Well, this has become a lot more urgent of a conversion on my end. The car wont move until I get something done about this. I decided to go for a drive with a friend today and even with almost a full tank of gas and under normal driving conditions the car was running like utter crap, nearly dying under light throttle load and would sputter very badly over about 2000 RPMs. Of course it waited to do this when I was about 15 miles away from home haha! I had to limp it home and almost had to have the car towed because it was that bad. Im pretty sure the fuel pump cavitated or something along those lines...maybe vapor lock? After I came home and let it sit for a while it seemed to have cleared up. Im getting paid this coming Friday and am going to pay off my credit card then see what I have left and start doing something. Im pretty set on doing an in-tank setup so Im going to most likely have the tank professionally cleaned first before I go about hacking and welding on it and then go from there.

If you have the money, why not? I wish I would have went RB26, it would have taken me a bit longer but it would have been worth it.
-
Im in San Diego. I'm telling you first hand experience from a 1975 280z with an RB25DET Series 2 swap. I was written up for modified exhaust and intake by the CHP like 2 years ago. I never even went to the ref. So unless by going to to the ref that caused some sort of problem, which I don't think it would, you should be ok doing what I did. I was able to reregister it without incident following showing the court that I put the car on non-op status.
-
I do not think you can do that. The court is going to ask you to produce proof that you fixed it or put it on non-op. At least that's how it is in my area. But anyway why waste that kind of money? Non op as soon as you can, take to court, and your charges will be dropped in addition to not having to pay the fine. Then reregister it right after that. Us Cali guys are a lot better off just putting a stockish looking muffler on our cars and avoiding this drama. From my experience cops normally go off the look of the muffler. If you gotta big cannon on the back it makes it easy for em.

Yeah, best not to get a ticket. That's a real drain on things especially when you are trying to complete a build. Maybe you can get it out to a track in your area sometime and really open the taps.

Bittersweet weekend. I put some new plugs in my RB and it's running a ton better! I put in NGK BCPR7EIX with a .028 gap as I had plugs in it that were both incorrect heat range and the wrong plug. It stopped the idle and higher rpm miss and pulls strong. A few friends and I decided to go for a mountain run and unfortunately one of my friends who was driving his brand new 2010 Subaru lost control coming out of a hairpin corner and overcorrected to keep from going into a 12ft drop ravine. He was lucky not to have gone down into that but instead ended up launching it off a 4ft vertical berm at about 60mph on the side of the road into some brush. The car is pretty much done. The whole front end is gone, front quater panels buckled in, must be frame damage, drivetrain and engine seem to be damaged, and I'm sure the suspension and undercarriage is shot. It was a sad day and weekend. Kind of puts things into perspective and I know I have learned from it. Be careful out there guys. We, especially on Hybrid Z, have some powerful machines and must respect their power and not go beyond both our and our cars abilities.
-
Guys, chill. Non op, show to court, reregister. I've done this and it works without issue. They even gave me my money back.
-
I got one before on my 280z. What I did was put it on non op status then re-registered it again. Problem went away. Showed the court my non-op and it was clear. I didn't need my car so it wasn't really a big deal for me. This is why I opted for a very stock looking 3" exhaust, saves a lot of potential hassle as cops mostly look at the muffler first then go from there.

I was surprised when I went to Germany on vacation as I traveled the Autobahn and never saw anything but a white R34 (GTR?) that seemed to have been converted to left hand drive. He was driving pretty slowly, twas a number of years ago before I even had or thought about putting an RB into a Z when the Skyline was a mythical car to me haha. I remember snapping a few pictures and being excited haha. I was surprised that I saw an R34 as I was expecting to see some Porsches and BMWs rocketing down the expressway. The only cars I saw was the R34 and a Porsche Boxster (meh) and both were driving very civilized haha. I figured it had something to do with gas prices or something. I seem to see R34s in the oddest of places. That one in Germany and another one that looked highly modified who was driving (illegally? lol) down Broadway in the city I live in. I also saw a 700 hp R34 build on a lift at Drift Speed where I had my car tuned. Now interestingly while in Ireland I saw quite a few sweet cars of different variety from Ferrari to Skylines. Yeah, Im a car nut...

Hey Bonk, are you going to put any baffles in or are you planning on just trying it out and seeing how it goes? I really like your setup though, thats about what I had in mind.
-
Dude, that dash came out sweet! It looks brand new to me. Im sure thats got to be one fun ride, what are your power goals? Let me know how the twin disk feels for like driving around town as I might get one in the future when I up my power.

need the lenght of the driveshaft for rb swap
jakeoster replied to Spoony's topic in Nissan RB Forum
As for the LSD, Im only making about 265hp and if I give it throttle in even a moderate corner it breaks traction on me. A LSD is the way to go for sure. And with 450rwhp Im sure the 30 something year old differential would be nothing more than a ticking hand grenade. Quaife makes a really nice drop in helical LSD for our differentials. The other route is using a clutch one from a Z32. Theres more but they are less common. If your running McKinney mounts Im sure you could ask him what the length of the drive shaft is. Im sure hed be happy to tell you if your spending some money there. -
FUUUUUUUU I highly envy you. You live in Germany with cars like that? Holy crap that must be fun. Supra, R32, R34, 911, and a Z?! Thats the best line up of cars Ive ever seen. Welcome to Hybridz!

