Oh here we go, spare me the "you're just like every other Supra owner" crap. It's just that - crap. My car ran those numbers with DOT tires - Nitto 555Rs that I removed from daily use when the wear bars showed and with a whopping 5 gallons of race gas. Surprise, I have and DO drive the car on the street with both of those "track modifications". The only reason why race gas was used was because it's a safety net against detonation and I had wanted to turn the boost up further. The boost wasn't raised simply because an injector developed a problem (appears partially clogged) and I chose to park the car rather than go lean. With my driving at the time I wouldn't have been able to use the added boost very well anyway unless I'd brought it up with road speed and I've not fooled with doing that yet. Cry me a river about how others make excuses but spare the finger pointing at me. With all of 300 posts it's obvious you've not learned much maturity here. I don't present my car as God's chariot - I know it's weak points and I also know it's strong points. It would seem you've not done your homework. You typify me with a crowd I don't associate with much, it's kind of funny actually. On the other hand it's sad that you've decided to act this way on a board that's normally far more civil. You sure you weren't looking for ZCAR.com or something? How much power a drivetrain can take most absolutely DOES have a bearing and if you think it doesn't then you've obviously never broken anything! I've broken a "few things" on my Z and got pretty sick of it, the Supra on the other hand has been bulletproof so far save a power steering pump that took a dump. How much power a motor can reliably make also has a bearing on things, stick your head in the sand if you want but it's true. There are several import motors that make sick power - after you replace pistons and rods! If you're willing to make that plunge by all means blow your cash but I happen to prefer to start with something strong from the start and not sweat toasting a piston or shattering a rod. Hell for the cost of rods, pistons, and machine work for most motors I can buy a NEW (not rebuilt) 2JZ shortblock. But hey smart guy that stuff doesn't matter does it?

An 11.0@123 is pretty much what I'd expect from a car trapping 123mph, that's pretty good I think and would have to have a killer launch. Hell that's a hair from a 10 - who's bitching? However when you see a 12.8@123 then hell yes you will see excuses! If you know squat about racing you'll know exactly why too I've even got a 12second slip with a trap of 126mph, what's wrong with that picture? Supras are capable cars and when they don't perform to their ability there's going to be a caveat afterwards. Personally I could care less what others think as having owned this car for awhile I know what it's capable of. You've not driven one, that much is obvious from your "down the nose" comments. As for telling an N/A from a Turbo - look for an emblem on the back passenger side. Turbos will usually say Turbo. The wing isn't a good way to tell them apart as I've seen quite a few winged N/A and a few wingless turbo cars. Removing that wing is supposed to be good for 2 tenths in the quarter That sucker puts down 60lbs of force at highway speeds and I'd guess has some huge drag associated with it. Brake sizes are different on an N/A but I doubt I coudl eye ball the difference. Lots of people are turbocharging the N/A model along with IS300 and SC300 too. I think I'd like a turbo SC300! Honda engine making 500+ HP? Sure, it's possible. I'm pretty sure there's at least one of them on the AEM forum making big power like that. It'll require race gas, a TON of RPM, and big boost though. Getting smaller displacement engines to make big power requires trade offs. Want 900+RWHP out of a 3liter Supra? Fine, expect to make your power at over 4K RPM unless you spool it with Nitrous. Expect the power to come on VERY hard and you had better bump the rev limit up to about 8K to have any kind of power band. The same holds true for a Honda although possibly even more so. That small a displacement is going to rev 9K and require a TON of work to hold together. The power curve will be ugly and peaky but if you can keep it in the power band it'll be fun. Oh and I wonder what he'll do for axle shafts and a transmission The Supras, 6spds anyway, are blessed with a bulletproof trans - Hondas are NOT. The Supra also don't break axles easily and the driveshaft seems to hold up - not on a Honda. Beat on a stock Honda and you can break things FWIW it's things like this that caused me to sell my RX7 and buy the Supra in the first place - I wanted it bulletproof from the start. I've done the broken tranny thing (Mustang & T56 in my 240Z), I've done the broken halfshaft thing (2 times in the Z), and I know I'd have blown the motor in the FD3 so I went with the Supra. I'd think a Honda with about 350WHP and low weight would be about "right". It would be quick and a ton of fun, rev it to 8K+ and it would be a fun ride. Shooting for 600 HP on the other hand is a bit too much IMO. Too many other things to break! Plus front wheel drive just sux A white exhaust tip means the car is running race gas. A mix will still be black depending on the mix but in just a couple of 1/4 passes on straight race gas I've seen a Supra tip go white. Done right on race gas a Supra will be able to run 30PSI of boost and high timing - it will FLY. If it's a single turbo it should be making a minimum of 500HP at the wheels. My 550 is actually dissapointing and ought to be closer to 600. My figure is from a Mustang dyno though and I'm hoping a DynoJet will be closer to what I expect. I spoke to a guy at the track with my combo who claimed 600RWHP on 19PSI using pump gas, my turbo will make 30 PSI so figure around 700RWHP. That's what good tuning will get me along with some race gas. My power is low for the boost I ran on the dyno and at the track. P.S. 490RWHP on stock twins? I'd be suspicious to say the least. 