  1. You know you own a Datsun when everyone in the highschool parking lot asks who's porsche is that? You know you own a Datsun when a week after you begin owning it the battery grounds to the cam cover sending the harness up in flames...... right in front of your school. You know you own a Datsun when you've replaced all the weather stripping but still get exhaust coming in? You know you own a Datsun when everyone you meet and their uncle either had one or knew somebody who had one. You know you own a Datsun when you mention cutting and welding, and guys who already put coilovers on their cars look at you funny.. You know you own a Datsun when you are referred to as "Original Gangstah" by a civic owner. You know you own a Datsun when you can disassemble most of the car with a 10mm and 12mm socket piece. You know you own a Datsun when you hear a slight clunk upon shifting (I can't be the only one.) You know you own a Datsun when your dad spent 20 years restoring a 1969 Mustang Mach 1, and people at a car show refer to him as "The guy with the 280z" despite the Z being worth half the Mustang's paint job. (True story)
  2. Wow that is impressive, if the car has a motor swap they may be native to the car the engine came from. That's where I'd start.
  3. Ah thanks. That could have been a bad mistake to cut it off. While we're on the topic of have any of you had door hinges that pop or squeak? I just replaced my driver's door hinge because the spring broke and now is making this god awful noise no matter how much I lubricate it.
  4. I have these upper door weather strips I'm installing. They have these flaps and I can't figure out where they go. Are they just extra; left over from the molding or do they tuck in somwhere? Do I need to take the window trim out to fit this piece? Here are some pictures that should help, keep in mind the piece not attached to the door is a reverse of the one that is, because it goes to the other side of the car.
  5. Trying to economize on a NOS system sounds like an all around bad idea... leave that to the ricers. IMHO
  6. Searched around bit and couldn't find anything too specific on this swap. I went down to the local junkyard this weekend and managed to snag some interior parts out of a 280z, near perfect door panels and some intact plastic parts. While I was there I also saw a 300zx. Now, I'm thinking about going to a coilover suspension system soon (provided I can find someone to do the welding and maybe the cutting) and I figure that while I'm there I might as well upgrade the brakes if it's not too much extra work. Will 300zx brakes fit my 280z? (Running Rota RB's 17x9/9.5) What other parts will I need besides the calipers? Will new rotors be required? What will be required to mount it? What are the advantages? Just few snaps from the junkyard:
  7. ^bump. Can we sticky that post somewhere? Like general engine forum? You wouldn't believe how hard it was to find that same information. I finally gave up looking/trying to figure it out and went to my dad.
  8. Santa Baby.... won't you bring me some Tokico's too, adjustable blue.

  9. Had this same problem last week, bad sender. This week I had no oil pressure... I wasn't as lucky.
  10. Ah sorry, almost forgot, clogged check valve.
  11. With a little help from my dad I got everything timed correctly and the car is running again. Oil pressure seems fine after I let a little oil out, functions normally even when driven hard. Just needs a little tune up and the distributor to get the horses running. Thanks y'all. I'll probably be back on here again after Christmas unless I post a thread about Z car's and reliability because my girlfriend's dad is CONVINCED that you can't take an old car and make it reliable. His friend who built cars for Jay Leno told him blah blah blah.
  12. The two punch marks on the oil pump and drive spindle need to line up but how do I know what position to put the drive spindle in?
  13. Does anyone have a link for timing the engine with the distributor drive shaft? I get the concept but I'm not sure exactly how to line everything up.
  14. Just a quick tip, when I first got my Z it had all sorts of problems like this. 85%+ of the problems were fixed by sanding down the contacts on the fuse box.
  15. Got it out but now the timing is way off... great
  16. Yeah the stock gauges suck, that's next on my list of things to replace. I don't trust them either. Even my speedometer is like 10 mph off. But back to the oil pump, since I have a new one I'm going to go ahead and replace it.* I've unbolted the old one but I can't seem to get it past the sway bar, and tips/trick? I tried jacking up the car from the front but that didn't seem to help much. Edit: *When I rebuilt the engine, I did not rebuild the pump.
  17. Not sure how to respond to that, you mean the check ball?
  18. Because I already bought a new one. I don't know where else the problem could be, it's not the gasket surface of the filter, and the check ball seems*** to be working OK...
  19. Oh Alfa Romeos....... my dad has one. The radiator cap popped off when my school had this senior parade thing. I thought I'd really blown something. My girlfriend and I were running back to this kid's house to grab water bottles, made it just in time before all the cars started moving. My dad fixed the car with a rubber band and paper clip once, and I fixed it with duct tape the other night. Of course more permanent fixes were done later.
  20. Thanks for the advice guys, I went ahead and ordered a pump from autozone a couple of hours ago. NewZed asked a good question. All I know is the first time it blew, it leaked oil from the end of my neighborhood to the other side of town 30 minutes away. When my dad saw the oil on the street and called to tell me to check my gauges they looked normal. I pulled into a parking lot and sure enough there was a puddle underneath the car as soon as I stopped, and the dipstick showed no oil. Good thing my dad saw that because I would not have noticed those gauges because they are hard to see at night especially with oncoming traffic. Gotta get me some prosport evo gauges, they even flash red when there's a problem.
