  1. My reference was the DIY garage owner from "Christine"...

     

     

    That guy was not very far off from the guys I learned a lot from...guys who maybe completed the 4th grade, stormed the beaches in the Pacific (several times) and when it was all over they started back at the garage where they were working before the war.

     

    In 40 years, they watched huge advancements in the Automobile, and really had no time in their life to waste on those they didn't feel were serious.

     

    Curiously, while stationed in Japan in the 80's I got the same thing from veterans of the "other side" who had a less abrasive, but no more aloof personality. But squatting for hours a day watching amazed as a one-eyed man turned a flat piece of sheet metal into a door skin for a, S30 using nothing more than anvil and hammer engaged me in awe...and eventually in similar fashion a tool was offered, or a gesture given to fetch something....something if I had been paying attention would be obviously needed at that point.

     

    You either got it right, or you didn't. And if you didn't, you were JUDGED not worthy to waste their time.

     

    And that's what most of the backlash comes from, a sense of entitlement and being judged when they've been told forever they are special. Super. A Star. To guys that have seen enough to know otherwise, you gotta prove yourself worthy of putting the effort into...

     

    Most kids really resent that.

     

    Even the most scurvy bastard out there sees potential, and will make a way for you to learn. But don't EXPECT him to do it!

     

    Then again, most kids today couldn't cope with a slightly all-too-real portrayal of Shop Class in the 70's and 80's... I can think of a few shop incidents where the teacher reigned in those "not bound for college track kids" as in the clip below....aaaaah yes a different time indeed!

     

  2. Who waits? I watch it on what formerly was "Discovery Turbo" now they changed the name of the channel to something like "Maxx"--it's on all the time there, syndicated stuff through the week and the newest episode entering rotation at 21:00 every Thursday night.

     

    Between Maxx Channel, and The Balls Channel, I find little need to watch much else when home idle! The only bummer is to catch The Simpsons, I gotta be up at Midnight as it's such an adult show it's on late...

  3. ... Wow, so many assumptions that I'm clueless. I don't know if I should respond or talk to the moderators abotu whether it is acceptable to assume someone is an idiot here...

    I'll save you some time: it is. The assumption is usually proven false, or true based on the comments following. The persons so offended usually dig their own graves in terms of reinforcing their own inexperience, or idiocy as the case warrants.

     

    Did you read the forum rules and understand the philosophy about the site in regards to basic maintenance questions?

     

    From what you put in the OP the first, obvious thing that jumps to mind is you got oil all over the thing and it's burning off... Maybe coolant. Common sense says if a cast iron object is giving off smoke, there's something on it that's burning off... What that is, would need to be determined, and the source eliminated.

     

    Then again taking the car for the standard 30 minute road test might reveal that the "smoking" has stopped... If it hasn't then the obvious conclusion is something is leaking...and you look to see what it was.

     

    Metals don't smoke when hot unless contaminated. If they do, find the contaminant source and stop it, and the smoking will stop.

     

    Idling the engine will not necessarily remove all residues in a short time, or a long time... All depends on what the contaminant was, and the base constituent parts burn-off point.

  4. I am getting a ton of conflicting opinions on Schneider vs. Isky vs. Webcams and also tons of conflicting opinions on regrinds versus new billets.. 

     

    What's your opinion on all of this, and how is that cam holding up thus far? I'm looking for a grind very similar to the one you used.

    Without Data to back it up, discard the "opinion"...

     

    I believe it was W. Edwards Deming that said "Without data, you're just another person with an opinion."

  5. Well, then if you consider this exchange "jumping down your throat" or "witch hunt" I pity you indeed in this harsh world.

     

    But, OK, then you should appreciate that the point you jumped down his throat about "wanting proof" when it was simply right there for a 0.03 second search result. It is patently obvious that a 550 pound engine would indeed weigh 950 with that out drive unit on it...and someone familiar with them would know that number to be correct. This isn't the engine weights thread, is it?

     

    With this obvious in my mind, I chose to simply correct the obvious error of stating two strokes were valveless...that engine, BTW, is not "piston ported"... So indeed it dies have valves. If you want to continue semantics...feel free.

     

    He should have said 550, not 950. But then again, both are good numbers for someone shipping one depending on how you are buying it... Those auctions simply say "shipping weight, 950 lbs" without looking into it further, you could mistake it for the engine and not the out drive set. Then again, maybe he was on his phone, hit a bump, and "550" became "950"?

     

    Really no reason to jump down his throat with that kind of response, demanding proof and aggressively asserting justification of your position by examples of omitted components!

     

    Or is it just OK to "jump down people's throats" when MAG58 does it over easily searched hard data, but nobody else?

     

    Or did you miss that point entirely in the first....oh, what am I saying, OF COURSE YOU MISSED IT!!!

  6. That's the purpose of the post. I was going to list it for sale as a stock Nissan turbo cam but I don't know how to describe the cam. It's in good condition and could be run "as is" if it's a turbo cam. If it's N/A i'll keep it for a re-grind core. Thanks for the input.

    Why do you think the "turbo cam" is no good for a core?

     

    It's a "Stock Nissan Cam, it has a "B" on the back. External Oiling. Would make a perfect regrind core."

