  1. well it depends. what class are you running in, this will limit your mods...sooo....if you were to do a basic rebuild then i'd get new rings, bearings, timing chain kit, all new seals, and have your block checked and also a valve job. courtesy nissan has some good nissan parts, there is motorsport auto, black dragon, the classifieds on this site can be helpful, and there are also lots of small sites dedicated to z products, and some good stuff on ebay too!
  2. how much oil did you put in each cylinder, that makes a difference too, but the fact that they all went up the same amount is good.
  3. just doing it to do it huh? neat. i'll have to tell the guys at work about it.
  4. thats the classic compression test to see if rings are bad. if the compression goes up then the rings are typically worn. if it doesn't then its usually a prob with the head. looks like you need some rings bro.
  5. cool, thanks tony, i meant stock as in the 280zx system, thats why i was looking at the 300zx so i wouldn't have to do the megasquirt, which i may go anyway. still not sure. i'm using 370cc injectors by the way.
  6. can't wait to see the video. whats your setup?
  7. ditto on what tony said, i think my 77 and 82 both have the telescoping style...makes taking the intake manifold off easier too because you can just slip it all the way out.
  8. roughly 300 to the wheels, or close to it, i just don't want to be at the limits of the stock system. i have an 83 harness and turbo dizzy. so it seemed like a possible option after reading afshin's sticky on it.
  9. well, i was planning on using the set of SVO injectors i have and maybe a hipo T3 from speed shop thagard if it will get me to around 300...
  10. does anyone have any dyno numbers to show how much HP a Z31 ECU/MAF/CAS swap is capable of supporting using the L28et? i'd thought about it as an option for my turbo swap and it seems easy enough. thanks, Steve-O
  11. yes tim, you are right, the clearances are tighter when cold. although almost every time i have adjusted them cold they have been too loose when it got warm, so i have started with the .007 and .009 instead of .008 and .010 settings. seems to make just the right amount of noise.
  12. wow, i wish i had that much in my bank account right now, lol, jk, it looks terrific, i hope mine is half as fast as that one will be when i'm done. great job man!
  13. i'm pretty sure i was told the WM car in real life was a tripple blow through setup.
  14. hey OTM, i had the same prob with my MN47 on the rear exhaust stud. i went to sears and bought some of the tiny cobalt coated bits and kept drilling at the stud around the ez out until i was able to hit it with a chisle and grab it with needle nose, then just drilled out the rest of the stud and installed a 10MMx1.25. lots of cussing involved, don't kid yourself, but only spent about $12. machine shop wouldn't even look at it when i called them.
  15. anyone got a link to the SSautochrome Ebay store, can't find it using search or anything, weird.
  16. yeah me and my friend Justin saw your tire lift on one of the runs, freaking sweet man! hopefully my ACT clutch will be installed by next month and i can run, my stocker slips so bad, if i had to guess i'd say its the original, or a cheap replacement.
  17. i resurfaced them, just enough to get the little edges off of them at the wear pattern. i'm not having any wear issues on the lobes or rocker pads. its looking like 150, maybe motorsport can get that size, someone said recently that they were out of some sizes and would have to get bigger ones and machine them down. i'm not down with that. lol.
  18. ok, set the sprocket to #1, even though i have some chain stretch, and adjusted the valves to 10 and 12 instead of 8 and 10, this moved my wipe patern slightly towards the middle (good) but i still have them close to the edge, after playing with some clipped off pieces of feeler guage, it looks like the .150 pads should be ideal. maybe i can still get them from nissan. still working on the vac advance. i noticed that with the lower vacuum in the manifold that i'm running a few more PSI fuel pressure at idle, nice. also this moved my idle up some and seems smoother but, but it could just be me.
  19. ok here goes, a friend and I installed a comp cams 268 duration cam in my car yesterday, was told by comp cams it was a 420 lift, with stock lash pads i have about 2 mm left on the lifter side of the rocker arm pad on all of the rockers, so i know i will need to get some slightly thicker ones to center it, but it does run. its a lot more lopey than i thought it would be for such a mild cam. 110 degree separation. anyway, around 600-700 rpm, idling, i'm having what sounds like knock around the #3 and #4 cylinder area. when i first let off the throttle after break in, it idled at around 500 rpm, before the cam it was closer to 900 rpms. the cam sprocket is at the #3 setting, where it was with the stock cam. my timing was 14 initial. i have the 240sx tb and adjusted idle up to about 900-1000. it ran smoother with the timing set at 18 initial so i left it there, don't have but a basic timing light so i cant check total advance . i also have headers and full 2.5 mandrel exhaust, and cold air intake. car is bone stock internally other than the new cam. one other prob is i am running the zx dizzy with E12-80 module, new everything, fully rebuilt, including a fairly new vac advance from MSA. with the vac advance plugged in it will rev up on its on and stay around 2000 plus RPMs, or more, sometimes it won't do it till the first time you rev it, then it'll stay high. any ideas about the vac advance? what about the knock? thanks guys. PS, probably gonna put the cam on the #1 setting today. edit: wouldn't hurt to say this is a 77 280z 4 speed, stock 3.54 gearing.
  20. wow Tim, didn't know i was so on the money with my guess there, lol! thanks for the link, learned a lot from it. very good reading.
  21. timz, is that a custom exhaust manifold or what, it looks like the euro manifold welded together without the bellows? just curious.
