  1. Hey I have a Turbo XS BOV on my Z. Works great!.. It does send my car dead rich when i shift though.. Air/Fuel monitor reads 10:1 and flashing.. hehehe car doesn't stall, or leak vacuum at idle. If I rev it in neutral, I can make it blow off though.. It is adjustable as well, and takes a bit of fiddling. Loudest BOV I think there is.. Every turbo guy who hears it says it is the loudest damn BOV they have ever heard.. WAY louder than a transport truck venting his air brakes..
  2. The VG30ET is from 1984-1989 300zxt's single turbo single overhead cam V6 3.0L The VG30DETT is from 1991-1996 300zxt's. they are twin overhead cam twin turbo 3.0L v6's. (as produced for the north american market.)
  3. Sheesh. I'm am proof of my own prophecy of going over budget on my project. I made a HUGE mistake by changing the model year of my 300zxt engine. I originally installed an 86 300zxt driveline. I bought another engine from an 87 300zxt to rebuild while still enjoying my Z. 86-87 is the cross over year for the engines in 300zx's Sent 87 driveline to be balanced.. uhhh an 87 flywheel which is 10" and an 86's is 9.25".. this means my recent clutch in the z now is now useless. Found a lightweight front pully with only 2 drivebelt pullies. got it balanced with driveline.. it was from an 84... guess what.. the part of the crank that sticks out of the front of the front cover is longer than on the 87 than the 86 and older... soo.. i needed a custom spacer made to go in between the pully and the crank bolt.. (like a washer) Hmm what next you say.. how about the 87zxt engine I have must have been the only one in the world with out an oil cooler hook up.. So we had to convert the block to the style that uses an oil cooler (needed a freeze plug and remove the check ball from the block. (not a big prob..just anoying.) as i have the 86 engine to use for parts.. Other than that its has gone very well. engine looks killer now.. all cleaned/painted etc.. I'm now a few weeks behind schedule as I have waited for parts to be delivered or made. The suspense is killing me.. O well, I've been there before...no mountain is too big if you through enough TNT errrr Money at it! hehe I had no idea the engines were that different... but they are.. trust me.. lots of little tiny things... good thing I have the 86 engine in the shop as well as an 84 that I have been canabalizing for a few years.
  4. Cool vid. A replica GT 40 would be wickedly light and strong, and quick. Skyline would be more comfortable.. even with 4 people in the car! hehe If that GT40 is set up, I'd think that skyline would have to really give all it could to beat that thing... Now where is that 1200hp skyline when you need it? Heck as for bragging rights for the GT 40 it sure was a killer car in its day.. but how about a late 80's/90's imsa Z GTO or GTP? hehehe Ok my pulse is really racing.. Uh what was I talking about? all the blood in my body headed somewhere else all of a sudden.
  5. Will be a boulevard cruiser I suppose.. Mainly a show car. Yea I know it sounds pretty extreme... even for me.
  6. Just throwing this one out as well. All this talk of mods to front suspension brings me this question. People here have custom modded rear suspensions.. live axels, jag and vet suspensions. Anyone tried a upper and lower a arm setup for the front?. A lot of kit car guys use mustang 2 front suspensions with coilovers on the street rods, and cobra kits etc.. I happen to know the guy who posted on here a while back about widening his suspension track by 8" plus on each side. He wants to put on this wild wild custom body on the car, and needs to bring the wheels out to the edge of the wheel wells. The guy who did my engine install, is looking into modding this guys car, and is also looking for options. I figured a live axel rear is simple for the rear. (car is 300zxt 2+2 with a LT1 and T5/6 manual tranny) but how to widen the front track is a pain.. (moving stock mounts and using the stock suspension as much as possible) BUT a mustang 2 set up would be easy to fab mounts for.. is widely used by kit cars... the suspension geomotry is pretty good (I think).. Anyone tried this ? or know of a link? I'm kinda rambling here.. sorry.. too much info..too many options too many Q's. Any info or opinions are welcome. Just trying to help a fellow Z'r Thanks.
