Think of the millions of animals that die during each swallow... Jon

You're GF is a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and they have a much easier time than the vegans (no animal products whatsoever). Still, it has to be done right for them to be healthy, and I have yet to see that comparison with one twin vegan and one twin an omnivore that would bear out my hypothesis that the omnivore would be the better weightlifter. And I still haven't seen the "healthy" lacto ovo. Skinny yes. Healthy no. But that is just my limited experience talking, and as I said before, I know that it can be done right. Jon

Does your friend take protein supplements? You CAN get enough protein from plant sources in supplement form, but it's hard (not impossible) to do without the supplements. BTW--my wife is an RD working on her masters right now. Together we had to convince her lacto-ovo vegetarian sister whose eyes were all sunk in and who looked like she was an extra from "Night of the Living Dead" to eat meat again about a year ago, so I'm not just spewing out my bottom end... and the sis-in-law looks great again. And sure cats and dogs will eat plants, but I just don't see them "craving" leafy greens. Houseplants are a novelty, and the poisonous ones can get your pet a little high, and anything that comes off a human's plate or from a human's hand is fair game as far as most pets are concerned, but you never hear about lions in Africa getting into a farmer's field and killing all the lettuce, now do you? Attacking livestock, now that's another story. Or the mountain lions coming out of the hills in SoCal and attacking people's vegetables while they are unloading groceries from the trunk of the car. It's always the cat, or the dog, or the baby. That's what cats crave. Just trying to be realistic about the whole thing. Jon

If the master is above the wheel cylinder, then it will gravity bleed. Jon

Your opinions on my fuel cell and mounting... UPDATE 1/16

The pics are small but look at this: http://www.guyons.com/tour_rx7_challenge.html I really like the way the whole thing is sealed off from the passenger compartment. Same idea could be done to the side to fill from the stock location. Jon -
On taking a closer look at the second pic may just be a 4 pinion open diff. Kinda looks like pinion teeth in there... Need more/better pics to be sure. Jon

I'm not sure what the VLSD looks like, but that definitely has 2 cross pins which leads me to believe 4 pinion gears, and the 2 piece case means there is something other than just spiders in there. Looks LSD to me... Jon

PETA has a weightlifting commercial on TV here in WA (may be national). Kinda funny. Looks like they're trying to dispell the "myths" about sickly anemic vegetarians. The only anemic and sickly vegetarians I've ever met were ALL of them... Supposedly it can be done right, but I haven't seen it yet. Someday I'm sure I'll hear the words "Look at those verile and buff vegetarians" but I'm not holding my breath. I figure I have both eyes in the front of my head and canine teeth for a reason. BTW--new cat food commercial "And blah blah gives my cat the green vegetables that he craves..." Whaaaa????? Yeah, right. I always see cats dragging in their latest kill; a head of lettuce, or kale. Happens all the time. Jon

If you're bound and determined to do it you may want to check with the Delorean guys. I'm sure you already know that that is the engine they used, but you didn't mention it so I thought I'd throw that in there for ya, just in case. Good luck. I'm hoping to eat crow on this one... Jon

Tony's got a good point. I've seen the jet blocks come loose on other people's Mikunis. Never happened to me because the guy who taught me always told me to put them in tight. Still think it wouldn't cause that type of problem over such a narrow rpm band, but definitely a common Mikuni issue. Jon
-
What datsunlover said. My experience with that engine was in talking to the experienced mechanics at a Volvo dealership I worked at. Whenever one of those POS's came in, there was a fight about who was going to be forced to work on it. Supposedly REALLY hard to rebuild. A buddy of mine has a 2.3 240 Turbo wagon and is pushing 300hp with no ill effects. Pretty cool, he got a Quaiffe style limited slip by TracTech and put that in the little Dana 30 out back. Fun wagon... Jon

I just looked in "The new Encyclopedia of the Dog" and that does look a lot like a Red Heeler, maybe a little Border Collie thrown in the mix. Sweet dog, congrats. Jon

