I'd love some HBZ stickers. How about a contest of who can do the longest burn out in their Z with a video to prove it. That way we all win, An influx of awesome tire smokin videos and someone gets some stickers for donating some of their rubber for our viewing pleasure.

The addiction, how it starts, does it stop?
jakeoster replied to ModernS30's topic in Non Tech Board
I used to have a Honda CRX that I put a B16 engine into and put together myself which was my first car. A ricer Hondas are good cars but they are just so played out and have that ricer punk stigma attatched to them. Well life moved on and I ended up selling it. I got this hair brain idea to buy a smog exempt car so I would not have to deal with the notorious California smog regulations. I like imports and casually mentioned a Datsun while talking to my Dad who was in the hospital at the time and he said he remembered when a friend of his bought one brand new when he was in high school and how much it hauled. I never really gave much thought or knew much about Datsuns because I never really see them around much. I checked out the Zs online and was blown away by how awesome this car was and why nobody else seems to know anything about them or chooses them. I bought my first 280z on Craiglist for practically nothing, it had no engine or transmission in it and I was so excited to get it. I remember sitting in it and feeling like I was in an old Corvette or a Porsche and how sporty the car looked and felt. Then I got this other hair brain idea (I thought) to swap in the notorious RB engine, the king of all import engines and still be street legal. Well come to find out I was not alone and soon after made my home here at Hybrid Z. I would not trade my Z for anything. I now am the proud owner of a 72' 240z with an L24 because my 280z was rear ended and am going to swap my RB and what not over to my new Z. I cant think of anywhere else to go from an RB swapped 240z. The power, the aerodynamics, the aftermarket support, the Z community, the aura, the double takes people on the street give me, the prestige of owning a classic car, the smog exemption, the uniqueness, its all there. No one understands why I love these cars so much and many people didnt know what I was even talking about when I told them I had bought a Z. Relatives of mine would kind of chuckle when they would ask me how it was going, expecting it to be a dead end and not knowing what an RB or a Skyline is. It was not until I took a few of them on a ride and completely smoked the tires with zero traction in 1st, 2nd, and into third with the turbo howling and the engine screaming at 8k rpm, they finally understood. Now everyone seems to be addicted to the car as much as I am and they are constantly asking whats new with it or when the next aftermarket parts will be purchased. It seems as though the Z is sort of a mysterious car that people dont understand, until the first ride -
Sounds like a stock 1990 Ford Mustang GT in white kind of guy to me. Or maybe its a sleeper since he does not care for a lot of attention but has assembled a moderately built engine over the years.

Awesome car, are you planning on keeping the RBz since you are doing that insane VQ build?

Just did some minor things today and fixed a few things that have been bugging me. I went to the store and got some various hardware to fix what was missing and half hanging on. Changed the weatherstripping guard to a brand new one on both sides. I had some sitting in my garage. Got some brand new kick plates from Nissan today, I got the hook ups from the factory...not They were laying around. I havent installed them yet because the screws are stripped "Plate Kicking" haha

Very nice. I haven't seen that one before.

I don't know of anyone in my area that is framiliar with Nistune. However there is a local shop that tunes Power FCs and has RB experience so I figured that would be a good way to go for me. Thanks for the insight 240z master.
-
So if I mated it with a Power FC would I be able to tune for it? Or does it need something else besides a stand alone ecu to function correctly? Basically my question is is it worth it or just get the Z32 one.
-
Ive been thinking of getting a Power FC lately, sorry to high jack but I heard that the Q45 MAF is an upgrade too. I do not have access to the Z32 MAF but I find quite a number of Q45s at the junk yard so I would like to use that instead to save some bucks. Is that true?

I can't elaborate much further because I've never dealt with a ZX. But on the S30 you have to pull back these tiny tabs and then this small (wooden?) square can be removed and the actual switch can be removed and cleaned. I don't know what you did there, the WD-40 might have shorted something out.

Glad to have you with us again Stony. Looking great so fat

my suggestion would be to take the one that's there out and clean it with a wire brush or the like. If you don't have a Haynes manual for your Z or something similar then I would suggest getting one. I doubt the dealer has that kind of stuff. You can get one from a junk yard or from someone off this forum or another Z forum I'd assume.

It will not tuck perfect, but it will fit and if you follow the stock exhaust route with 3" it will work. Mine hardly scrapes unless I hit a speed bump too fast.
-
All good, I fried my ECU on first start up and wanted to kick myself in the ass for it. But I am glad that you are finding everything that you need and tying up all of those loose ends. I can relate to that haha, it took me a while too. But when you finally get it running it's worth it.
-
Cool deal man. You putting it into an S30?
-
The lights don't turn on at all? 1. Remove bulbs and check them on a battery to see if they work 2. If they work then reinstall them and check to make sure the wires arnt loose or anything. 3. If that checks out then either remove the switching unit on your tree and either take it apart and clean the contacts or get a new one from the JY or whatever. If the headlights do turn on but the high beams or whatever just don't work then it's probally bad contacts at the switch. That's the best I can do. Someone else jump in if I'm missing something or move this thread to the troubleshooting section.

If your "super newbish" then maybe it's a better idea to hang tight with the VG30 that's in there for a while.

I'm not using an app, just loaded it up out of normal Safari and it isn't just formatted it looks like a specially designed layout or something.
-
Site looks awesome on my iPhone with the new theme or whatever you guys did. I've been dying for it! So much easier to navigate now. Thanks!

Finished. She runs now. I just have to fix the headlights (bad contacts at the Switch I think) and fix the right turn signal that doesn't flash for some reason, it works though.

My 72' has got those ears for mounting the transmission similar to the 75' that I need to cut off to fit the RB25 transmission. But the McKinney trans mount straddles the transmission tunnel and you bolt it through the floor of the Z if i remember correctly. Im not sure if that area is the same on the 240z and will allow the mount to seat correctly. Thats what I am concerned about. Thanks. Heres a picture of my mount on the 280z for reference.
-
Sweet man. I got my 75' 280z when I was 17 and worked on it for a long time. It still looked like hell when I got it running, but she ran with the best of em. Keep in mind that it dont matter how cool your car looks, if its still sitting in the garage not running then whats the point By the way, sweet engine setup you got there, should run great. Keep us posted.
-
Well, the "hard" route would be to figure out the mounts and fab them yourself along with the wiring harness. The easy route is going through McKinney Motorsports or a similar shop and having them work out the tough stuff for you. Other then that its pretty much straight forward. Little stuff comes up here and there that will get on your nerves but if you have any automotive experience then it shouldn't be too much to handle.

I have a transmission mount for a 1975 280z for an RB25 transmission which is currently in my wrecked 280z. I recently purchased a 1972 240z with the insurance money I received for being rear ended and was wondering if I could somehow modify it to work in the 240z so I don't have to buy a brand new one. Or if someone can post a picture of a 72' 240z mount then what would be awesome too. Thanks. I am assuming that the engine mounts should be the same regardless if it is a 72' or 75'.
