  1. I got MSnS-Extra code installed on my setup. Everything seems to be working right except the fuel pump prime when the key is turned on. I installed version 021p to start with. I recompiled the code so it had my inc files to use the nissan temp sensor. I used the download batch file which lets you download new code without having to ground the bootloader pin. I installed and used MegaTune225b331. Followed the instructions in the help.txt file that comes with the 021p code download. They tell you how to change the setting.ini file in megatune for extra code. They also tell you how to copy the msns-extra.ini file into megatune. Then you have all features available in one megatune. I had to re-enter all of my settings manually, I didn't even try to reload the msq file after reading that it probably wouldn't work. Expanded my fuel and ignition tables to 12x12. Checked all possible settings in megatune to make sure they were turned off or defaults. also had to recalibrate tps since I lost the throttle inc file The car fired right up, re-checked ignition timing--OK Checked that 4 pin HEI does not get hot--OK Took it for a drive and it runs just like before Now I can start to play with the new features. In order to have the unit control my cooling fan relay I have to install a small transistor circuit to drive the relay. I am going to upgrade the code now to 021u and to megatune225b358. I already loaded the msq file over from 021p to 021u and that worked so I don't have to re-enter everything a second time. This should fix the fuel pump prime issue. I'll let you know when that is done. For the average person there is prbably no reason to upgrade, but I want that cooling fan relay control, maybe boost control, knock detection, AFR target tables, dwell control for other ignition modules, shift lights,......
  2. It looks to me like if you use megatune 331 then you can cahnge the settings in the ini file so it sets itself up for reagular MSnS(labeled as Magnus' MSnS in the ini file) or you can set it up for MSnS_Extra, or of course regular MS. At any rate once you set this up it will allow you to tune fuel and spark from one megatune. I did this with the extra code and there was also another file to copy into the cfg directory and now the megatune lets you do all the cool stuff from cooling fan control, traction control, nitrous control, fuel, spark, yada yada from the one megatune window. Very nice. I am not sure if Magnus' MSnS requires an extra file in the cfg directory but it should be easy to find this info in the megatune forum. Magnus' MSnS is what the sticky is based on right now, but extra code will be in there shortly. I'm getting rid of my marginal summit fan controller that requires the probe in the upper radiator hose and just using the MSnS_Extra to run the relay. Get rid of some extra components and wiring.
  3. On my entire setup I only have two condensers for filtering (both where stock types that came on my 73 240z). One of them is at the coil to filter noise and the other one is on the BW wire(the 12v ignition switched wire) at the alternator. I don't have any other capacitors for filtering right now and everything still seems to be working fine.
  4. I with Tony, the Extra code is the way to go. I'll be upgrading next week now that my alternator swap is finished and all of my melted wires have been replaced from the previous owner.
  5. I wanted to copy these questions out of private mail for other interested people to see. These are some good basic questions about MegaSquirt: probably, but thats what makes it fun heh heh heh
  6. I wouldn't expect it until mid to late summer, but there is no set date. Most of the code for MSII is the same so maybe it will make it sooner.
  7. All the links are in the beginning of the sticky. I wouldn't wait for ultra unless you need coil on plug, sequential injection, or you want the wideband controller built in. Otherwise you can do about anything with megasquirt or megasuirtII(available in January?? as add on proceesor card).
  8. Yes, no Air Flow Meter needed with megasquirt. The megasquirt is a speed density computer that uses a MAP sensor (manifold absolute pressure). Speed desnity systems use the MAP sensor in the intake manifold, other systems have to measure the amount of air coming in so they use a mass air flow meter or a flapper type meter like the 280zx. Sometimes it is hard to use speed density sytem if you have a big cam because the intake manifold pressure fluctuates and causes problems with the MAP reading. I don't know all of the issues, but if you want to run a really big cam make sure you research and see if speed density will work for you.
  9. Yes, if you use the megasquirtnspark code or the megasquirtnspark_extra code you can control fuel and ignition. The sticky talks more about that. I am just in the process of using the extra code which has many more features and allows easier use of everything.
  10. I am ready to upgrade to MSnS extra on my 240z turbo because it has many new functions and also everything can be tuned from one MegaTune window using version 331 of megatune. I will also be installing MSII next month on a different car that is a non-turbo sbc. Right now it seems like MSnS extra has a few advantages over MSII for turbo cars. Some of the functions in the extra code are AFR target tables (can use with my tech edge wideband), larger maps for fuel and ignition, nitrous control, boost control, knock detection, dwell control, etc. Does anyone see a reason to use MSII on turbo engines at this point? The MSII has IAC control which will be nice for chevy V8 installs. I am looking to update the install guide to only talk about MSnS extra once my conversion is finished. That should help because the old MSnS doesn't have much support these days.
  11. At Dan's request I sent him links to about 60 megasquirt threads in the archives. Whenever he has time these will get moved over here. They answer a lot of basic questions so hold on and the info will arrive. Of course you can always use the search and find these until they get moved.
  12. Are you using the 020i9 extra code or just the 020i code? I am ready to switch over to the extra code and noticed both are in the download section, but the readme says to use the 020i9.
  13. MegasquirtII has been in beta test for a week or two now. Looks like it will be available in January. This is the upgrade to the current board to support a new processor and give more options for fuel and ignition control. I plan to upgrade from MSnS to MSII when it is out. Also I will be installing MSII on a tpi sbc as soon as it comes out. No word on UltraMegasuirt though.
  14. Doing the swap to internal regulated GM alternator on my 240z and man what a mess I oncovered. I hadn't looked too close at the wiring around the stock alternator, but when I started this swap I noticed the ground wire looked to have melted in the past and someone had just re-wrapped it with black tape. I started unwrapping the whole wiring harness from the alternator back to below the battery and sure enough the original big ground wire had shorted and made a melting pot out of the wiring harness. Its a wonder anything worked. Looks like I'll only have to replace a handfull of wires and put in a new heavy ground. Glad I found this before driving any more. So much for a simple alternator swap.
  15. With the advent of the new megasquirt forum I had Superdan delete the settings from the normal download area and I attached the download to the install guide. I also updated the install guide to explain that the download is for my newest settings and current configuration. I mislead Sims in the download thread by saying the settings should be the same as the install guide. oops, I forgot I had newer settings. Anyway I think it is cleared up in the guide.
  16. Trying to put back the pics in the MSnS sticky again and this time the software won't let me have more than four pics linked. Doesn't matter to me, but interesting. I just put hyper links to the rest.