Go ask a guy on here named Big Phil. He put an RB30DET into a 240sx and is now going to put it in his 280z. The 240sx just does not have the wow factor like the 240/260/280z does. I dont drive mine very often but everytime, not just sometimes, Ill get one or more of the following, Ill get a thumbs up, people rubber necking and turning around to get a look at the car, people asking me questions or just saying how cool Zs are or that they owned one at parking lots and stop lights, people hauling ass to get up along side it for a look. From all kinds of people, Z guys, import guys, old people, young people, domestic guys, people that know nothing about cars, etc. The 240sx just isnt like that. And personally I enjoy it and I like having a car that you just dont see everyday. It adds to the experiences. Thats my opinion. Thats pretty much what stopped me from getting a Subaru Impreza STI. As well as the fact that the RB engine just screams and is such a great sounding engine. s30+RB=Match made in heaven.

The cost depends on what comes up. If you have a perfect swap with no issues then a dyno tune would be about $300. My swap had a substantial amount of issues with it that I had him rectify and it ended up being about $1900. I had a cracked turbo comp housing, no gasket between the turbo and manifold, had him clean up my wiring, get my autometer tach working, broken waste gate actuator, relocate my O2 sensor bung to a better location, added relays, and a bunch of other things I cant remember in addition to the dyno tune. Well worth the money spent. I would HIGHLY recommend Drift Speed (the shop I had my stuff done), not only is the tuner, Koji, very good at what he does and knows his RBs and Nissans in general, but he was very cool and kept me informed without me having to ever bug him about anything. And he owns a 72' 240z himself which is pretty cool. The staff is really friendly and approachable and always answered their phone instantly. The place is just real clean and nice with some REALLY nice cars in the shop. I wont be taking my car anywhere else. As for your ecu, it can be modified to accept a tune but Im not sure what the tunability of something like that is and I think it would require something special to flash the ecu. You could call or email them to ask them about it and if they can tune it. The Power Fc is a nice standalone and the hand controller is real handy for looking over various diagnostics such as knock and timing. Koji is really good and quick at tuning the Power Fc so its a good option. If you call Apexi themselves and ask them, they will refer you to Koji and Drift Speed. They do tune other standalones but Im not sure which ones.
-
Nah, in this order; Filter, connected to MAF (if you got the Apexi intake like I do), some length of pipe, 45-90 degree bend, another bend, BOV recirc angled to shoot directly into turbo inlet as close as you can get. From my understanding you want steeper bends the closer the Maf is to the turbo and the BOV recirc aimed away from the maf as much as possible in addition to being as far from the MAF and as close to the turbo inlet as possible.

Well Ive never been in a car with an RB26 or a Ferrari or anything. The fastest car Ive been in before my build was a lightly modified Civic hatch with a B16 Vtec swap so Im hardly an authority. But to me and my friends that have been in the car seem to think its damn fast haha! As far as response I can say its, if anything, slightly too responsive as even a very light foot can get boost flowing. Also, from what I have read, a GReddy plenum and a Q45 throttle body actually causes lower end power to suffer a bit as it is designed for high horsepower applications with peak power in mind. Food for thought as I don't know this for certain. I cant tell, but are you running a MAF? I have my air filter located where yours is and my tuner said its a very poor location for MAF readings. I also see that your blow off valve is recirc'd right behind the MAF (if there is a maf behind your filter) and that would throw the MAF readings off due to air being blasted right behind it. This is why you have the sound because the air is essentially being blasted out of the intake. You have to extend the intake pipe and have some bends in it and angle the entry for the BOV recirc pointed into the turbo inlet to keep the MAF happy. Similar to how the stock intake charge pipe is for the RB25 (the rubber one). Im going to be in the process of doing this too. Car looks awesome though!

Thanks for the link! And the reason I don't want to go with a surge tank I'd because that would be 2x the external pumps which adds even more noise for this mostly street driven car.
-
Good to see that you've fixed the issue. Same thing happened to me with the car dying and it drove me nuts!
-
I'm not sure about the colors, I think mine are different. But its the two wires that are in a plug that plug into the side of the alternator closest to the frame rail on the passesngers side.
-
I had this problem on my RB25 240z. The issue? The two wires that plug into the alternator were flipped. All I had to do was flip them around and it charges great now.
-
What do you guys recommend for cleaning out the fuel tank?
-
Badass! How insanely awesome it must be to smoke a purpose built sports car in a hippie/stoner V Dub bus. If only it had hippie flowers painted on it, that would be the ultimate sleeper. In fact it would be so sleeper that people would think they were having a moment of psychosis and think they are imagining things.
-
Thanks for the reply but I was looking for more 240z specific like where people are mounting them in the tank and which pump would be suitable, I'm interested in something oem like an R32 GTR fuel pump or something along those lines. Thanks!

I got the Z back from the tuner last Friday and the car is running 1000 times better then it was when I dropped it off. However it still has some issues to work out as I could not afford to have him do everything. He did the major stuff and put a nice tune on it. Made 265hp and 236 ft/lbs of torque at the flywheel. Dyno sheet: Cleaned up wiring: Not very good quality picture, but shows where everythings mounted. Power FC commander is mounted with an adjustable cell phone holder. The suction cup just so happens to be the same size as the water temp gauge and holds great and is in the most optimal viewing postion. I dont even need that particular gauge as the Commander displays the information (gauge also just so happens to not work anyway haha). To do list: -Buy and install the correct spark plugs, mine are wrong plug and heat range. -Extend intake charge pipe and put some bends in it so the MAF can read correctly -Recirculate blow off valve back into intake charge pipe -Convert to in-tank fuel pump -Mount intercooler -Fix O2 sensor (does not work) Tuner used a wide band to tune the car with and bypassed my stock one. -Install various plugs and connectors I picked up at the junk yard for the wiring harness -Other stuff I cant remember at the moment...
