  1. Hmm - well - I'm 57 and retirement isn't that far away. At this point I have a healthy 401K at work and significant investments through a broker. My house and cars are paid for so I have no debt. I looked at what I had last week at realized I could last 16 years on what I have now without changing my lifestyle or earning another dollar. Oh yeah - I forgot to mention that I'll be pulling in Navy retirement in a few years which not only adds monthly income but covers medical. It's been a slow, methodical plan.
  2. You can also do a search online with salvage yards naationally. Some of them are free and some may cost $4-5 to do the search. Personnally I'd rather develop a realationship with a local salvage yard that generally has a lot of GM products and stay tight with them until either they get one in or locate one you can see before you buy. Best if you can get the "works" when you do it. The more you get at the same time the better the deal will be. Mine actually worked out very reasonably because the guy that did my conversion had a Z28 with 3,500 miles on it that had been sitting in his yard for 5 years waiting to be used as a donor for a Jaguar. No Jag owners bit so I got a good deal - and everone else got the resulting Johns Cars components.
  3. DAT240Z - I caught that edit on your post! OK - now you have many more tires to choose from but the eralier advice I gave still holds.
  4. Go to www.tirerack.com . They have a function that will allow you to compare the tires for about a dozen different features. You might also see if the Discount site has a similar function. Then you'd have more information and maybe the question could be a bit more specific. By the way - the 225/50-14 tire is a very limited availability size.
  5. I test drove a 1969 Mustang with the 428 Cobrajet in it in early 1970. Other than it being a bit of a tight fit for me at 6'-4" the most significant memory I have of the car was it walking sideways in 3rd gear when I punched it at 50 mph merging onto the highway. Scared the crap out of my girlfriend. I ended up buying a slightly tamer 340 'Cuda. I'd loe to have either of those cars now. Ify ou're thinking of putting it in a daily driver don't forget it was not a fuel miser - even by 1970 standards.
  6. Are you sure it has a 5-spd? The 5-spd didn't even become an option until 1977. If it does you need to determine which 5-spd it is. The R200 might indicate the transmission model depending on if it's a 3.54:1 or a 3.90:1.
  7. Adjustable or non-adjustable ok? www.racetep.com has some decent non-adjustable.
  8. So today my wife gets this one. I forwarded it to: abuse@bankofamerica.com and they replied promptly indicating that it is an identity theft scam. I had a similar one a few months ago about my AT&T internet account. Can't trust anything anymore. 9. I'm not getting them either - plus I'm having to repeatedly log in if I decide to post after originally logging in and then sometimes my post is getting deleted in the process. Maybe it's time for a donation again?
  10. I replied to his email stating that I appreciated his offer but was unable to take him up onit at this time. I had however forwarded it to th eUS Secret Service as I understood that they were very interested in offers of his type. THat should take that particular scam off for now.

Russ - I almost feel slighted on Steve's part. What about his US spec 1977 280Z that is getting an LS1/T56 along with a full Arizona Z suspension and eventually power steering? Y'all on Hybridz need to drop in on zclub.net periodically and check these guys out. what they are dong with their cars is truly phenomenal.
  12. Larry, does your truck scale allow you to get front/rear weights? I used the one where I work and got the following. Before I started my conversion my 280Z weighed an even 2,800 lbs, 1,400 lbs on each end. When I completed the LS1/T56 install it was 2,830 lbs., 1400 on the nose and 1430 on the tail with 3/4 tank of gas in each case. Since adding the rollbar, strut tower braces and doing a full interior and sound system upgrade the car now weighs an even 3,000 lbs with a full tank of gas - 1440 on the nose and 1560 on the tail.
  13. I did the Modern Motorsports 240SX/300ZX conversion on the rear. It did not affect my wheel position at all. The other question you should be asking is what affect does it have on wheel diameter? Some of these kits will allow you to use a 15" wheel while others will require incresing it to 16" or larger.
  14. I'm with you Mike. Sounds like an afternoon or night at Texas Motorplex in Ennis could be in order! Terry, Beautiful car - absolutely beautiful! HybridZ probably could have a lot more cars on Zcar.com if we'd just submit. My 280 has been on twice and my wifes Z32 convertible once - pretty much just because I submitted them. If you've got a nice looking car - or can take photos that make it nice looking - then send them in with a write up and you've probably got at least a 50/50 chance.
  15. I know Center Line isn't everyone's favorite but so far mine have performed well and were a good deal when I got my 16x7's several years ago. The new forged wheels they have out a much better but also more expensive. Generally $$$ talk. If you can find a wheel in a width and the offset that you like and they offer another one with the right bolt pattern then I'd call them and see what a "custom" set would cost. Mike - what tires are you planning on running on the 16x8's? Heard from Gary McPhail lately?
  16. Good Lord - am I on some kind of "sucker list"?!?!?!?! 17. A while back my kids bought me a Hurst shifter for my '99 T56. It definitely shifts better than the stock GM unit and is built much better. There was an item of interest encountered on the install that would normally not be. I ended up not using the shift lever that comes with the Hurst unit because it placed the shift ball about 5" closer to the firewall than where my modified Z shift lever was on the stock T56 unit. It turns out that the two bolts that hold the shift lever on have a slightly different centerline distance. Not a big deal but it required slotting the holes in the Z shifter a bit to fit on the Hurst unit vs the GM unit. To further explain. My T56 shifter is actually located about 1/2" closer to the firewall than the original Datsun T5. I had a tab welded on the firewall side of my Datsun shift lever that moved the entire lever back about an inch and tilted it back a bit further so that it was perfectly located for me in my ideal seating position. I was tired of coming up short occaissionally on the 2-3 shift and certainly didn't want to be doing that on a much more expensive T56 at higher RPM's and loads. The setback and slight angle, combined with the stock bend in the Datsun lever put the shift ball about 5" closer than the perfectly straight Hurst lever.
  18. My 0-60 mph time on street tires - best run - is 4.7 seconds. That is with a 2,900 lb car and a 3.70:1 R200 LSD.
  19. Naw - that's the LT1. It just seemed interesting that Gm had chosen LS7 as the designation for the new 7.0 liter Z06 Motor - or could it be that the designations make absolutely no sense at all - hmm - that would be consistent - in a GM sort of way.
  20. Hmm - since an LS-7 is a 7.0 liter motor I guess this would be an LS8.2?
  21. I have never taken my Z over 3,000 RPM in 6th gear (6,000 in 4th). It's still solid there but the car is 29 years old and I didn't get to be as old as I am by risking flight in a non-airworthy vehicle.
  22. Obviously there must be some significant difference between the 240 and the 280 tanks. I was encountering fuel starvation accellerating out of hard low speed turns when my 280 tank dropped into the 4-5 gallons remaining range. I got my first hint of it when I was at about the 3/8 full mark which, on my car, would be about 6 gallons remaining.
  23. Need to 'search' this site then. There is a current thread on a Vintage Air AC installation in a 240Z. I would think, however, that living in Lucille you'd be spending more time thinking about studded snow tires than AC? I'll bet you do have some sweet roads to run in that area.
  24. Looks like it incorporates 'heel-and-toe' braking too!
  25. Heck - you could probably take a pound off it by machining off the advertising that's cast into it.
