  1. Here's the way I'm going to view it, it's one 500e, and as long as it's getting cut up it's getting treated as it deserves. I'm sure there are plenty of people that feel that way about someone cutting up a Series on 240Z. The man has obviously invested a tremendous amount of time and money into the project so it's his to do as he wishes. It's not like there are tons of people lining up to cut up 500e's, but I do agree on rarity.
  2. I'd be ok with any diff that allowed me to cruise at 70mph or better at less than 3k.
  3. I'd love to find a 16v getrag (same as the one used in the E30 M3) unfortunately it's only 1:1 top gear, so It would be necessary to source a taller rear gear than something like a 3.54
  4. The Northstar wasn't exactly designed to be an easily rebuldable motor, like blackice said, the block (in many cases) requires time-certs for the head bolts and the block is a die-cast open block design. Good for temperature control and cost effectiveness (uses less material than sand cast) but not so great for big power numbers. Who knows though?
  5. Tony, is the pressure applied to the thrust bearing linear to the output of the compressor?
  6. I swear the Swede's are crazy. Here's probably the most in-deapth Mercedes build I've seen. Hope it's not a repost, but I figure many of you might find some of the stuff done on it quite interesting. http://mymbonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7159&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
  7. If you're not using the car, just harvesting it for the motor, sell the sway bars and brakes to W201 guys. If you sell just those two I know for a fact you could profit on the car.
  8. The Spridget's aren't that bad. If you get it and it needs electrical (it will) or mechanical help, let me know. I've spent way too much time and thrown way to much money at BL cars. The worst part of these cars is rust. Even though they're from an Island country that rains entirely too much, they rust like it's their job.
  9. Hmm. That should be enough if I'm delicate. I wonder what the 5 speed W202 C class trans will take? It looks very similar to the BMW getrag trans.
  10. What then did Audi make between the Quattro S series and the Type D, or really when they got out of F1? I think that time difference is greater than between 35 and 55 for the SLR. I'm not saying I don't like Audi. But I do feel that whoever designed them intentionally made them a PITA to work on. I could never own one since it would probably cause me to be committed.
  11. Don't get me wrong, I thing any Merc aside from W201's and W124 500e's are Buses. The W201's and E30's both fought like Dogs for many years (I personally am of the belief they were basically equal cars, but the E30's were piloted by better drivers) in DTM. I've always loved the W201 because it's relatively light for the time period (featherweight for Mercedes) even for a 4 door and It can handle (and run if poked with the right bit of persuasion) in a way that far exceeded its appearance. In Europe I always see BMW and Benz like Ford and Chev here. Love one hate the other. Why cant we all be unified? Against Audi...
  12. You are putting the thrust bearing (the big wide one with the two big thick bronze lips in the middle bearing right? That would be main bearing 4. It's the only main cap that is threaded for a puller aside from the rear bearing.
  13. Well being not dead is more important than figuring out how much power I can throw at a tranny before it pops. So do that first (I feel you though, I've had all sorts of respiratory infections for the last week) And I guess I'll start taking pictures again. Sigh. You guys are making me be productive.
  14. Since you say you've never built an engine before, 1 fast Z is asking for Total Indicated Runout.
  15. Will you find an LSD by then? My L series Z will go as fast as I can push it! So take whatever time a pruis does it in and add a tenth.
  16. 1. What are your clearances? 2. Did you make sure none of the main caps are on backwards (it's happened before)? 3. Quantify "a lot of force" 4. Did you check to see if the crank is bent? I.e. put bearings on mains 1&7, put the thing in there and spin it with a dial gauge in the middle?
  17. So how demoralizing is it when your car gets walked on by a Taxi?
  18. Excellent! What all was done to the motor between trips?
  19. I believe we have talked as well. The hardest part for me is finding the C36 rods not attached to the rest of the C36. Luckily here in the corn belt E85 is plentiful and cheap So I'm going to see what a smaller displacement motor can make before I dump some stroke in it. Your W210 was already quick and a Z is just a fraction of that weight. Have you got your other motor lined up yet? I never heard if you were going M113/M119/M120 or any of the new M2xx engines.
  20. Nah, it was at pic-a-part in Indy last summer. I need to hit up Grade A some time soon though.
  21. I've always viewed an 'externally balanced' engine as one that uses weights outside the engine crankcase to assist in balancing the reciprocating assembly. I view an internally balanced engine as one that does not have any offset weight added to either the damper or flexplate/flywheel. That would mean that they have neutral balance, or that they are in balance without the other components of the reciprocating assembly.
  22. Well played. This is the point I believe that someone comes in and informs us that this is expected as Nissan and Mercedes have obviously been collaborating since the 50's with prince and that it was obvious it was a group effort. *NOTE: I'm fully aware this is a lie (trust me), so there is no need for anyone to get their panties all in a bunch*
  23. True, but many other V8's are externally balanced. The Ford's come to mind. Below is an aftermarket balancer for a 302. I speak from experience when I last got my mini crank balanced by some yay-hoo's at a 'respected' shop around here and they asked for the flywheel (which is lapped onto the crank with only one giant bolt at the end) and the not thinking anything of it, I gave them both to them and they ended up taking material out of everything but the crank! Needless to say I was not happy.
