  1. Found a guy on craigslist and was able to get a head bolt. I cleaned the surfaces up a bit and switched the head gasket. All the snapped head bolt took was a swift blow with a hammer and a pair of pliers and it came out. Cranked it over and didn't notice any white smoke this time after revving it up a little. I got to finish putting the exhaust manifold back on and a few other things and I think it should be good to go. After it was all said and done, I have to admit it was a bit of a pain in the ass
  2. Wouldn't ya know it, I go to the junk yard today and there is only one Z with no engine in it. Sometimes I just don't have the best of luck. I guess it's time to start callig around.
  3. Yeah I know haha. When I felt it snap I just sighed and envisioned myself drilling it out and going through that drama. A couple threads were stuck in the head so I had to get a pry bar and man handle it a little bit
  4. So, I pulled the head off after what turned into somewhat of a headache and noticed that I do indeed have a blown head gasket. Good news is that everything else seems to be ok. I snapped a head bolt in the process so I have to go to the junk yard and wrench one out tomorrow morning. Got my hands on a felpro gasket for under $20 today which is nice. Its not the RB25 swap yet, but i need to collect a few parts and put aside some time to get that done. I was hoping to get the L24 cranking so I can use the Z to get around for the time being. Work continues... Work begins Headless Problem area
  5. Pulled the head and snapped one of the head bolts in the process. Luckily there is enough of it sticking out for me to get some vise grips on it and get that sucker out of there. Everything looks to be fine, the head gasket was indeed blown right next to the number six cylinder. I believe a new head gasket ($17.99), head bolt ($2 lifted from junk yard), oil filter, and oil change are in order. Not too bad.
  6. I pulled out the plugs to do a compression check and the number six cylinder is leaking coolant out of the spark plug hole. None of the others are doing this. Would that indicate that number six is the bad cylinder?
  7. Thanks for the comments guys. I won't be able to do the swap for a few weeks because of prior commitments so I figured I would try to get the stocker L24 going. Turns out I needed to get a new starter because the one that was in it had seized up. After changing the starter with a new one, I go to start it and she cranks over. Problem is I just couldn't get it to start. I glance over at the fuel gauge and it says empty. Duh! So I go get some gas and fill it up. She fires right up but is blowing a lot of white smoke out of the exhaust. I figured what the hey, it's been sitting around for a while maybe it just needs a good run around the block. The white smoke persists, so I may have a blown head gasket on my hands. Might be high time for the swap after all.
  8. I checked the coolant level and it was very low. I was so excited that it started that I forgot to check. I filled it up but am not sure if its a good idea to start it again or not.
  9. Ok, got it to start and idle. Took it around the block and it is belching out a lot of white smoke from the exhaust. It was a lot of white smoke. The car has been sitting for a long time I heard without being started. What do you guys think?
  10. I went to test the starter and it was bad. So i got a new one and hooked it up. When I went to turn the key it clicked once then the battery appears to be dead. Maybe hooked up the solenoid incorrectly?
  11. Engine does move when I rock the car back and forth in 5th (5 speed swap by the way). So I will have to take a look at the starter then. Thanks for the guidance.
  12. I have a 1972 240z with a stock L24 that will not crank over. I'm going to be doing an RB25 swap into it soon but I am kind of busy at the moment so I won't be able to do the swap for another week or two. I thought it would be cool to try and get it running because it looks great and a lot of friends and family would like to see the stocker running. I have zero experience with the L series engine (my 280z didn't have an engine in it before the swap). When I turn the ignition, all I hear is a clicking sound and nothing else. The engine does not even attempt to turn over. I read the beginners thread above and tried to clean the battery terminals and even put a new battery out of my 280z, same result. I'm not looking to spend a lot to get this engine running, but if it is just some little thing then I would like to fix it. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
  13. Well, heres the new project Click me!
  14. This build is pretty much at a close. I will be swapping the engine, drivetrain, and a few other things into my new project. You can follow it here.
  15. As some of you already know, I had successfully swapped an RB25DET into a 1975 280z. I drove it for about a month then had to put it on non op because the headlights and turn signals went out and it was finals crunch time at school for me so I had to take a break. About a week or so ago, I went down to the DMV and registered it. I soon fixed the problem and was throughly enjoying the RB25 for a total of two days. After getting brand new tires and heading down to get an alignment, I was rear ended by a truck while stopped waiting for a vehicle in front of me to make a left turn. The truck hit me while traveling at about 30-35mph so my Z was basically totaled. I dealt with the driver who hit me insurance, and to my surprise they were actually very speedy and friendly throughout the process and offered me a very fair price for the Z while allowing me to retain it. I was devastated. I looked around on craigslist and other sources and could not find a Z which I felt could be a suitable replacement. Then I thought back to a time when I was skateboarding to a friends house about five months earlier. Since I was on my cruiser board I figured Id go down some hills and take a longer route which I had never been down before. As Im skating by I see this very nice blue 240z and several other Z car shapes under covers in front of this set back house. With nothing to loose I decided to drive down there the other day and check it out. I walk up and a gentleman comes out of the house. His name is Bill and he is very friendly and is a real Z car enthusiast. He has five Zs if I remember correctly, all of which are in awesome shape and look amazing. I told him my situation and he says "I have one I would like to sell, it doesn't run". He proceeds to pull back the cover and a beautiful 1972 240z is revealed. I can hardly contain my excitement, as this was more than what I was hoping to find. A deal was struck and I called a flat bed to have it towed over to my house. RBz build 2.0 has commenced. How cool is this plate that I inherited?! Oh and since this is Hybrid Z, Im sure you all will understand that this has to go.
  16. Thank you very much Pat, I appreciate it.
  17. I would choose the Nismo plaque. However, make sure you have at least one Nismo part on your Z before applying it. Wouldnt want to be a ricer now would we? *I kid of course
  18. Well, heres an "update". I was rear ended by a pickup truck traveling at about 35mph while I was at a complete stop waiting for a moving truck in front of me make a left turn. She was deemed to be totaled by the insurance adjuster and I received a settlement and was able to retain the car. The good thing was no one was injured during the accident. Thankfully, it appears that the drivetrain and engine are ok. The body and the gas tank took the brunt of the damage. The only PITA is that the driver-side door cannot be opened which is a real inconvenience when trying to move it or whatever. Tomorrow, I am going to go pick up a little something that rhymes with "schmotson boo borty ee". Stay tuned...
  19. You know, Im not entirely sure. Do you know how this information can be confirmed? I have an RB25 S2 engine and transmission.
  20. Im waking this forum up! My Z was rear ended about a week ago and the insurance adjuster called it totalled. So i made it very clear that I wanted to retain the vehicle and they gave me a settlement of $3200. So, I have the pull the RB to get it into another Z and I figured I might as well fix that annoying throw out bearing while I am at it. My question is, where is a good source to buy one from? I am in the US. Thanks in advance guys.
  21. Hahaha Im a city slicker Tony
  22. Well, I received a check today for thirty two hundred dollars and am keeping the wrecked Z, its at my home now. I have a little something that I have had my eye on since my Z was wrecked. Im going to call the guy today and see if I can get it on a trailer and bring it over to my house. Stay tuned...
  23. I'm about 99% sure that these plenums are made in Thailand. They frequently crop up on eBay and the company also makes different size throttle bodies. I'm not sure about that particular one, but I think at least some of them by that company have velocity stacks inside.
  24. Haha thought this thread looked framiliar. I ended up using a kit from Summit Racing that works great. Although, the inlets and outlets are not on the same side.
