  1. Got the bearings. Says nissan on them, can post a picture if someone wants.
  2. Hi, I ordered some outer valve springs from MSA and they are less than 1" in O.D. From what I understand the O.D of the z31 should outer valve springs should be around 1.3"? Similar as L28? MSA says they sent the correct ones. Thanks
  3. Arp rod bolts on the way! Haven't thought about the damper. Plan was to reuse the stock crank pulley.
  4. Thanks! So nissan OEM is good stuff? I have emailed, and if it's the same bearings datsunspirit uses in their builds then I will get them.
  5. Hi, I am buiding a mild race engine and need a set of main and rod bearings. Datsun spirit has a kit for about $200, MSA sells a similar kit for $100. Anyone knows if there is any difference in these? Thanks
  6. Hi, I am building a mild endurance race engine, 4000-6000 RPM will be the working point. It will see 8hours of nonstop 100% racing. Horsepower will be 180-200 but it will see a lot of abuse. Flat tops in F54 block is the plan with either N47 or shaved P79. Shadbolt M455 cam, megasquirt. Machine shop said I needed +20 extra for pistons and rings. The only pistons I could find in +0.02 is the ITM (RY6134-020). Are these good enough? Or should I overbore and get ROSS Forged or something else? Thanks
  7. To me 400hp sounds like a lot. Remember there is no computers saving you. It's probably the same PWR as the GTR,that thing with out the nannies is scary to drive.
  8. This link has some turbo dynos, you could compare against them: http://forums.hybridz.org/topic/123487-compare-your-dyno-sheets-here/ Curious about your suspension plan? If you want to go balls to the walls with a 400hp Z on a track I would get the following: - Cage ($2000-$4000k) - Race seat + harness ($500-$1000k) - 15x10, 245/40/15 tires, $800-$2500 - Coilovers+camber plates+poly bushings+ all the goodies - Big brake kit ($800-) - Strut braces - LSD? Cage stiffens it alot! If you just want to goof around at the track you don't need the above. But you will be much slower than a 200hp Z. What kind of turbo lag do you get with a 400hp L28ET? Sounds terrifying to exit a corner at the limit with 400hp that is hard to control. Sounds like a fun project!
  9. The best NA bang for the buck seems to be: - N47 on flattop pistons - Megasquirt fuel only - Hot cam - If over 200hp then Supra non turbo injectors - Headers / Exhaust recommended but not critical - Head work recommended but expensive The above list is for not optimal from a power perspective but from a labour/cost perspective. Some comments: - It's better to do a shimmed P79 but it will probably be more expensive for you - If you want to make it simple pick a cam with moderate lift (<=0.460"). This doesn't require any new valve springs. - Stock injectors cant handle more than ~200hp, getting supra non trubo injectors seems cheaper then zxt injectors - For moderate RPMs you can live with stock ignition. Have megasquirt control timing adds some complexity. - Head work is very expensive but will get you more HP for big cams. However it's not critical, 290 duration cam with stock head will give more power than stock cam. - If you can afford headers and a decent exhaust then great! Also do some suspension work!
  10. Yes and getting slightly lower seat pressure might not be too bad, specially if you have a cam with a ramp that is not too agressive. Goot point with the coil bind, it should buy you some margin.
  11. Hi, The 300zx outer vavle springs are about 0.1" taller than the L28 valve springs. Could I use them in 0.080" shimmed P79 and not have to deal with with adding shims for the springs? The will be installed at slightly different installed height but this is good since it would add some extra pressure for a mild afermarket cam? Thanks
  12. Interesting, so basically just grind the away the crack? The coolant passage will be a little wider at that point, but maybe that doesn't matter?
  13. At lest you have 66% of your engine running, mine is at 0%.
  14. Hi, I haven't! Didn't know that was a thing. I have tried to look at it with a flashlight but it's very tiny. It has a nice port and valve job. I will have an "expert" examine it, maybe it will justify the cost to fix it. Otherwise I might sell a kidney and get a P79 shimmed, shaved and ported. It's for my crap can race car, so it's a budget racer but still a racer. So it will see high RPM for many many hours non stop.
  15. Put a timing light, on each hand cable. I had great sparks but when I tried with timing light I could see that it was missing. You don't care about actual timing, only that it blinks at same rate on all cylinders. They cost nothing at parts store.
  16. Hi There is a crack in my N47 head in a coolant passage. Can it be repaired? Crack is marked with red arrow.
  17. Hi I am interested in a set of coil overs for my 280zx. Could be the GC or a 240sx swap. My racing series doesn't allow adjustable dampers so I would be OK buying without the dampers. If you have camber plates that would be of interest as well. I have the stock struts if you want to trade or so. I live in Austin,TX.
  18. We do chump and Lemons on a stockish engine. Adding an oil cooler is one more thing that can fail so would be great if it could be avoided! We are running 10w30. Our engine is finally starting to give up after 5x16 hours of racing on a junkyard engine. Haven't done anything besides oil changes. A few races ago we run the engine without any coolant for about 45mins. Oil was squirting out of the dipstick. This caused low compression on 2 cylinders, but it survived more races after that. Who runs a jeep in autocross???
  19. Hi, I do 8 hour non stop racing with my 280zx. I change synthetic oil and filter after every 8 hour race session. I am curious if I should get an oil cooler or not for my 280zx race car. I never have overheating problems or even close to overheating. So far the cooling system has been impeccable. I race in Texas where 100F is not unusual. It's a stockish 2.8 NA. Does it only makes sense to add an oil cooler if the temps are getting high? Or is it always good to have one?
  20. Steve at Rising Sun in Dallas can get one. Never bought anything from them but he seems like a nice guy. http://sehlers.tripod.com/risingsun.html/
  21. Thanks! Doesn't look to bad. I wonder if I can build a S shaped shifter or if that gets weird.
  22. Hi, I am looking into the 240sx swap, it seems like the shifter will be 2" further back? That sounds like a really annoying shifting position? Or does it work ok? It's for my 280zx chumpcar.
  23. 1. You could save your self some trouble and go with the N47 head on the F54 block with flat tops. It's the ghetto way of doing it but several people seem to be alright with it. 2. I have partially done a megasquirt fuel only and it's not that hard if you know a little about computers and electronics. I got the already assembled Microsquirt and their generic harness. If you do it make sure to add a 1k resistor between Negative- and Opto+, otherwise you can fry your MS. Doing timing with MS is a little more complicated because you need to fab stuff for the hal or source a 280zxt dizzy. 3. Some people go with the 300zx NA springs instead of the Isky or Schneider springs for hot street/mild race. There is a debate if the Isky springs are to stiff or not for the typical hot street cam. (I asked Isky but they are very unhelpful, so no luck there. I gave my money to someone else). 4. Cam selection is a jungle, here are some thoughts: - Stay with a < 460 duration if you want to keep things simple and stay with stock drive train. Isky and/or Rebellos has cams for this. Not going to be a hot street. - Over 7000 RPM and stock pistons might be of a concern - Make sure to check both adv. and @0.050". Just adv duration is misleading for colt cams vs isky/schneider - Most people seem to recommend doing a regrind (cheaper to) - Check the dyno threads, sometimes they list what cam they used. It's good to get an understanding for what power curve you get. - 290F or Isky L-490 would be my pick for a hot street and still something you can drive. (I ended up with something less brutal due to my racing regulations). 5. No headers? They are only $300 or so, so might as well. 6. I went with this clutch, http://www.advancedclutch.com/nx1-hdg6
  24. Good point! If that happens what do you do? Longer valve and springs?