450 is up there and 460 is the highest I recall hearing about but I'm NOT an expert. That car had better have an intercooler, exhaust, a small pile of electronics, and have been running on race gas to come close to that. The OEM fuel system maxes out at around 500RWHP after some mods are made to remove restrictions so he's pushing it. With a small shot of nitrous those figures are very believable but pushing the stock fuel system to the limit. If he's full BPU tell him to slap a single and a fuel system on there - the difference is amazing 8)

Bahahhaha...god I love supra guys. There has never ever...in the history of the world...been a supra thats made a pass on the track, run on the dyno, or race on the street at "Full Boost" or where he was "All in it" Its a known fact that supras cant be beaten....and if by chance you do beat one???? Well...the driver was either not racing...not "all in it"....on low boost....or it was an NA automatic Thats just funny Whatever. I boosted 1.5BAR, the car can take two. However I'm still tuning and I was more interested in getting the car to drive right than a quick(er) time or toasted motor. 550RWHP ought to get me down the track a bit faster and guys with my combo are over 600RWHP on pump so there's room to improve. The guy who ran the 10.4s has run 10.3s and he NEVER locks up his torque converter so there's certainly more left in it. I know his boost wasn't all the way up too - he's having trans problems and was working on fixing them not running high boost. Kind of sucks when half your runs are aborted due to being stuck in a gear - even those runs were in the 12s! To run high boost requires race gas or meth injection. This isn't something that many people run full time (well, maybe meth). Many Supra drivers, including myself, have a hell of a time launching - the street is even worse. Fact of life - this much power is a bitch to hook. The power curve on a tuned Supra can go from 200RWHP to 500+ in less than 1K RPM, ponder that. Highway runs are where Supra shine. The power can be hooked, the gearing rox, and it's hard to blow a shift on a highway run. Never race a Supra on the highway, especially if the exhaust tip is white inside Supra can obviously be beat but you never know what you're going to get when you race one. Any car that's capable of 900RWHP on a stock bottom end is impressive and most aren't stock. You just never know if it's going to be a N/A wuss or a single turbo monster on race gas waiting to spring I'm happy with an 11.4 and wish I could've backed it up a few times. I know it's capable of more, believe it or not - no skin off my back. <shrug> If it makes you feel better my first run on street tires was a 12.8 @122mph. The funny thing is that little twits in Hondas and most everything else love to drive by and rev. I wish I had a dollar for every punk who zoomed by me then hit the hazards, wonder how many claim that as a kill? Mudge - a stock LS1 Camaro vs a stock Supra would probably be ugly. Stock for stock the Camaro will probably win - their power curve has more area under the curve. Stock turbosfuel and max boost made just 390RWHP on my car which is supposed to be low. That kind of power is certainly achievable on a stock looking Camaro. Heh, I did pickup 125RWHP midrange by changing the way the twins sequenced - that was a BIG difference on my car. Peak power didn't budge though and I went single before getting the combo totally sorted out. The stock turbos just don't move enough air for this motor Personally I think Cobras are scarier than Camaro, many of them in my area are making 500RWHP with few mods. Talk about bang for the buck! The power curve is long and pretty flat too

Actually I've got an 11.4sec timeslip that says different. Lack of traction is true though but there's nothing like breaking tires loose in 4th rolling into the gas With zero breakage too! A friend of mine ran consistant 10.4s @ 130+ the day I got my 11.4 - damned automatics! He didn't even turn his boost up much and I too was running less than 100% of what I could have - my problem is the driver The 10sec Supra could be daily driven if he wanted - the A/C works fine and except for the rollbar it's stock inside. Sick I tell you! A 10 sec Honda is going to be a tin can sans interior with goofy looking slicks and probably a spool out front. This isn't going to be a car with A/C and it's probably half fiberglass. That said - I've seen some pretty sweet Hondas running around. Some of them look pretty clean and while they aren't something I'd fear on the street they still look nice. Decent sized turbo and it would be a fun ride! In the end do you really need to be able to run 10s to be happy? Lack of traction in 4th, while I may joke about it, is nothing to sneeze at. 3rd is a bigger problem than 4th but breaking loose at speed like that can get exciting. Ask Scottie sometime what his car is like on the street with real street tires on it I will be switching to DRs on my car full time, like Scottie, just to be able to really enjoy the car during the Summer. Really need to get the Z up and running again. It too is a blast with a totally different power curve. I'll get to it and hope that the CV axles bring me reliability - having a fast car that's dead nuts reliable is REAL fun!