     

    There's your description. Supposition gets you nothing but heartache if you're found out to be wrong.

  7. Not really, just trying to jump over the stupidity of not being able to put in the requisite search term to find in 0.03 seconds that

    The obvious typographical brain fart was stating "without" instead of "WITH" outboard drive arrangement attached... The transmission was heavy gears and metal, and substantial...unlike the diecast cases...

     

    Not all two-strokes are valveless.... The weight thing was a pissing contest easily answered with a quick search. The contention that two stroke automatically eliminates a valvetrain is foolish, and uninformed.

  8. Oh, sounds like you have the same engine I do in my 73, bought from an automatic transmission 1977 Nissan Cedric Corporate Limo. No injector reliefs, carb bolt spacing, external oiled cam. Cam worked great in my turbocharged application for years till I got a true turbo cam.

     

    But my crank fit a standard Nissan Pilot Bearing, bought from Naha Prince Motor Co. in 1985...

     

    The downfall of the North Americentric publications is they think that because it existed there, it existed everywhere and that's that. Like it was designed and produced in North America. It wasn't. And North Americans are generally clueless on what the rest of the world got, and what existed in Japan in terms of manufacturing and production...the best they can do is guess in most instances, and rely on heresay and gossip.

     

    Like one US 'Expert' stating "it was one of the original metal G-Noses".... Love ya man...but you haven't a CLUE what you're talking about!

     

    Camshafts are odd bugs, the much vaunted "428 CJ" cam was a standard truck grind with a 4 degree offset dowel in it and a paint stripe put on it in manufacturing to designate the application-specific dowel. I don't know what the hangup is on it....degree it and see what it is if it's that important. Knowing 'application' gives you what?

     

    What good is a stock camshaft, other than as a core? Seriously! What? Send it to the grinder and get what you need made. Swapping stock cams is an exercise in futility IMO... for the effort expended get it reground to something GOOD and not a compromise grind achieved through consensus and approved by legal.

  9. Devcon Aluminum or Ceramic Putty after degreasing and media blasting to give proper surface profile.

     

    If you don't want to buy another front cover, Devcon saves all. Check out their site on Centrifugal Water Pump Repair Slurry or simply Aluminum Putty. It's machine workable... I watched their Titanium Putty eat up carbide burrs... It's used in general industry all the time...

    Originally the post was "drop-in" and Patton's adapters fit the bill, in addition to being low pressure....GM TBI designed to be a step towards EFI utilizing existing legacy fuel components like hoses and wet flow manifolds.

     

    It seems the closest thing to "drop-in" IMO.

     

    They work great, Andrew Jennings drove from BC to Vegas for T he Meeting on ZBastardZ this past summer...SU Vapor Lock Weather, and using a PL510 with Z SUs usually isn't that great of a swap. But with Patton's adapters (especially considering the costs!) it was a successful journey.

  12. I got into a conversation with Don at MSA after someone came up to him asking if he could recurve his distributor and he blurted out "$400" and the guy walked off. Don went back to his ongoing conversation and my "Was that rebushing, or using ball bearings on the shaft?" follow up to the other guy's blowoff that got about a 45 minute discussion on cutting the weights and polishing ramps, spring selection, etc... Comparing and contrasting my VW and Corvair background with his Datsun Wizardlyness was a big learning experience as I wasn't really "Mr. Watercooled" having only been building on them in Japan for the prior 5 years...and only had about 20 years of automotive background at the time.

     

    People now with the instant gratification syndrome don't understand, unless you really do have a 164 IQ, you won't pick this stuff up on the internet in a year. It takes time. Some things you can read, but other things you have to experience.

     

    I know guys who rode a desk for 30+ years and still can't fathom WHY the calculations didn't work out in the real world. Don took pains to tell you why it didn't work like that....in a uniquely "DON" way, too!  :D

  13. Whackin' Stick is also used on people who don't read their Ford Owner's Manual and pump the accelerator to the floor with the key on, before cranking it....putting it in "flood clear" and repeat it until the battery is dead...

     

    I got that one called into me and was embarrassed explaining it doesn't work like that any more.... and hasn't for some time!

     

    What can you say, everything sucks but Matlock and I still wear an onion on my belt while taking the walking bird out for evening constitutional!

  15. how do you use a n/a dizzy for a turbo set up? can it be done if you go aftermarket ECU like MegaSquirt?

    On the 81 engines with a Crank-Mounted CAS, the distributor drive is identical to the N/A since they are only distributing the spark and a jitter of 10-15 degrees won't mean anything.

     

    On the 82/83 CAS mounted in the distributor, the standard N/A Dizzy Drive is too sloppy, so the spline was used to basically limit slop to a couple of degrees from spline slop and drive gear engagement backlash.

     

    Any 81 L28ET will run if you stick the N/A Dizzy in it. Remember the ECCS handled spark timing calculations, which didn't impact fueling. Fueling was based on the pickup of the coil firing and tripping the injectors every third spark event. Really the 82/83's will work the same way...but driving that N/A dizzy is somewhat of a pain.

     

    It's why you get no fuel when your Ignitor... No spark, no input to trigger the injectors.