  7. I have seen some pretty good jobs of stock frame rail replacememt. Would this not be easier? I saw an entire front end get rebuilt from almost nothing.. looked factory when done. Then there is no worries about crossmember mounts. I'd only go custom if I was going to tube the entire front end and do away with all the sheet metal engine bay/towers etc.. Just putting that out that there are options to custom frame rails in the engine bay... just in case someone does a search on this in the future.. hehe
  8. Yup a Flat crank. Saw/heard an older buick regal tearing around the track (Mosport) a number of years ago. Thing sounded like some kind of impossible rotary engine... till the sight of the Buick making the noise. Heard from the guy that he had a "flat crank" and that his V8 was actually firing 2 cyl at the same time. Anyone ever heard of this? never seen or heard anything of it before or since... I have Zero other info about this engine.. zero. Was it a custom one off? talk about torque!
  9. I'm afraid to add it up right now. All Canadian $$ 600.00 for hybrid turbo 100.00 boost controller 300.00 FPR 300.00 BOV 200.00 used I/C 500.00 for spare engine. 1200.00 for balancing, shotpeening 1000.00 for polishing rods, crank 1000.00 for p&p heads, plus seals. etc.. 600.00 for clutch 300.00 for muffler 300.00 custom bent exhaust 900.00 custom bent/fitted I/C pipes 200.00 new oil cooler 400.00 new gasket set 300.00 oil pump 600.00 new sensors/waterpump/timing belt and related equip. And I haven't even mentioned all the labour to re/re umm this is getting depressing... too much $$$ ouch $8,800 and counting. not bad I guess for a high 12 sec engine... that will last.. I won't even get into what the swap itself cost! PS IT ALWAYS COSTS MORE THAN PLANNED!!!!!! 30% at least.. anyone who says different is lying. That darn "while its apart" syndrome.

I luvs Chickuns! "Boy your about as sharp as a bowlin ball" You guys crack me up!
  11. I'm just in way too deep with my Z. Now that I'm a member of the newly single group (2 yrs) I think I've totally lost my mind. To say I am focused on my Z is a huge understatement. With that said, I've made some observations on this and the other Z forums (like there are actually other types of forums.. hehe) that I hang out at. This is not a jab at anyone, but wow do you guys have a lot of other projects on the go!! some multiple projects at the same time!!! How the heck can you do it? I can't imagine another project holding my Z project back... A 1 week delay is too much let alone years.. I'd think it'd be the death of me.. I can't focus properly on more than one project/toy, let alone have the $$ to spend on multiple projects. My Z is expensive enough. Chime in here folks if you'd like to tell me how you do it? Now I do have other hobbies that I enjoy. sailing, mountain biking, rollerblading, skiing, computers/web surfing, but nothing will stop me and my Z.. even if I have to eat kraft dinner and P&J sandwiches for a month to get a part for the z. I guess there is nothing really wrong with multiple projects.. as long as they don't bog you down, and you end up with eternal projects that never see the light of day and are lost to newer cool projects. Am I a Serial Z lover?.. am I over the top when it comes to my Z's? I suspect that I might be the crazy one... Like a fat guy playing dodge ball... I'm out! (thanks to who ever made that above statement..I love it!!hehe) Peace.
  12. Yea weld it! even cheaper if ya have the tools!hehehe I'm always up for a low budget trick!! I bought a 3.9 R200 like this a few years ago.. It was great for launching!! The car would really hook, and I decimated lots of suckers with that combo. Kinda hard on U joints though.. as mine was a near daily driver street shark. Drove it on the street like that for two summers.. even in the rain! It wasn't as bad a people say they are. I have some great footage of the car on the track in the pouring rain with that diff... not one spinout.. and yea I pushed it all it could suffer..It was loads of fun. Though it was like pushing a cement truck whenever the car wasn't running...
  13. Not sure on your definition of bone jarring, but I have springs from a 78 chevette (heavy duty option) They are the same size as ours.. just need to cut a coil or so out of them (if you want your car lowered) yea I said chevette springs.
  14. Drop me an email Drew. Are you in the Toronto area?.. east end perhaps? Anyways. I have the single turbo swap. (VG30ET) and I know of a 94 300zxtt driveline sitting at my mechanics shop. He is just itching to drop it into a 240. I almost did it myself, but circumstances came about and I went for the VG30ET instead. It can certainly be done and as mentioned above, Greg did an excellent execution of the swap.
