  1. Can't you cut and weld up a couple of KA intake manifolds as well? I know it won't work for the exhaust side, but should work for intake, unless it is tapered. Jon
  2. Yeah, I hear you. I agree that it is pretty funny that people would be afraid of microwaved food but not of a cell phone. It's not like you take the food out and it's still producing radio waves... I've know a few engineers who worked for cell phone companies, and I don't have one, so I'll let that speak for itself. My wife has one and we use it for "emergencies." Jon
  3. The E31 is great, but you need to install bigger valves and unshroud them to take advantage of it. It also has a really bad tendency to erode the coolant passages that the later heads don't seem to have, so you may want to double check yours. You may also consider milling a P90 .080 and going that route (which is what I would have done in retrospect). I've got a F54 with flat tops and E31 and an American cams regrind .490/280 cam. I wish I had a little more duration. .490/280 is not that radical IMO, especially considering your very high compression that you will see when yours is done. Mine idles pretty smooth, for what it is. All the cams I have seen tend to go from .490/280 to somewhere in the .560/310 neighborhood. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground cam like this .500/290. Have you found that grind, or is that what you are looking for? I'd be interested to know who has it... I would prefer lower gears for autox. I've got 3.70's and am looking to go to 4.11 for just that reason, so I think you're on the right track there. You can probably save yourself some gas $$$ by cutting the race gas with premium unleaded. My setup requires about 95 octane, but I think I could get by on 92 if I had a little more duration. I seriously doubt that you are needing 110, or that you'll need it with the new motor. If you mixed the 110 with 92 50/50, that gives you what, 101 octane? That should be plenty I'd imagine. You can keep cutting it until you find out what octane is necessary, and save some cash. Jon
  4. The world would be a much happier place if we did cancer testing on sharks. On the same lines, the tobacco industry did a study in which the gave rats HUGE amounts of celery and they got cancer. Same thing with milk. Jon
  5. I am definitely not an electrical engineer, but I've diagnosed battery drains before. Easiest way to narrow it down is to disconnect the neg terminal and attach your voltmeter to the cable and the battery post. Set it to milliamps, and you can see the draw. Then start pulling fuses, and when you pull one and the draw drops, you will at least know which circuit the draw is on. Then you can trace it down from there. HTH, Jon
  6. One more thing since David brought it up. On my ex-bosses widebody Porsche it was necessary to reinforce the fiberglass, so they used 3/8" aluminum fuel line. They just cut to length, pinched the ends, and drilled holes for riveting the flares to the fuel line and the fuel line to the tub. That worked for 150+ mph with race weight (thin) flares, but his air dam was just a modified stock 911 air dam. I think this would work for a fiberglass air dam, but probably not a urethane since it is already less rigid and much heavier. Jon
  7. I think Auxilary has reinforced his. I have a "Flex Dam" which had a rubber skirt, and I was unaware that it was flapping up when I was going 90+. Someone watching me on the front straight at Buttonwillow informed me, and I switched out the rubber skirt for plastic lawn edging which solved my problems. Jon
  8. You're right Denny, but radio waves are radiation, in much the same way that light from a light bulb is radiation. Saw that Mythbusters too. My wife was going insane when I would put AOL cd's in the microwave (fun 2 second light show) and I made her watch just to see that I wasn't going to blow up the microwave. Also, I have personally experienced the super heated water thing from water straight out of the tap. Doesn't have to be distilled like they said in the show. Jon
  9. Have you tried gasket remover from the auto parts store? Seriously nasty stuff, but it works. I wouldn't get any inside the carb or on any rubber parts though. Jon
  10. OK guys thanks, appreciate the 1st hand experience. EDIT--Davy, I know there is a lot of talk about how dumb the ricer wings are, but the proof is in the pudding. I was out watching the American Iron series at an Open Track event, and the fastest stang was a coupe not fastback with a gigantic ricer wing on the back. I know its ugly, but getting it high enough to get clean air has a purpose... don't know if I could stand to drive it on the street though... Jon
  11. IMO it is ALWAYS necessary to put weights on the outside of the tire to get a correct balance. Inside only = static balance. Both sides = dynamic balance. For rims without lips (man I hate those) the wheel weights can be stuck on near the spokes towards the outside to get the same basic effect. I had a similar problem where I took my car in and the guy didn't want to put weights on the outside of my rims because it looks bad. He had owned his tire shop for 20 years, and was sure that since the machine was a "Dynamic Balancer 4000" or whatever that his machine would ONLY do a dynamic balance. I tried to convince him otherwise, but he started to get pissed off. So I drove the car away and came back an hour later and actually got into a pretty big argument before he took the wheels off and fixed it. They had a really bad wiggle at 65 mph to 75 mph in my case. Jon
  12. A buddy of mine gives me the "but I wear a headset" crap. So great, now you're torching your gonads... much better option... What reason could anyone give for not eating food out of a microwave. Do they think the radiation used to cook the food is nuclear or something??? Jon
  13. Which design is the most FUNCTIONAL? That's what I wanna know, might help Mike out too. I always wondered if the whale tail or the big duck tail spoiler like Porsche 911's have can actually produce a decent amount of downforce, and it seems like the aero drag cost is pretty high to do it, especially the duck tail. Terry? Anyone? BTW Terry, that red car does look awesome. Eye candy for sure. So does the current project. Jon
  14. J--I wasn't trying to say I was anti-tolulene, just that the octane booster amounts aren't enough to take you from 92 to 97 octane. I've been running tolulene quite awhile now too. Had good results with both. Spork--how much gas does a can treat? 16 gal? What's in it? Do you know? Do you have any mag articles or reviews on it? Sounds interesting... Jon
