to be in pretty good shape. the wheels came on a parts car that is my avatar.
  16. joshua, here's a link to my terribly sophomoric video of my z...actually there are a few to check out! http://www.zccr.net/site/modules.php?set_albumName=album26&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php&page=2
  17. thanks for the plug joey! 1. Year of motor/mods-01 from 20k mile ws6 trans am-will be using the sanderson shorty's that jtr has now 2. Tranny-t56 6spd, custom driveshaft 3. Kit used or explanation of your custom mounts. none yet, will decide later this year to use johns or jtr [if they make them] 4. Any special accessories or parts needed for the swap, including fuel, wiring, etc.-will be using a custom speartech and reprogram pcm 5. Date you started on the project, date finished. started last fall when i found the totalled trans am 6. Other car mods (suspension, brakes, etc.)-purchased my 1tuffz in october 1984 when i came back from my overseas tour in korea. currently, 6pt autopower cage, recaro's, schrote 4pt harnesses, arizona rear's & mike kelly front suspensoin parts, ground control coilovers, compomotive 17" wheels, nismo lsd in a 3.9 r200, 81 zx n/a 5spd, jim cook racing supercharger "kit" [which i'll pull after the convention this year and sell to help fund the project], ross' big brakes and cv halfshaft conversion parts. my plan is to have my ls1 z running next spring. i did get a gas tank from david in maryland. just had all the nice varnish boiled out! if you do a cut-n-paste with the link in my signature there are pics. also, here's a link to our club site with some video as well, enjoy- update-finally pulled the engine and tranny from the donor car last week and separated eng from trans. only 20k miles and the clutch looks like it's on the way out, flywheel needs turning. curious is the brownish color residue around the backside of the engine-either side [top/bottom] of the head gaskets. there's also a white powdery residue that looks like remnants of a leak down the middle of the [backside] of the engine. funny, when i drained the coolant it was green. isn't the ls1 supposed to use the funny colored stuff? anyone have any ideas on whether i need to replace head &/or intake gaskets? http://www.zccr.net/site/modules.php?set_albumName=album26&op=modload&name=Gallery&file=index&include=view_album.php
  18. go to his website and email him directly from there [http://www.modern-motorsports.com]
  19. for nearly 25 or so years now i've been going to the local parking lots late at night once we've had our first good snow-especially if i haven't driven that car in the snow yet. it gives me the opportunity to shake down the handling of the particular car as well as renew my winter driving skills. who knew to call it drifting? i just used to try to hang out the tail as long as possible without spinning out! never been stopped, but if i were i'd simply fess up as to what & why i was doing it. when my kids are old enough, i'll teach them as well. probably has something to do with why i've not had any "wreck problems". i also will test the driving surface almost every time i'm out-braking, cornering, etc.-just in case that moron pulls out in front, stops short or whatever!
  20. hey jason, my name is david. i've had my 1tuffz license plate in ny state for 20 or so years now and it's also my screen name for; hybrid, zcar.com, classic z car, my club website-zccr.net, ebay, strictly z and others. the difference is that you capitalize your Z and i [z] do not. would you consider changing your screen name so no one will confuse us going forward? i'd certainly appreciate it.
  21. ruben, i'm not sure of the specs, but feel free to call alan at motorsport specialities. they have all the specs we used to build the wheels with. and no, i don't have any clearance issues whatsoever. i did try them on my 83 zx turbo but they rubbed on the spring perch in the rear.
  22. 2126, correct-my wheels are compomotive, 8.5" wide, tire is a 235.40.17 and measures approx 9.25" sidewall to sidewall. zero clearance issues with no flares and coilovers. i'm considering going to a wider tire when i replace these. http://www.usacomp.com and click on modular wheels...
  23. i have compomotive's on my z, 17 x 9's with a yoko 235.40.17 tire. coilovers, no flares and i still have a bit of room left and may go slightly wider with my next set of tires. below is a link to our club website with a look at my wheels. bought them from motorsport specialities in pa. http://www.usacomp.com dealt with alan and they now have all the specs for our z cars. we spent time back & forth before actually sending me the first wheel to test fitment. http://www.usacomp.com/Modular.htm [page that shows the wheels that are available] http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=1750
  24. j., i've been kicking around some ideas for when i upgrade my gauges and think i may build a pod to house 2 gauges that will be integraded "onto" my steering column cover. i have an extra that i'm going to mock up. my design will be to have 2 x 2 5/8" gauges side by side, high beam indicator above and in the middle, with my turn signal indicators on either side and check engine light [for the ls1 pcm] below the high beam light. i plan on doing them all in correct color led's. of course, if we could talk vinny into doing the steering column cover in cf... that keeps the gauges in my most direct scan pattern, my fresh air vent and heater control panel unmolested and nothing on top or near the dash top. done rambling...
