  1. me and gearheadstik got the TB mounting plate installed yesterday, he's a damn fine welder! gotta do the injector bungs next time!
  2. if the wrong gear was in the transmission he could have thought he was doing 160 on the speedo. for instance...if you were running a 4.11 by chance and had a cog in there for a 3.36 rear end you might be doing 130 but your speedo would say closer to 156. also tire size can throw you off a bit. i have heard of people "back in the day" throwing a 240z head on a 260z or 280z short block but not vice versa.
  3. i'll try to answer some of the questions for you. the duct taped thing looks like a potentiometer. its a variable resistance device that appears to be wired into your coolant temp sensor making the ECM think the vehicle is colder than it actually is, therefore dumping more fuel in. probably not the best thing in the world for a stock motor. the headers although square port will probably seal on that round port head, if the flange is straight. i assume by the engine bay that its a 77 or 78 and that you have a stock N47 head. and if a loud exhaust bothers you, i'd leave them off and just get a nice MSA manifold-back system or used the headers with a cat and a muffler. also, yes your air box is a little rusty but not as bad as the sheet metal next to it. i'd take care of that. will probably need a new core support from a donor or something fabricated in. first gen z's aren't the best at keeping fumes out. but new tail light gaskets, new rear hatch seal(if needed) and any rust holes around the rear area will need to be addressed first.
  4. well the runners are a bigger diameter...so maybe it'll help out in the rpm band somewhere. the one i'm building i just bought the injector bungs off of ebay for $24. and gonna use the square throttle body pad from the 240sx SOHC intake manifold. and the most important thing is it looks cool!
  5. i definitely recommend the $20 thermostat turn on switch from o'reilly auto parts to go with the fan. i have a stock 280zx rad in my 77 and with a 14" fan they work great. one day i'll put a shiny aluminum one in there but thats later. gotta get this turbo set up in time for DNI!!!! almost done...
  6. wizard black- lay the sandpaper on a nice flat table and drag with an even pressure the length of the pad surface. its not hard and nowhere close to a u shaped rocker. helps if you keep count of the strokes on each one.
  7. i resurfaced mine starting with 320 grit sandpaper, then 600, then 1000, just to make sure, didn't really take much material off, just made sure there wasn't a lip at the edges. they are looking good after about 7K on the cam.
  8. sorry this thread is kinda old but i was gonna ask if anyone knows if the mechanical speedo sender for the z works in the 240sx transmission so i can keep my stock speedo?? it looks like it fits in there but dunno if everything meshes correctly yet..
  9. being a nissan tech i will tell you we have one in for a headgasket at least once a week and we are a smallish dealership. crank sensors suck. throttle chambers aren't the greatest, if you keep the factory front cat. setup expect it to eventually revert a "dust" back into the engine and eat rings, mainly on 02-03 models, expect a headgasket every 60Kish. some will have better luck, but most won't. sorry, this is just my 5 day a week experience with this motor.
  10. i was about to ask if anyone else noticed he is compressing air through the AFM instead of drawing it through?? whats up with that? guess it wouldn't matter if it really was gutted...
  11. this might help some, there may be some variances in colors but this is what i have found so far. yellow 16 = 3.36, black 17 = 3.54, turquoise 18 = 3.70, white 19 = 3.90, red 20 = 4.11, purple 21 = 4.38. i have also heard of 4.4? ratios, maybe there is a cog for that one but it wouldn't coincide with the proportion of teeth:ratio. anyway, someone who is more familiar to chime in would be great, thats just what i've seen SO FAR.
  12. that trans looks like my 4 speed with that plate on top of it. and a yellow 16 tooth cog would specify a 3.36 ratio, not 3.7.
  13. well the other difference is that in 81 the injector resistors were built into the harness and in 82-83 they were built into the ECM, so that is also a big difference.
  14. the easiest way i've found to install a tranny is to turn the bellhousing clockwise so that the starter housing part of it is pointing more downward than natural and get it away from the trans tunnel. once it slides in somewhat rotate it back up into position. easy as pie! and yes the springs on the disc do face outward towards the pressure plate/transmission but they are usually marked anyway.
  15. fave 5...IR 2135 Ti impact, stinger flashlight (recharge baby!), 40 oz snap on dead blow, pocket knife, and PB blaster. anything else is specialty, hehe
  16. maybe this is in the right section...on my turbo swap i'm using all 82-83 stock controls. i need an ECM. i found one with the number A18-000-040. is there any way to tell if that is an 81 ECM or an 82-83 ECM? i'd really appreciate the help guys!
  17. hey guys, i'm looking at an ECM for my 280zx turbo. its an 83 model and the ECM i'm looking at has this number- A18-000-040. does anyone know what year that is for and if it will work for my car. its a manual trans. dunno if maybe you guys might have that number on one of yours. thanks! and i did search but no luck for that number.
  18. :grin:well i found the adapter size i needed (16mmx1.5 to -10AN for the RX7 cooler) and then 3/8thNPT to -10AN for the oil filter sandwich plate. should be a sweet setup!!!
  19. i have heard of the stock zxt tranny slipping at about 10psi. i'm sure that depends on mileage of the trans and what not but can't help you with the parts part of the question.
  20. looks good, i checked out some on ebay last night, most going for a pretty affordable price!
  21. well i found that the fittings are the same size as the current nissan oil filter threaded nipples. so now i have to figure out what size that is. the oil cooler is gonna be mounted at the bottom of the intercooler, i'll get pics up soon.
  22. well i just picked up an RX7 first gen oil cooler off of an 80 model. looks good, gonna clean it up, does anyone know what size the fittings are for it? Tony D?
  23. i did that same upgrade a few months ago with my P90A and the only thing i was concerned with was the slight edge of the oiling hole exposed on some of the lifters. so i let a little JB weld drip down in there(just a few drops but not enough to go far enough to plug the oil galley, and then reinserted the solid lifters and timeserts. dunno if i'm going with stock cam or not but i know the P90a cam has a different lift and slope patern or something (don't know a lot about cams but there is something different) compared to the solid lifter P90 cam.
  24. yeah it would but not much, she already lets me spend a good deal on it. a lot of my parts are not yet on it, lol