  15. Here's a better link. Sorry about that ERK: http://www.geocities.com/kenshobnob/
  16. Never heard of Torco, but I would like to point out that when you get that little can of octane boost and it says your octane will jump 5 points they mean from 92 octane to 92.5 octane. They are basically selling an 8 oz can of tolulene or xylene or a mix, but you need a lot more than that to make a significant difference in the overall octane of a tank of gas. Jon
  17. The 280ZX flange works. You would need to switch out the flange on the 300ZX diffs. Jon
  18. Here's a link to a guy who builds and sells them. Not sure if he's on the list. http://www.geocities.com/kenshobnob/Rotisserie_Gallery.html Jon
  19. For the distributor block off another idea is to find a freeze plug that fits in the distributor hole and tap it in. A friend of mine did that and it worked well. I think he also cut the top of the shaft to remove any excess rotating mass (probably got 1/1000 hp out of that one). Very very very nice job! Jon
  20. OK, I think I'm done after this, unless something really interesting is said, but here goes something which I think is REALLY germaine to this discussion. I just got off the phone with a friend who is really anti-Patriot act and works in the IT field. His had 4 points to make: 1. The packet sniffing method used by Carnivore can be used to manipulate the information sent. If the FBI/CIA whoever can look at the packets you send to determine if there is "inappropriate" content, then they can obviously view photos or look for those hidden watermarks that might contain hidden messages. If they can view these files, it would not be hard to ADD watermarks or CHANGE the photos using Photoshop or the Gimp or some such software, then this could be used as "proof" that someone was a terrorist, or a child pornographer, etc. If you are an enemy of the state, this COULD be used against you. Not saying it's likely, just possible. 2. We don't really know what we're downloading. If you've ever gone to a webpage and seen it loading even though it looked as though the page was done, there is a distinct possibility that there were hidden pictures or text that you were downloading. A simple way of getting illegal crap onto someone's computer is to put an illegal photo or terrorist message on a webpage in the form of a jpeg that is shown by the website as a 1 pixel by 1 pixel jpeg. The viewer would never see this, and would have no idea that they had encountered this contraband, but it would be residing in their internet cache. If a person was then under suspicion by the govt, and the govt was to look at their hard drive there might be hundreds of these pictures there, even though the person had no knowledge. 3. If you've ever gotten a spam email and had a pic of a woman and a donkey or any other illegal crap on it, this too could be used against you. Even though you may have had no intention to view such things, and may have immediately deleted them, all you have done is delete the NAME of the file, and allowed that disk space to be written over. If it is not written over before some govt agency comes and confiscates your computer, then guess what... you've got contraband on your computer. 4. A cracker or group of crackers (not white guys, but the IT correct term for "bad hacker") could develop the same technology and use it to do any of the above. I would think that this would be pretty good motivation for a terrorist organization. What better way to hide than to send out a flood of false incriminating evidence to confuse the govt. In his words, the govt doesn't fully understand the technology they are using with these methods of checking for wrongdoing, so they leave themselves open to the abuse of the technology. Jon
  21. I would venture a guess to say that my right to not privacy but "security in my effects" if that pleases JohnC has most likely been violated. The most irritating thing to me is that I will never know for sure, unless they come and arrest me. If you read this page: http://www.eff.org/Privacy/Surveillance/Terrorism/20011031_eff_usa_patriot_analysis.html you can see that there is a distinct possibility that since I have spent the last day or so searching for "terrorism, terrorist organizations, patriot act, nazi, concentration camp, jew, islam" etc, etc, that I have probably been surveilled. Besides the question you ask is very reminiscent of this quote: It is not wise IMO to wait until the govt is on YOUR doorstep to start protesting. Here in Seattle we've had wackos protesting on street corners for OVER A YEAR now about terrorism and the war in Iraq and even Afghanistan. While I don't miss an opportunity to flip them off as I drive by, I think that they are doing the right thing as citizens of a democratic country, so I always smile while I give them the finger. I'm glad to hear that your govt job gives you a feeling of security or a feeling that we're doing the right thing to protect our citizens from terrorists. I don't doubt the intentions of the current administration at all. I think they have a tough job to do, and they are doing the best they can, which has been IMO a much preferable response to the "stick your head in the sand and pray the UN can take care of it all" stance of our European friends and quite a few of our own. There was a lot of criticism of people who were concerned about the war, and they were called unpatriotic and told to stand behind the president, because he's "our Commander-in-Chief". No, he's not. He's the MILITARY'S Commander-in-Chief. Not mine. So it's up to the rest of us who aren't supposed to blindly follow to analyze what he's doing, and when something happens that we don't like, we have a responsibility to speak up. I saw an interview with a FBI agent that said almost exactly what denny411 said BTW. I think his quote was "If you told me that you were going to come into my house and get my wallet in 6 months, and it was totally unavoidable, I'd have that wallet so well hidden you'd NEVER find it." Jon
  22. Sounds like piston slap to me. Probably goes away entirely under load, but if you drive at a cruise it is there, and quieter when hot than cold. Jon
  23. Here's a little something from someone we like to call the Father of the Constitution: Jon
  24. Although this is just one definition, I think it's a pretty good one. It fits, as you said, both Palestine and Israel. I don't care to open that can of worms either (the Palestine issue). Jon
