If you put the thicker side on the front that would give you more caster. Then you need to cut a big slot in the top of the tower so that you can slide the bottom piece all the way back and forth, and drill the 4 holes to mount it from the bottom. That's pretty much it. The slotted holes at the corners are supposed to be for a little caster adjustability, but on my 240Z there isn't enough room to move the plate at all. ZX has a big strut top so you should have a little adjustment there too.

Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare = WELFARE
JMortensen replied to pparaska's topic in Non Tech Board
Well he had paid into the system for 50 years and was a social security proponent. I guess he figured that the gov't should help him. He definitely did not save for his own retirement, or have any kind of a back up plan in place when he lost his job. I certainly wasn't in a position to tell him to change his mind on welfare, I was 15 years old at the time. The car he owned was an early 80's diesel Blazer. It was not a nice vehicle by any stretch. He was told that he would have been refused help regardless of what kind of car it was FWIW. There are MANY such success stories. That doesn't change the fact that the gov't shouldn't be involved. Your mother could have been getting help from a church, or a woman's charity for the 4 years just the same. I have a friend who went through college on the Mormon church's dime. Same sort of thing. He had a family and little skills, now he is a computer programmer making 6 figures thanks to an organization that stepped up to help him. That organization DOES NOT HAVE TO BE THE GOV'T. My uncle got help ONLY FROM HIS FAMILY, so he wouldn't have been worse off at all since the gov't did NOTHING for him. I'm sorry if you disagree with me about the gov't's role in society, but I don't think my stance is naive at all. We clearly have a disagreement about the level of gov't interference in our lives that is acceptable. But I have that disagreement with most people so that is not so unusual. It doesn't change the fact that I could have invested 5 TIMES as much money in my IRA this year if I didn't have to pay into social security, and still had money to give to charity. I'm 30 BTW, and I HAVE started thinking about retirement. I would argue that the country is not successful due to government intervention. It is successful DESPITE the gov't intervention. People have the power, not the gov't. I'm sorry that you feel that the gov't has you in their hand. I'm under no such illusions. Look at the countries that have MORE gov't intervention than the US. Some people look to Europe as an example of the way it should be. Lots of entitlements, lots of taxes. It's an anathema to me. Wow you're an elitist. Sounds like the typical democratic argument for social security though: the general public is too stupid to plan for their own retirement. Well I'm not, so what does that do to your theory? Or am I the only non-retarded American? From dictionary.com: Since your so politically savvy, maybe you might try reading the Constitution and telling me where it mentions the "interests of the general public." EDIT--Mistake removed. Many of the New Deal laws were deemed unconstitutional because they were too socialistic and communistic. Social Security and Welfare and Medicare unfortunately were not among the overturned laws, so I will continue to pay into them until we realize the mistake made there too. Won't keep me from arguing against them every chance I get. -
Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare = WELFARE

I disagree with the idea that Social Security and health care should be provided by the government. You want to talk about Fire and Police Departments and infrastructure like roads and such OK, I think we can agree there. But I think there should be systems like welfare and social security, but they should be private enterprises. Once again even HeavyZ has come forward with the idea that the gov't can't spend money wisely (seems to come up in EVERY political argument--ever notice that?). So why are you all so eager to leave your well being in their incompetent hands? My uncle was bankrupted about 15 years ago. Lost his job and due to his age couldn't find another job for over a year. He finally moved in with my parents and I after selling everything he owned but some clothes and a car. He tried really hard to get a job for quite a while, then finally the hardship overcame the pride and he went to the welfare office. He was REFUSED welfare because HE OWNED A CAR. Apparently owning the car meant that he was too wealthy to deserve welfare. Can you imagine a 60 year old 6'5" 280 lb man walking 2 miles to the bus stop to try and find a job? Our family took him and my aunt in and they lived with us for a year until he was able to find a job and move out. So even in the only situation I've ever been around where someone tried to collect welfare it was screwed up and didn't happen. I just think that charities exist to serve these functions, not the gov't. As to our society's throw away elderly, that is a problem that needs to be dealt with, but not by the government. -

Well you're right Mike we diverge at some point there , but I should say that I don't want to chuck the system for those who are already 50+. I'm saying I'd prefer a way for people like me to opt out of it entirely, but I do agree with you that those who have paid into it for their whole lives should be able to get out what they put in. -

And I would disagree with both Mike and Pete in that I think we should just get rid of Medicare, Social Security, and welfare altogether. Those IMO are problems for CHARITY to fix, not the govt. If Bush's plan is this: well that still isn't good enough for me. I'm fully capable of preparing for my own retirement and wish I could opt out of the whole social security system with the understanding that I wouldn't be able to draw on it later. Because preparing for my retirement doesn't require 500,000 bureacrats, and I don't want to pay them to do it. I would love to have enough money to give to charity on a regular basis. BTW Pete I agree with you in that if I am able to retire comfortably I'll not be cashing my $300/month Social Security check. I kinda wouldn't want to send it back to the gov't though. Maybe I'll donate it to charity and thumb my nose at the gov't that way. -