-
Umm, why are you limiting yourself to Stoich closed loop? I can run whatever A/F I want closed loop. The hardest part of closed loop for me since I went to a single turbo and changed the location of the O2 is adjusting the feedback loop so that it's smooth and doesn't "hunt". W/Bs have gotten much cheaper, running without one is nus these days. I also run FAR leaner than 15:1 at times, it depends on the situaiton. Idle is best done richer and cruise you can lean till it begins to lose power or pop. I run something like 50 degrees of timing during some light load cruise too - programmable EFI rox Along with the W/B closed loop (WOT under boost if I want BTW) I also get VSS based boost control, VSS based 2-step, full seuqential, can remove the distributor, and will have accel based traction control within a month or so. The AEM is pretty incredible for the price IMO. I look forward to buying at least one more and installing it on the Z
-
I'm running an AEM on a 2JZGTE and will be running it on a SBC in the future - they have on PNP for the Ford 5.0 already and it's being used on a 351W and 460 too. It has about as many options as a Motec if not more, trac control in the next release, and cost $1400 or so complete. To that I've added some sensors (including EGT) and an FJO W/B. AEM just came out with what ought to be an affordable W/B setup too using an affordable Bosch sensor. There have been some bugs in the system which AEM is stomping as quick as they can, the next release ought to be out soon (I beta for them). The datalogging and analysis package is also damned good with a VERY nicemath library function for you wiz kids I'm not sure it would work on an L28's stock electronics but you could setup a trigger wheel easily enough or use one from another application. You could use 6 coils and fire waste-fire if you wanted, in fact I'll be switching to LS1 coils on my Supra soon. I'd list the features but I'd take a page or so and would probably forget some More info at http://www.aempower.com/bbs or shoot me a note and I'll try to answer the questions. The Supra is my daily and has gone 11.4@124 so far, a friend is deep into the 10s with his using an AEM ECU
-
Tim, I promise you it's NOT a problem you would enjoy. Never mind the potential for breakage, having to watch the throttle application is a PITA. I have that problem with my Supra now although warmer weather has helped SOME. Nothing worse than stepping into it and losing traction just as you start to really get rolling. Be that a V8 or turbo smaller motor it's no fun. My turbo breaks the tires loose on it's minimum setting - 1.2BAR - in the first three gears. When it's cool out 4th can be a little dicey at times too, especially if the road isn't perfect. Losing traction at those speeds is NOT enjoyable. Drag radials will go on the car shortly and should really help now that weather has improved. If I run a weaker spring then I cannot make full boost when I run race gas (2.2BAR) I'm told. I may try it though
-
Scottie - IF you could put the power down would you run more boost at the start or up top? I can adjust my boost vs vehicle speed. Right now I'm not doing it as I'm having some trouble controlling boost and some issues with the VSS sensor. My gut says run it higher up top but I'm not sure. I can also do an ignition retard up top if I wanted using VSS or a switch. Going to the track on the 30th so we'll see how it goes. I think you would love this ECU if you could ever decide to switch away from the OEM unit
-
The TT stick shift cars are, the N/A are all 5spd or Auto. The 5spd works fine with the turbo motor although it's supposedly a bit weaker. It WILL bolt up and turbo IS300SC300 and Supra N/A are able to hold decent power with the 5spd. I think one of the older 5speeds may also bolt up. The 6speed has awesome ratios though, 5th is 1:1, 6th is OD. Way better than the T-56 IMO.
-
Well, -> http://www.blkmgk.com/Development/TestWEB.nsf/PhotoGallery Top of the page - read the article on the 1JZ swap. I'm pretty sure that's where I got the info on the 6spd. My understanding is that the 5spd is shorter than the 6spd. I may be able to measure mine if anyone really cares. If it wasn't in that article it was either on the 1JZ forum on I-supra.com or Supraforums.com I just cannot recall which. Doing this I'd use a JDM 2JZ, a single turbo, some fabbed motor mounts, and whichever trans would fit along with an AEM ECU. I think a smallish turbo would be best as the one I've got would blow the tires off too easily as power came on. My first three gears are useless if I'm not careful I hit the track on the 30th - we'll see how it does on DRs. Anyway, the SR20DET would likely have a powerband that woudl be FUN in a 240Z
-
Do you really think it's that low? Scottie, getting that thing on a dyno would actually be interesting. I'd love to see the shape of the powerband let alone the HP and TQ figures.