  15. Not sure on the value of my input, but I'll post anyways, and you can judge for yourself. 60" total track front 66" total track rear. I have 60" of track up front (outside of tire to outside of tire) On my lowered 78 280 under stock fenders. Tires are 225/50/16. The rear track is 66" to the outside of each tire under custom fenders. Tires are 265/45/16.
  16. I really don't have much info on the t5 (l28ET driveline) I would think with so many 300zx's around in JY's that there is a reason no one has put in a 300zx 5 speed in a 1st gen Z. On mine the shifter came up 1.5 inches further forward than stock. My tranny mount looks like yours, because it is a stock 280z mount that I modified to fit the 300zxt 5 speed, yet still bolt to the stock locations. (it was the first step we took in locating the driveline in the car, and was one less custom part to make.. (the tranny mounts in the tunnel that is.) Because of the significant customizing needed for the swap, plus no documentation on the swap. ( I found zero info when I did extensive web searches other than rumours of someone who may have done it at some time.) The fact that V8 swaps are very common and documented. and kits are available as well, make the VG swap not worth the $ in comparison. Best bang for your buck would be a v8. It definately has its advantages, and certainly has a certain amount of WOW factor. Of course there are lots of guys who like a challenge and are capable of designing and hand fabricating parts. This swap is definitely not a budget swap.
  17. I used to subscribe to KitCar magazine, and there were some pretty wild kits for the 914 Porsches.. as well as some V8 swaps for 911's.. Yep 911's. I was very interested in the 914.. not too pricey, lots of potential.. I never cared for the style, but some of the body kits were pretty nice. I like the looks of that v8914 I don't care for the snorkle, but to each his own.. He sounds like the kind of guy who does something just because he wants to.. hmm theres that ol "form over function" thing again. hehehe.
  18. I too started at zcar.com. Then I recall zdriver starting with Kyle Jester.. my car was the first car pic on the site, and was used as part of his logo for a while.. (also the first z car of the month) hehehe "plug" hehe I remember the heated flame wars at zcar.com and the V8 guys leaving. I was in on all the forums pretty early on.. my craving for z info.. well ok .. a bit of bragging too... hehe I have older lists of z sites that I have been too.. over 450 sites.. I printed off hundreds of pages of info from these sites.. I have 3" three ring binders full.. made Dennis' "handy dandy z fact sheet" Jealous hehehe Just kidding Dennis if you visit this site.. hehehe I have that fact sheet also.. 60 some odd pages... I still visit and post at zcar.com zdriver, and here.. Hybridz is my new home where I spend most of my time now.. The forums are much more technical and friendly.. (seen the water injection thread at zcar.com??? ) yeessshhh I probably spend 5-10 hrs a week at these sites..I've been cutting back. I was doing almost 60hrs a week for a couple of months just devouring all the data I could find. I'm not as sick anymore.. Learned so much it is not even funny now.. Z car.com can seem pretty newbie like these days. Sorry I can't put any dates to these.. Except to say I've been surfing since 94-95 sometime.. zcar.com was VERY young.. used to have daily lunch hour chats using the forums... lol good days they were. 10+ people sometimes.. met a lot of z people that way.. Used to hang at zdriver chat for a long time.. I don't have much time these days for that. This site rocks guys. Don't give up! I never will. Give me Z or give me death.. Ok I'll shut up.. I'm rambling.. I'm outa here.
  19. On another note, when you test fit the motor in the bay.. don't take the easy way out.. If you move the motor forward a bit (not sure how much it can move) you may not need the same mods, but I can tell you, you will not be pleased with the handling. I talked to a fellow who had a friend do the swap, and is not happy at all with the handling.. I guess he placed it too far forward, because he never mentioned and steering mods.. Also if you raise the motor slightly you don't need the mods.. again.. this is a kludge fix.. you will run into hood clearance issues.. as well as handling negatives.. I took the harder way and did it all right the first time.. more $ and time, but the effort paid off with a better package. Handling is wild.. feels like a 4 wheel steering car.. it kinda pivots around the corner.. you don't feel the weight of the nose pushing around the corner... This car really can handle late braking!! another BTW.. you'll need other suspension and braking upgrades... or you'll likely kill yourself. Like me.. stock boost didn't last long..I'm at 18psi now, and the car feels so fast it is almost scareing me. If ya can get the car for free, that is excellent.. there are lots of little bits of electronics you'll need and having a complete car handy is the best way.. I did the same thing.. had the car there the whole time so we could scrounge for parts and also to see how somethings where hooked up in the original car. Good luck.
