  1. One more thing since David brought it up. On my ex-bosses widebody Porsche it was necessary to reinforce the fiberglass, so they used 3/8" aluminum fuel line. They just cut to length, pinched the ends, and drilled holes for riveting the flares to the fuel line and the fuel line to the tub. That worked for 150+ mph with race weight (thin) flares, but his air dam was just a modified stock 911 air dam. I think this would work for a fiberglass air dam, but probably not a urethane since it is already less rigid and much heavier. Jon
  2. I think Auxilary has reinforced his. I have a "Flex Dam" which had a rubber skirt, and I was unaware that it was flapping up when I was going 90+. Someone watching me on the front straight at Buttonwillow informed me, and I switched out the rubber skirt for plastic lawn edging which solved my problems. Jon
  3. You're right Denny, but radio waves are radiation, in much the same way that light from a light bulb is radiation. Saw that Mythbusters too. My wife was going insane when I would put AOL cd's in the microwave (fun 2 second light show) and I made her watch just to see that I wasn't going to blow up the microwave. Also, I have personally experienced the super heated water thing from water straight out of the tap. Doesn't have to be distilled like they said in the show. Jon
  4. Have you tried gasket remover from the auto parts store? Seriously nasty stuff, but it works. I wouldn't get any inside the carb or on any rubber parts though. Jon
  5. OK guys thanks, appreciate the 1st hand experience. EDIT--Davy, I know there is a lot of talk about how dumb the ricer wings are, but the proof is in the pudding. I was out watching the American Iron series at an Open Track event, and the fastest stang was a coupe not fastback with a gigantic ricer wing on the back. I know its ugly, but getting it high enough to get clean air has a purpose... don't know if I could stand to drive it on the street though... Jon
  6. IMO it is ALWAYS necessary to put weights on the outside of the tire to get a correct balance. Inside only = static balance. Both sides = dynamic balance. For rims without lips (man I hate those) the wheel weights can be stuck on near the spokes towards the outside to get the same basic effect. I had a similar problem where I took my car in and the guy didn't want to put weights on the outside of my rims because it looks bad. He had owned his tire shop for 20 years, and was sure that since the machine was a "Dynamic Balancer 4000" or whatever that his machine would ONLY do a dynamic balance. I tried to convince him otherwise, but he started to get pissed off. So I drove the car away and came back an hour later and actually got into a pretty big argument before he took the wheels off and fixed it. They had a really bad wiggle at 65 mph to 75 mph in my case. Jon
  7. A buddy of mine gives me the "but I wear a headset" crap. So great, now you're torching your gonads... much better option... What reason could anyone give for not eating food out of a microwave. Do they think the radiation used to cook the food is nuclear or something??? Jon
  8. Which design is the most FUNCTIONAL? That's what I wanna know, might help Mike out too. I always wondered if the whale tail or the big duck tail spoiler like Porsche 911's have can actually produce a decent amount of downforce, and it seems like the aero drag cost is pretty high to do it, especially the duck tail. Terry? Anyone? BTW Terry, that red car does look awesome. Eye candy for sure. So does the current project. Jon
  9. J--I wasn't trying to say I was anti-tolulene, just that the octane booster amounts aren't enough to take you from 92 to 97 octane. I've been running tolulene quite awhile now too. Had good results with both. Spork--how much gas does a can treat? 16 gal? What's in it? Do you know? Do you have any mag articles or reviews on it? Sounds interesting... Jon
  10. Here's a better link. Sorry about that ERK: http://www.geocities.com/kenshobnob/
  11. Never heard of Torco, but I would like to point out that when you get that little can of octane boost and it says your octane will jump 5 points they mean from 92 octane to 92.5 octane. They are basically selling an 8 oz can of tolulene or xylene or a mix, but you need a lot more than that to make a significant difference in the overall octane of a tank of gas. Jon
  12. The 280ZX flange works. You would need to switch out the flange on the 300ZX diffs. Jon
  13. Here's a link to a guy who builds and sells them. Not sure if he's on the list. http://www.geocities.com/kenshobnob/Rotisserie_Gallery.html Jon
  14. For the distributor block off another idea is to find a freeze plug that fits in the distributor hole and tap it in. A friend of mine did that and it worked well. I think he also cut the top of the shaft to remove any excess rotating mass (probably got 1/1000 hp out of that one). Very very very nice job! Jon