-
Heh, my daily driver since you mentioned it An automatic would be quicker on the track though. A friend has an auto with a 4K stall, 10.5s at over 130mph on a mild tune with no lockup. That car could be daily driven if he chose Unfortunatly a 6spd won't fit will in the 240Z, it's too long and the shifter won't work out. A 5spd would fit fine or better yet a TH400 with an OD unit. I cannot imagine how fast that would be with the right turbo in a lightweight Z. That would be a dream for me but the rear IRS would have to be seriously beefed, even Scottie's 'Vette setup has broken now. Ouch!
-
Do you think you'll need to goto an upgraded diff or can the type of diff you were using before be beefed? I know it's tough to lift a wheel with an IRS, only one Supra I know of has done it I figured with your lighter car it might have been easier. A 1.4 60ft is SICK!
-
An advantage to a higher RPM powerband is that you don't blast the tires on launch. That's relative though so if ou make enough power you may still have some problems. You also have to be careful about how violent the power comes on. Having a big turbo spool up at 4K and going from 200RWHP to over 400RWHP in a span of say 800RPM can be a challenge to put down. Scottie mentioned lag, I've been happy to find that while my setup has some lag it can be taken care of with a quick downshift. Yellow lights might catch you lagged but a downshift makes for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride pretty quickly. Honestly, I've come to enjoy a higher RPM powerband. That's one thing the stock L6 had in my car before the 383 swap. I sort of missed that and if I were doing it all over again I might go a slightly different route. I think the SR20 turbo motor would be an excellent choice. It's not the one I would do as I've got another candidate I'd prefer but I don't think it's a bad idea. I think that motor would be pretty awesome in an RX7
-
Kripes, the launch must feel incredible! Lifting the front tires yet? Hope you've got your head against the headrest when that sucker comes out of the hole! Hope you can swap that out easily and that nothing custom got mangled.
-
I'd consider selling mine, it was bought for a different 240Z that I ended up getting rid of and my current Z already has a spoiler so it's just sort of spare right now. Boxing it would be a PITA and I have no idea what shipping would cost or what I would charge for it - will have ot figure out what I paid for it first <shiver>. Have a rear wing too in 'glass that I don't think I'll be putting on this car <shrug>.
-
I have one from MSA in my spare room as sort of a spare (long story). It came shipped in a Xenon box. Like many things MSA sells it's from another vendor with a sizable mark-up. I'm all for supporting a specialized vendor but geez! The unit I've got looks to be decent quality, make sure a decent shop paints it though as urethane can shed paint if you're not careful.

Curious - can he receive magazine subscriptions? If so perhaps we could get together and get him a few to keep him busy reading up on cars? -
Hrm, stock dash is foam right? Maybe try a SMALL amount of expanding insulating foam? Better yet a cap works and looks great

Interesting info on our leadership and those who oppose them
BLKMGK replied to denny411's topic in Non Tech Board
<sigh> Mike's right and he's stated things well. What many people don't seem to understand about Saddam is that he wishes to be some sort of world power in the Arab world. He fancies himself as the saviour of the Arab people and as a leader. So, how does a 2bit dictator get the attention and respect of the world? What one thing forces ALL nations to take notice? Nuclear weapons. Nuclear weapons scare the living crap out of EVERY nation. Pakistan and India both built the bomb for this very same reason. Iraq had a working reactor compliments of the FRENCH until Isreal decided it was a threat and leveled it. To say that pissed him off would be an understatement. So, nuclear weapons are VERY hard to build and expensive - BIO is MUCH easier. These weapons also scare the living crap out of other nations but don't garner the same respect. However they will do a DANDY job of repelling invaders and it could very well have been what stopped us during the last war. You guys do know that Iraq had chem weapons forward deployed during the Gulf War right? The Govt. here at the time denied it - we LIED to the public about it. Only recently, after what 12 years, has this become something the Govt has admitted to. Odd that this hasn't been highlighted more. Ask any trooper who was in the field at the time if they could've withstood a real chem attack, they couldn't. They were using suits issued weeks and weeks before, worn out during the fighting, and were designed for a MUCH more limited usage period. Had chem been used, and Iraq has experimented in it's use, we would've been up the creek. IMO we would have been forced to nuke the bastard and that is something we did NOT want to be forced into. Make no mistake - huge losses of our troops by something as horrific as chem weapons would've pretty much required a nuclear response. If you have seen pics of what those chems did to the Kurds you would understand why this response would've been warrented. To this day there are birth defects still being seen and a large percentage of that population has damaged lung capacity. Make no mistake, Saddam