  20. Sorry you can't use your t5. The VG as you know is a v6 and the bell housing is different.. probably the shaft too.. NOt sure about your driveshaft.. I'd guess not.. Mine is a blend of 300zx at the tranny side, and 280z at the other.. the mounting flange ( on the diff)for the driveshaft at the diff side (I have a 300zxt lsd) was too large in diameter, so I swapped in the smaller 280z flange I don't have plans written out.. I do have lots of pics at the zdriver site. The article has quite a bit in it as well.
  21. As always things seem to snow ball on me.. Thanks all of you very much for the comments. I completely aggree with your theory of my muffler.. but it looks too cool to lose it.. So I'm going to suffer with it, and try some areo effects to help ease it.. I guess I'm a slave to Form over Function.. Darn proud of it or I'd be driving an electric car to the cruise nights. hehehe I'm proceeding with the veritical diffusers, but now as per my usual thoughts of "I can do anything if I throw enough time and $$ at it" I'm going to experiment with installing a rear belly pan. There is another Z'r that has his car serviced by the Z Master, and he is copying my front belly pan, and is currently setting up for the rear pan, so I'm going to help him, and take the ideas over to my Z.. It should work out much better this way.. My front pan is removeable, and so I'll make my rear one the same... Best part is once I have the pan in place, I can shape my diffusers to the pan, and have them tig welded to the pan!! No worries for mounting!! All this fooling around while I'm in the middle of installing the new motor in the Z. Its almost done.. week or so needed to finish it off. I'll take pics as this progresses, naturally.
  22. I don't think you checked the right forum.. I might as well chime in here, cause any hybridz regulars are probably ask you to look for me anyways.. hehe I have done the swap you are talking about. There is one other fellow who frequents this site who lives in Austrailia who has done this swap as well.. Anyways, I'll give ya some quick info. 300zxt 5 speed had T5's but are different than your t5 in your 280. The 300zxt motor is called a VG30ET. 84-86 300zxt's have 3.54 open R 200 diffs. 87-89 300zxt have 3.7 lsd R 200 diffs. The motor doesn't fit very well, and requires mods to the steering and frame rail on the drivers side. Reinforcing of the frame rails is neccessary as new mounts in new locations are needed. The alt bracket needs to be made as the stock one does not clear. This is not a swap for the faint of heart... or a budget build up. I could have had a V8 for 1/3 of the money. Works really well when done right. Lighter motor, mid engine placement, decent gas mileage, and all the power you'll need. With a few upgrades, things can get down right scary fast. I have written some articles about this swap That are hosted on the web.. one is listed in my BIO, the other is still located in the articles section at Zdriver.com (I checked its still there) Good luck if you decide to go for it.

    pimped exhaust

Shibby! "shibby"= I agree, its cool" Hehehe Some Canadian slang. "Keep your stick on the ice"= don't let life knock you down. (also said by the ref before he throughs your a$$ in the penalty box) "Hey there old trout"= How's it goin eh? "How's it goin eh?"= Hello how are you doing? "The light be a reddening"= traffic light turned yellow.. (also means Booter!!)hehe "spawn of satan"=street racers JK on the last one.. authorities might say it though.. even though street racing accounts for less than 1% of traffic deaths. Ok ok off topic.. "like a fat guy playing dodgeball..I'M OUT" hehehe I got to use it first!!! Peace.
  24. I've been thinking about posting about this very question.. I'm more interested why more people are not using it.. I found some good web sites with do it yourself instructions on how to build a system. I too have been toying with the idea, but at this point it is not neccessary for me.. my car will run out of fuel long before I have to worry about detonation and cranking the boost up more. When blended with alcohol, it will give a bit of fuel to burn..(not much tho) It is a cheap and easy method of increasing your boost levels without going through all kinds of extra work to the engine.. I know of guys in the past who have had dead simple turbo FI setups and got away with outragous amounts of boost by using water injection. For the budget builder, it should be more common place. don't know why poeple don't talk about it more.. I've got almost everything I need to build a system.. not sure of benifits to me at present.. Anyone tried or is currently using water injection?.. or is this a kind of racer secret weapon..?