You should be on the main air and fuel jets at those rpms. Seems kinda weird that you would have a hesitation over such a narrow rpm range if it were a jetting problem. Makes me think it might be ignition related. Does it do this regardless of whether you floor it to get to those rpms or whether you gradually get there at say a steady 3/4 throttle? That would eliminate the accelerator pumps completely, but I think they're pretty much done at that rpm anyway... Are these new carbs for you? Do you have all the same jets in every jet block? That would be a pretty bad mistake, but it's worth checking if these are new-to-you carbs. What kind of ignition are you running, and when was the last time you did a tune up with plugs/cap/rotor/wires? Jon

Pure speculation here, but maybe the crank pulley came loose and wobbled on the end of the crank, and knurling, like John B said, brought it back to the proper size. Jon

Alternate slave cylinder? ****VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!***********
JMortensen replied to fl327's topic in Drivetrain
One thing to keep in mind is the possibility of damaging the fork. I've seen a few split at the ball pivot with heavier pressure plates. I would think that having more throw would make this failure more likely. Jon -
Chattanooga people, can you splain this Camaro around pole?
JMortensen replied to opie's topic in Non Tech Board
Looks like it fell off a train... seen stuff like that before. Way back in high school we had a bunch of donated cars that came from dealerships. We had a Toy 4x4 which was FLAT from the hoodline to the bedline. That one for sure fell off a train. Also saw one that fell off a car hauler at a dealership I worked at. Jon -
I bent the stock mounting tabs by hand and used large hose clamps around the body of the gauges and the mounting tabs on the 5" gauges. Seems like a good alternative to stuffing them in with cardboard. On the 2 5/8", I can tell you what NOT to do. I had a plate welded in with the 2 5/8" holes cut out. This was much harder than it needed to be. IIRC, zhome.com has a tech article about somehow switching the bezels and getting them into the dash. I read it about 6 months after doing my dash. :malebitchslap: DOH! HTH, Jon

Heat Shielding Really Necessary?
JMortensen replied to zguy95135's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
Gramercyjam--do you have insulators between the carbs and the manifold? Seems like your carbs are WAY too heat sensitive. I had vapor lock with the SU's at one point, but never with the Mikunis and I've been out in 114* heat (but I'll NEVER do that again). FWIW-I haven't gotten around to making a new heat shield for my Mikunis, but I had a good one on my SU's that I made. I don't honestly know that there was too much of a difference. Much bigger gains were made when I removed the mechanical pump and the metal fuel rail, which were both heating up the fuel a lot. That solved my vapor lock problem with the SU's, which I only had on one occasion at Streets of Willow when it was about 105*. Jon -
Anyone consider installing them with butyl tape instead of weatherstripping? Seems like it would be a lot easier, and would still seal well. Any windshield installers out there? Is this a dumb idea? Don't know how to make it look good, but sealing well shouldn't be a problem... Jon

Need help! Car overheating!
JMortensen replied to Lostsol's topic in Trouble Shooting / General Engine
IIRC, the stock temp sender is in the thermostat housing. Before you do ANYTHING I suggest that you find another way to check that the temp gauge is accurate. I would venture a guess to say that it is not. I switched from the stock temp gauge to an Autometer mechanical gauge, and there was a HUGE difference in what the gauge read, with no other changes. If it gets hot again, try to find a shop with a pyrometer (if you don't own one yourself) and see if they can verify the temps. IME thermostats stick open or stick shut, they don't usually fail in a way that causes the car to run hot one day and cold the next. Jon -
So what's the deal with KA24's and VG30's ticking really bad after an autox run? I know its the lifters, but that doesn't make any sense if the lifters pump to a particular pressure then hold it. Maybe the lifters lose their pressure when they slow down for a corner and rpms drop??? Just curious, not trying to keep the argument going... Jon

Here's some sick cat humor (PETA members don't bother). http://www.richsalter.btinternet.co.uk/cks2/index.html Jon -
Could also have been a halfshaft joint binding... Jon

Spider gears would make themselves known when you tried to turn, but not going straight. A pinion gear would clunk about every 3 feet, and a ring gear will clunk about every 10 feet while going straight. It should be pretty easy to tell which one is gone. Doesn't really matter though. You still have to pull it apart or replace it no matter which is bad. Jon
