  1. and its something you've thought about a zillion times over the years. And it probably won't be that hard to do, but hard enough to keep it from being even feasible for so many. Not because it is beyond anyone, but because it is just really so low priority when compared to the cost. But the bloody thing just sits there under those hoods, with so many of them hardly even touched.....
  2. Lets see, the carpeting is nice, the power windows.... Shes a pretty one to be sure. His car is really one of the comfiest looking Z's I have had the honor to see in person, and shes PRETTY to boot. (Wiring, of course, can be ignored until it gets tucked... right Derek?? )
  3. DUDE that SO needs "Ride of the Valkyries" playing in the background.... "I love the smell of lithium Ions in the morning!!!"
  4. Every single car that is truly worth it does..... "Datula"
  5. Where the heck did they come up with that name, anyhow??? "Festoon..." that one has always had me puzzled.....
  6. +1... Went to the junkyard today, just browsing, and I couldn't pass a single Mercedes without thinking about it.. and who am I kidding I looked under most of the hoods, too.
  7. http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=135748&highlight=efi+bible+step as for specific guesses, I would be wondering about the Throttle Position Switch (not a sensor, this switch ahs three positions: idle, cruise, and WOT, and between them they each occupy roughly 1/3 of the throttle travel) or the Thermotime Switch. As for your AFR reading... 32 would be stupid lean, something seems out of whack there, and AFRs aren't the tree to start barking up to solve this problem. What do your spark plugs look like? Fouled out with too much fuel, or what?
  8. That door sure looks (relatively) fine I'm 29, and I was born into riding in my dad's 240Z, and grew up hating on the ZXs... but I can't maintain that conviction. In my head, there are now simply, five different Z-cars. The S30 is the only one thats "a REAL Z-car" in my head, but I roll my eyes at myself every time I make the distinction. To be brutally honest, an NA Z31 in the fully dressed trim (ie, picture an 86 2-seater) in SOME ways looks more like a modernized 1970 240Z than even a 78 280Z. The fact is, we were never given a clear cut on what our car even IS. "Do you prefer Firebirds or Camaros?" We don't even get such clear-cut duplicity as THAT. To say "One is Good and the other is so dissimilar It is Bad" is to compare an Alfa-Romeo to an RX-7. (side note: my dad had an alfa like this before i was born, and then a mazda like this about eight years ago. cool huh?)
  9. I believe "Holy Smokes" might be the most appropriate thing to say...
  10. Fire extinguisher. Tire repair kit and a ten dollar air pump form wal-mart. If you are super spunky, some wire, an inline fuse, a relay and a switch. (never know when the ol' fuel pump power supply might go out. We all know it happens on these FI cars occasionally.) Rope? (I always at least consider rope when making a list like this, it comes from the books I've read.) a 12 volt spotlight might be helpful as well. These are all suggestions, really, I know you are limited on space and can't bring the whole world. PB Blaster/WD-40/Sea Foam Deep Creep.. but its your car, you might not NEED that, you know best. A gallon of gas in a can might not be a bad idea either... but like I said, if something occurs to me I'm not shooting it down, I'm just giving you suggestions.
  11. Wow... just getting hooked now, but any S30 fan should see some familiarity in the rear fenderline and also somewhat in the "butt cheek" of the car... (This is a '62 Corvette in the picture...)
  12. It goes without saying that there is an undercurrent of tension regarding the entire concept of finding a DOHC/crossflow head for an L6; causes include the extreme rarity of (and accompanying disinformation regarding) the two existing "non-standard" heads for the engine (LY and OS-G), the misinformation regarding the original connection between the L6 and its Mercedes "ancestors;" and the confusion regarding Brian's franKAstein head are three decent causes to point at. The only animosity/correction that was made, was regarding the statement that was made that (when blown out of proportion for purposes of illustration; I haven't even gone back to re-check who originally made the comment b/c it doesn't matter) implied that the ENTIRE Z-CAR COMMUNITY had determined that NO other existing DOHC I-6 head would fit on the Z motor. Just a slip of the tongue. (keyboard) Now, can we go back to playing half-breed Axis Power Plants?!?!?!?! Its SUPER fun!!!