I can't believe I agree with Mike on a welfare issue, but there it is! The people who have paid into this system for 60+ years did so with the understanding that it was THEIR money and they would get it back when they retired. They don't see it as an entitlement because they got a letter every year stating how much they had paid in and how much they could expect to get back. It's not so much an entitlement but more of an agreement. A "New Deal" if you will... I also agree with Mike that OUR generation knows better than to buy into this deal for the most part. Our generation also knows that we can invest in the stock market and bonds and real estate and provide a better return on our investment than letting the government hang on to our money and use it for the world's largest slush fund. That's why I think we need to just end it all together, not like that would ever happen though. I am paying pretty huge amounts of money into the system and expecting at best that I'll be getting a check that might cover my electric bill when I retire. I'm also putting money into my own investments and that is what I plan to use to retire with. The biggest headache for me right now is that I could put away 5 times what I am now into my own private account if I didn't have to pay into Social Security. Then Bush goes and adds prescription drugs to the thing. Another way of looking at it would be to say that if I went to a financial advisor and he told me that I could put in 7% of my gross earnings (self employed so I get to pay mine and the employer's share) per year and make 2% return, I'd tell him to pound sand. But when the gov't does the same thing it is done in the name of our greatest (not really) president, FDR, and we should feel reverence that FDR took it upon himself to provide this crappy return forced savings account for us. BS. It's a crappy return, there are much better ideas out there, and as Mike said most of us already realize that it is a losing proposition so it is just making our own retirement that much harder to plan for. -
I think in the 240SX it changed somewhere along the line... probably right about the same time it changed in the 300ZX, would that be '90??? I got confused because I have a long nose 240SX diff too.

AZ Brakes going on.
JMortensen replied to cygnusx1's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Tim's failure sounds like either the line lock or the operator. Evidently the caliper didn't puke a bunch of fluid or I expect we would have heard as much. Forrest, I agree with you about the usability of the line lock as an emergency brake, but I'm still not buying this parking brake thing. Then again, mine is not a daily driver, so I might be more willing than most to take my chances... -

Really? I thought you didn't set the ebrake... Did the caliper fail? How? -

Did the guy at Wilwood tell you what bad thing would happen to the caliper if it was used as a parking brake? Sounds like a pile of BS to me, I mean you don't need to stand on the brake to keep the car from rolling. If my new calipers are that friggin fragile maybe I'll get rid of em... Seems far more likely he was trying to sell you a mechanical spot caliper. -
Oops forgot about the shortnosed R200.

Need help with a car decision, sell my Z to buy this?
JMortensen replied to a topic in Non Tech Board
You know the smog headaches that these guys are talking about. YOU are going to have the same headaches with anyone you sell your car to. You are legally responsible to make your Z pass smog. I don't know why you're worried about the inspection stations BTW. My understanding is that they basically get a sample as you drive by, then pull you over if they want to have a closer look. Your should be CLEANER than a carbed L24 unless your standing on the gas when you drive by the station. It will also be quieter and I would assume a big loud noise is the other thing they are interested in as you drive by. -
Maybe the 88 300ZX turbo special edition? One year only, and not all turbos were the special edition ones so good luck finding one. They came with VLSD, and I'm pretty sure 3.70's.

Sounds like a slingshot to me...

If the air hammer doesn't work take the pointy tip off of the air hammer and hit it with your BFH instead of the axle itself. You need a big burly air hammer, if you get a little one it may not have the power to drive the thing out.

That would appear to be extruded. Easier to push it out in that shape than bend it into that shape. What the form is, what it is used for, etc is the mystery. I'm familiar with extrusions in aluminum in the context of window framing and such. Good luck finding out exactly what it is.

The problem with heim joint tie rods is the tapered hole that is built into the steer knuckle. The most common way to get around that is to drill out the steer knuckle to 5/8", then run a 5/8" outer rod end. Then the issue becomes attaching it to the stock inner tie rod. I'm not sure, but I seem to remember that the stock inner is 12mm x 1.0 or 12mm x 1.25 threads. Easiest thing to do would be to get a piece of 1" hex aluminum or similar and drill and tap one end for the rack, and the other for the rod end. Not exactly an easy job, but doable. The other major benefit here is that you can then fine tune the bumpsteer at the knuckle.
-
Remove it from the backside and from the outer edge of the flywheel and that will make the biggest difference.
-
Would a 5/8" spacer be safe?
JMortensen replied to datsunlover's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
Doesn't sound unsafe to me. 2nd gen RX7 has 12 x 1.5 studs that are maybe an inch longer than stock 240 studs. Or you can go ARP. 12 x 1.25 stuff should be fairly common. Finding nuts that size shouldn't be a problem. Finding a longer stud probably would be. -
OK, then. No offense meant Crazy280. Another explanation of what I was trying to say before. If I really felt that our troops were doing something horrible, then I wouldn't support the troops. If for example, they were prosecuting a war against redheads and attacked Ireland for that reason, I would not say "I disapprove of the war, but I support the troops" because to do so would conflict with my morals. So I don't understand how someone's morals could allow them to disapprove of a war but approve of the soldiers who fight it. I understand being torn, or not knowing, or having reservations. Also I find that little slips are made here and there and you find the anti-war crowd "accidentally" wishing harm towards our troops. The Daily Show is my favorite TV show, but about 2 weeks ago Jon Stewart had a lady on who had written a "Bush is the devil" book and when they were talking about the recent success in the Middle East and their despair at Bush's success, Jon said something to the effect of "Well we can still hold out hope for the insurgency in Iraq." He really did. That's the kind of thing that really gets me I guess.

If you move the control arm out .75" and then the front wheels will be severely toed in. So you need the lengthen the tie rods to match the control arms, and then the question is if there are enough threads to do so, which was the issue Terry raised. I'm sure the other guy took the bend out of the outer tie rod to lengthen it, but like buZy said, that might not be enough. I'm still thinking that moving it out .75" is a hell of a lot, and you might get more negative camber than you bargained for.

Well I could be wrong, but I distinctly remember the flare came back in towards the body line behind the tires front and rear, and that it didn't meet very nicely in that area. These are totally flat sticking out behind the tire, like the IMSA flare. Did a little searching: http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=89290&highlight=steel+flare Unless they changed them, I don't think they're VB flares.
