  1. 88 BMW 535i... I think I am averaging about 17-18mpg. That's mostly highway with 15%-25% city driving.
  2. I waited 10 days. Got it January 6th... It's nice to have connections at Nikon.
  3. Work 2 jobs, totalling about 60 hours a week. One of them is a small (but growing fast) tuning shop that I own. Doesn't leave much time for other stuff. But when I find time I am autocrossing, or shooting things with a slightly different weapon than others on this board it seems...
  4. Please try using the search function before posting. I just searched for compressison ratio and had over 500 threads talking about it. I am sure with a little refinement you can find exactly what you are looking for in the search. This topic has been discussed ad nauseum here.
  5. They are really sweet cars actually. Lots of fun, lots of character.
  6. We had no funding from the university at all until year 2-3. All funds raised by ourselves. It was extremely difficult, totally time consuming, and it made schoolwork total hell. It's almost impossible to find enough time for everything. That said, if not for FSAE I would have lost my mind with the schoolwork. FSAE became a reason to do my work, so that I could stick around to do more FSAE. I would never have graduated if not for my involvement with FSAE, and the experience was by far the best part of university for me.
  7. Do it! One of the most rewarding experienced in my life was helping start an FSAE team at my university. It's a wonderful experience. 5 years later they are still going and getting faster all the time.
  8. There is a lot of bending loads on that lower rod end... threads tend to fail when placed in bending. I would suspect that the lower rod end failed first, causing the other parts to fail a bit later in the impact. You'd get ripped apart for doing that in FSAE, not sure how stringent the judges are in baja in comparison.
  9. Is the lower one the heim joint you broke?
  10. Why squish it? What difference are you making to the spider population in your area, really? In truth that thing is probably eating many more annoying and dangerous pests, things that could and would actually cause you harm. (you know, mice, ticks, ants, small children) Sorry, just never understood the "holy **** it's ugly, kill it" mindset. Maybe because I'm ugly and I value my life.
  11. Solidworks has a list of dealers on their website, the one I've dealt with is CAE Northwest. A seat of a full on professional package runs about $5,000, but there are other options out there that are less expensive, especially if you are a student. BTW, nice renderings Kinked_Chrome! I've been down that road with our FSAE car too for our documentation, and yours came out really well. It's a lot of work but very worthwhile in the conceptual stages!
  12. Teach it to yourself outside of school. If you are studying engineering you will be able to find a bunch of other uses for it with your class work, and it's entirely possible that it will get you a job down the road. It's a worthwhile skill set to have, and it isn't very hard to learn the basics.
  13. It gets old, fast... but it's a hell of a lot better than the alternatives!
  14. OK, very quick sketch here of what I mean... Nothing to scale really, just trying to get the idea across. The rod end would have the threaded portion pointed "up" in this picture, towards the control arm. (yes, it's upside down)
  15. More or less what I mean, yeah. I am sure you can do it in a nice tidy package with a bit of fiddling. If I wasn't at work I'd do up a sketch.
  16. It's pretty hard to go tighter than stock with the rod end in line with the tube, isn't it? I would think that if your end link bracket was such that the rod end attached out of line with the axis of the tube you could get a whole lot more adjustment out of it. Can't you just move your rod end mounting point down (towards the ground)?
  17. They are slicks, Hoosier sprint tires. I believe the compound was 2030, or possibly M30.
  18. Yeah I think I am ok, with coilovers with 8" tall springs and ZG flares.
  19. I've got a line on some barely used Hoosier sprint car front tires... 24x11x15. Thoughts? I can get them all day long really cheap...
  20. 8 hours is a HUGE amount of time on a dyno for 1 car, if it's a load control dyno. Unless you are setting up a full stand alone from scratch on a car that needs every ounce of power out of it, 8 hours is robbery. 3-4 tops on a good dyno with a competant tuner. You could probably get away fine without a fan on a baseline, 4th gear pull. (I've never tried without a fan honestly, it's 15 seconds work to add the fan, and both the customer and I are happier with it there) 1/4 mile though is really excessive without a fan. Not cool. (pun!) Another reason I recommend DD units is the training that goes with the purchase of the unit. Yet another reason why it costs so much more as well.
  21. Actually I believe that was Norm's last post on Hybridz. If you can't play by our rules, then you just can't play...
  22. We do not use air temp compensation for turbocharged vehicles... by the time you get the air from the filter (where you place the thermocouple) to the TB on a turbo car the temp has changed so much that you aren't really helping your cause at all. We bump up the tire pressure to maximum rated for the tires too. The smaller contact area of the tire tends to have it deform more, leading to greater losses at low pressure. By bumping up the pressure we keep the deformation, as well as heat and hp loss, to a minimum.
  23. Hahahahahahahaha, we call that "rust free" up here.
  24. What's up with the sway bar mounting points? They are awefully close to the tube...
