I didn't think she was oversees at all. Isn't her desk in D.C.? If she wasn't an operative on foriegn soil then he didn't oust anyone. Where was she when she was called out? Is this really an issue at all? I guess I just don't know enough about it. Then again does anyone really? The left is saying one thing and the right is saying another. Blah blah blah I know.

Headlight and electrical questions
innerware replied to savageskaterkid's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
Well, that is why they did add the tray under the driver side vent for a reason. I would assume that the water entering your engine is the cause for the engine studdering. And the headlights don't have any relays at all. All the load is being pulled from the switch. You could add relays to take the load off of the switch. Check your latest Victoria British catologue as they now sell a headlight relay harness to make our lives a bit easier. -
Tokiko's or KYB's for 280zxt

I have the Tocikos from jdwerks. I love them. My only comparison was stock so can't really say either way. But he is for real and shipped fast. Lowered the car 1" and the ride is nice. Way better than stock. -
Won't it make it hard to make molds once it is mounted to the car? I am sure you will have a bunch of folks wanting some. They are nice.

Always nice to get some work done on the Z. I am always so happy when something gets done I have a smile from ear to ear. Enjoy the tunes.

All very awesome information. I have a friend who has done a bunch of motor swaps, rebuilds etc. He has never worked on early Z's and has never swapped out different year stuff. He has been very skeptical about what I have been telling him could be swapped on the car. All of this information should be a sticky. This has been such great stuff. Thanks everyone very much. Now I know that I can borrow my 78 starter to try and start the 77 if that is the issue. I also now know what year tranny to look for and what to do to make it work well. Hope everyone has a great long weekend, Kyle

I believe they are called plintels or something like that. I too had lost some and was told that they would still work without them. I ended up replacing all of mine though. They were really old and it was time. I found this interesting and very basic. Probably won't help though but just the same: http://autorepair.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=autorepair&zu=http%3A%2F%2Fmy.netian.com%2F%7Esonskl%2Fecu%2Fbosch%2Fbosch.htm

Thanks again for all the great info. I was mostly looking for info like: why the starter was different in the 77 and if the flywheel etc was diff. From what I have gleamed to be true all the trannies will fit with some work, and the A tranny isn't the most desirable. I will look for a later 83 tranny and I will be sure to use all the PP/TO components from the existing setup, or from the donor setup, like stated below. But does anyone know why the starter is different and why it would be if the number of teeth on the flywheel are the same? Did they just use a different manufacturer for that year? Anyway, thanks again, Kyle

my new 77 280Z has a different starter to it than my 78. The bellhousing looks different too. I have also read that a 78-83 5 speed will still bolt up to the 77 motor. Is this right? What else has to be replaced for this to work? The car is a 4 speed and I want to put a 5 speed in it. I will be using my driveshaft from my 78 as it is the new one from msa with removable ujoints. The driveshaft should be the same too right? I am a ways off of pulling the tranny and motor but want the info to start looking for parts. I started the body work yesterday, and it is oh so fun to have a Z to take your time on and not be rushing to get something done on it so you can drive it to work etc. Thanks all, Kyle

So, I got it towed to my place of business yesterday. I work in a converted warehouse and had to have a flat bed so I could roll it onto the shipping dock and roll it into my space. Its not ideal but now it is inside with all my tools and air compressor etc. The car is in amazing shape actually. It has sat for 7 years covered in San Ramon CA. The interior is in remarkable shape and I found the original tool bag unmolested with the original air can. I also have the original factory book that came with the car. The dash has only one small crack and the passenger seat is like new. The headliner and all other interior plastic are like new too. It will be a while before I can really start working on it but at least it is mine now. It is a 77 and I allready own a 78 so I am fairly familiar with the year model. The guy I bought it from has so many other cars and I included two pics of two of the many others he has. He has total a 70's GTO, a 71 charger, the blue truck in the pic, a 2003 mustange convertable, another late 60's charger, and three more unstarted projects in the back of the house. It was crazy. Anyway thought I would share my find as I am really excited and you all can appreciate more than most of my friends, wife, family etc.

Not one hundred percent sure but I think you can take out a spark plug and squirt some oil into it. That's what I am going to do anyway on the engine I just got that has sat for 7 years.

It gets towed Monday if all works out well with the truck. I am getting it on a flat bed to roll it into my shop where I work. I am in a converted warehouse and need to get it on the loading dock to roll it into the shop. I hope it takes the corners down the hallway. Pictures shall follow this week. Who hooo I am excited.

good for you!! I just bought a 400 donor car that is in nicer shape than my driver. I will fix that one now instead. I love a good find.

So as my previous post said I have a new Z. My current Z is a 78 and the new one is a 77. What are the differences between the two? I think that pretty much everything is the same right? Suspension, engine, body? I would like to put my current suspesion from my 78 on it since it is new. Shouldn't be a problem right? Also I will be swapping all the new stuff from my engine. None of this will occur soon since I will be making the body nice first but I would like to double check. I know there are gurus out there that know all the subtle differences and thought I would ask and see. Thanks all and thanks for the continued support. I'll post pics of my new find soon, Kyle

So while trying to find a source locally for a used engine to rebuild I stumbled apon a Z for sale on Craigslist for 300 bucks. I went and saw it today and bought it. I now have two Z's!!! I was thinking that I would just take the engine and use some parts etc and then part the rest out. But really it is in way better shape than mine is. The body is straight, all panel lines are even, the engine had its head rebuilt 20K ago. The interior is really clean. There is only one small crack on the dash board. The carpet looks real nice and newish(compared to mine). It has very little dings etc. There is some surface rust but none too bad at all. The car was to be a project car and was covered up and forgotten about basically 7 years ago. It has a total of 140K original miles on it too. Mine has 300k. It is a 77 and mine is a 78. I just have to pick it up this next week as it is not running. Now that I have an extra Z I can finally take my time to do work on it and make it right. I will be rolling into my work (converted warehouse) and will start body work etc soon.I am just so happy. All the chrome is in nice shape, floor rails straight and clean. The guy had one previous he redid and sold. He has a ton of other cars that were projects like a 60 something truck that was beautiful and a 71 charger. Nice guy who just needs to make room. Anyway I thought I would share. I feel like a real addict now that I have 2 of them. My wife thinks I am crazy.