has been working his weapons programs these years despite what he's claimed. Look at the history from the previous inspections. Iraq would deny that they had worked in a weapons area, then evidence would be found and they would hedge a little, then we would catch them red handed and they would back down further. It was a constant game of hide and seek with the Iraqis only admitting to somehting when pinned in a corner about it. Fast forward to today and let's look at the latest round of inspections. Hrm, this looks like a missle with an extendedbanned range. Hrm, this missle looks like it's bomblets could carry chem weapons. Iraq first claimed those missles didn't have the range. They claimed that the bomblets were "standard" bomblet munitions. They claimed that the bomblets had never held chem weapons. Then they claimed that it had never been tested with chem weapons. ALL of these claims were proven false by THIS round of inspectors. NOTHING has changed - it's still hide and seek in a country the size of California. Precision aluminum tubes for missles? We sampled those shipments over time and watched as Iraq refined the requirements from their supplier - this was admitted to during testimony. We have been watching them very carefully and if that loon thought he could hurt us by shipping his poison here make no mistake he would. During the previous round of inspections we found 40+ sites that were dedicated to JUST the nuke program. This was spread throughout the country in an intentional effort to hide it via dispersal. The inspectors at the time, during public interviews, stated point blank that they had no real assurance they got them all. That doesn't even begin to cover the chem and bio weapons programs. MANY of Saddam's plants are designed to be dual use. The baby food factory we hit? Dual use. Russia - selling weapons to Iraq through Syria and Jordon. France - selling them equipment to support their weapons programs. They're already manuevering to garner contracts to help with the rebuild - I laugh. Germany - who do you think engineers and builds all those bunkers? My biggest fear is that Saddam has moved the evidence out of the country on these various programs. He knew we were coming, he knew the inspectors were coming, he's a master at hide and seek. If we remove him hopefully people will speak up and we'll have our evidence. Why no one has listened to the MANY defectors who have detailed his weapons plans is a puzzle to me. Tonight they're reporting that Saddam has authorized his commanders to use chem if we approach Baghdad, is it possible the world might finally listen when he does? We don't want this guy's oil - we want his poison removed. This guy is not only loony enough to make enough bio weapons to kill every livng person on this planet - a FACT - but he's just crazy enough to try and use it. He claims he's destroyed it all and yet has no evidence to back it up and in violation of the UN he didn't have inspectors on site to watch the destruction. But hey, I'm sure we can trust him right? One thing I'll point out - there are people in this world who HATE the United States and will scream for our destruction while wearing Nike tennis shoes logged onto the Internet WE created. These people are angry about their position in this world and brainwashed by the clerics who want nothing more than to gain power themselves. This is what we're fighting against in some parts of the world and Iraq is NOT the only hotspot right now. It's a total goat rope and a real mess. I hope this war ends quickly and that the Iraqi people swallow their pride and allow us to rebuild them. They have huge oil reserves and could support their people better than the Saudis if they could just get a leadership who cared about them. Okay /me tired now. -
A FAQ would be good, I'm actually worrying that yanking the stock stubs will be a bitch - guess we'll see someday. Lots of work to be done back there on my car including a seal it seems - ALL of my gear oil has leaked out the front (sob).

Did u remove the two brackets for the stock tranny
BLKMGK replied to 72zcar's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I removed them - fat ass T-56. No pounding of tunnel - I simply pried it away from the reverse light pigtail with a crowbar gently, no banging, no grinding. I use an air chisel on the mounts, took maybe 45mins MAX. I used the JTR rear mount - it was too wide. Did a little measuring and then had it sectionedrewelded. It was still a tight fit so I pressed it into the tunnel with a floor jack - the floor deformed SLIGHTLY. All in all I didn't have to hack up my tunnel badly and simple removed the mounts with the chisel.... -
If you REALLY want to do it right go DEFI or Apexi ELII - pant pant. I'm still deciding what to do with the heater area on my car too - no gauges or panel installed right now. I want A/C eventually but right now it's a pipe dream. I'm running Autometer gauges in my stock locations now - works great. Try finding another pod that will fit the pillar, Supras have a full replacement pod, maybe a pod from a Mustang. The plastic can probably be reshaped if you're careful...
-
Who says the DOHC 4.6 won't fit? I've posted measurements before - it would be tight but I think it just might fit. BTW - there's an '03 Cobra around here laying down 500RWHP on the stock block. I've seen posts of 700+RWHP on a Kenne Bell blown '03 Cobra...