  13. hardly abuse... it was a cheap kit that had been trashed and was resurrected by my father for reasons beyond my comprehension. Still, I guess it WAS a G-nosed Z; can't blame him for taking the opportunity to cross that one off of the "Cars To Drive" list.
  14. You aren't "causing" any animosity; this is a subject that has been open to a great deal of speculation and BSing, so you have to understand you are treading water in a sensitive area.. Tony was clarifying his statement from earlier, and his last post was directed against the forces of Vagueness and Imprecise Language everywhere. Clear, honest, factual communication is the only method humans have of transferring ideas from one to another, and the members of this forum try to have utmost respect for that. That being the case, TonyD could NOT let such a huge blanket statement as "how did we all let this escape our notice for so long?!?!" slip by him, nor can I blame him. My reaction to reading that was "Speak for yourself!! I haven't ruled out anything I haven't seen on a block, and that ain't anything!" Semantics are NOT trivial!!
  15. Heh, that was a weekend spray job with paint mixed from the ends of eight jobs a friend had done... The smilie was to ensure the paint job didnt stay TOO long. It was only really even sprayed to show up problems with the paint; this car was in primer for like ten, twelve years, hence the name Grey Ghost.
  16. It might not quite be what you had in mind, but here is something to help you picture the car with no windows at all My dad's old '70 car, "The Grey Ghost," backyard drip rail shave and full interior strip including all windows and chrome. this thing was a no-rules-attended, parking lot club racer that had very little wisdom and a whole metric ton of fun
  17. double post, mis-categorized, possible spam?
  18. Not that simple... but not awfully complex. the bumpers are totally, 100% different from bar to mount through to where they mount into the car Decorative flimsy chrome things versus heavy impact bumpers. (the 75s were BRUTAL guys..) google xenons30 and you will find a site that will provide you with at least SOME of the 75 FSM in PDF; it is about all I have found yet. I am pretty sure he took my zip file of wiring schematics I have collected from The Internet for a 75 and posted it there as well. FYI, the 75, 76, 77 and 78 280Z all had significant differences in nitty-gritty details, and 75 is the least developed (but also simpler) layout so alot of later literature would not apply to your hardware. I also own a 75 if you hadn't gathered yet. Props to you for picking up this EFI on your own; its great to see new users pick up the books and ask informed questions. One last piece of advice I will give you is that it NEVER hurts to read through the theory section of the EFI bible fifteen thousand extra times, and alot of the testing procedures are good to re read as well... OUTSIDE of a garage setting, just for mental review's sake. The system is simple enough that anyone is capable of grokking it in fullness, if the dedication, attention, and observation is there.
  19. Ka-ching!!!! http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?p=965695 A little bit of reading on how the SU carburetors work and you will be amazed at how well a car can run on a pair of sideways toilet tank carburetors. There is a super-cool feeling involved in getting those two carbs feeding the engine the right gas... it is integral to the Z experience to me. But I'm waxing philosophical, which usually means they've let me stay out too late........
  20. someone earlier asked if the plastic spray caps on the injectors were intact. If the injector tips aren't right, the fuel will have more of a dribble action than a spray action, difficult ignition, problems across the board. You need to read the plugs, and I would replace the AFM with a known good one if it is at all possible. Anyone anywhere near you that can help you out?? It would be perfect if you could find someone with a stock electronics L28ET in your region that wanted to help you out. If you can throw in a known good one and it works, you know you need an AFM; if the known good one doesn't work, then you try putting yours onto the other car (if the guy's super nice. Obviously this is an ideal situation) Could you have a bad fuel pressure regulator or a clogged return line? Maybe even a bad vacuum line to the FPR...
  21. Wow, you got me hooked! I can't say that there is a single I-6 cylinder head I have looked at in the junkyard without thinking "Gee, I wonder.... Bah, I'll never have the opportunity to even think about it."
  22. I simply freaking love inline six cylinder engines. Alfas, Ferraris, BMWs, Nissans, Jeep, the Ford truck motor, my buddy had some 240cid (?) in an old dodge pickup, whatever.. they just *feel* right.