  15. OK, I think I'm done after this, unless something really interesting is said, but here goes something which I think is REALLY germaine to this discussion. I just got off the phone with a friend who is really anti-Patriot act and works in the IT field. His had 4 points to make: 1. The packet sniffing method used by Carnivore can be used to manipulate the information sent. If the FBI/CIA whoever can look at the packets you send to determine if there is "inappropriate" content, then they can obviously view photos or look for those hidden watermarks that might contain hidden messages. If they can view these files, it would not be hard to ADD watermarks or CHANGE the photos using Photoshop or the Gimp or some such software, then this could be used as "proof" that someone was a terrorist, or a child pornographer, etc. If you are an enemy of the state, this COULD be used against you. Not saying it's likely, just possible. 2. We don't really know what we're downloading. If you've ever gone to a webpage and seen it loading even though it looked as though the page was done, there is a distinct possibility that there were hidden pictures or text that you were downloading. A simple way of getting illegal crap onto someone's computer is to put an illegal photo or terrorist message on a webpage in the form of a jpeg that is shown by the website as a 1 pixel by 1 pixel jpeg. The viewer would never see this, and would have no idea that they had encountered this contraband, but it would be residing in their internet cache. If a person was then under suspicion by the govt, and the govt was to look at their hard drive there might be hundreds of these pictures there, even though the person had no knowledge. 3. If you've ever gotten a spam email and had a pic of a woman and a donkey or any other illegal crap on it, this too could be used against you. Even though you may have had no intention to view such things, and may have immediately deleted them, all you have done is delete the NAME of the file, and allowed that disk space to be written over. If it is not written over before some govt agency comes and confiscates your computer, then guess what... you've got contraband on your computer. 4. A cracker or group of crackers (not white guys, but the IT correct term for "bad hacker") could develop the same technology and use it to do any of the above. I would think that this would be pretty good motivation for a terrorist organization. What better way to hide than to send out a flood of false incriminating evidence to confuse the govt. In his words, the govt doesn't fully understand the technology they are using with these methods of checking for wrongdoing, so they leave themselves open to the abuse of the technology. Jon
  16. I would venture a guess to say that my right to not privacy but "security in my effects" if that pleases JohnC has most likely been violated. The most irritating thing to me is that I will never know for sure, unless they come and arrest me. If you read this page: http://www.eff.org/Privacy/Surveillance/Terrorism/20011031_eff_usa_patriot_analysis.html you can see that there is a distinct possibility that since I have spent the last day or so searching for "terrorism, terrorist organizations, patriot act, nazi, concentration camp, jew, islam" etc, etc, that I have probably been surveilled. Besides the question you ask is very reminiscent of this quote: It is not wise IMO to wait until the govt is on YOUR doorstep to start protesting. Here in Seattle we've had wackos protesting on street corners for OVER A YEAR now about terrorism and the war in Iraq and even Afghanistan. While I don't miss an opportunity to flip them off as I drive by, I think that they are doing the right thing as citizens of a democratic country, so I always smile while I give them the finger. I'm glad to hear that your govt job gives you a feeling of security or a feeling that we're doing the right thing to protect our citizens from terrorists. I don't doubt the intentions of the current administration at all. I think they have a tough job to do, and they are doing the best they can, which has been IMO a much preferable response to the "stick your head in the sand and pray the UN can take care of it all" stance of our European friends and quite a few of our own. There was a lot of criticism of people who were concerned about the war, and they were called unpatriotic and told to stand behind the president, because he's "our Commander-in-Chief". No, he's not. He's the MILITARY'S Commander-in-Chief. Not mine. So it's up to the rest of us who aren't supposed to blindly follow to analyze what he's doing, and when something happens that we don't like, we have a responsibility to speak up. I saw an interview with a FBI agent that said almost exactly what denny411 said BTW. I think his quote was "If you told me that you were going to come into my house and get my wallet in 6 months, and it was totally unavoidable, I'd have that wallet so well hidden you'd NEVER find it." Jon
  17. Sounds like piston slap to me. Probably goes away entirely under load, but if you drive at a cruise it is there, and quieter when hot than cold. Jon
  18. Here's a little something from someone we like to call the Father of the Constitution: Jon
  19. Although this is just one definition, I think it's a pretty good one. It fits, as you said, both Palestine and Israel. I don't care to open that can of worms either (the Palestine issue). Jon
  20. I don't agree that Iraq was not involved in terror. When Saddam pays the families of "martyrs" $25K for suicide bombings in Palestine, I'd say that's involvement. Jon
  21. They must be a "para state" group... They got nixed from the updated list. Jon
  22. OK, I feel better now. I've figured out that all we have to do is get rid of the following terrorist organizations before the govt stops reading my email: EDIT--The previous list was inaccurate. It included "para-states". Here's one of terrorist orgs: Abu Nidal Organization (ANO) Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade Arab Revolutionary Brigades Armed Islamic Group 'Asbat al-Ansar Aum Shinrikyo Aum Supreme Truth (Aum) Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) Black September Communist Party of Philippines (CPP/NPA) Dev Sol Devrimci Sol (Revolutionary Left) Egyptian Islamic Jihad Euzkadi Ta Askatasuna Fatah Revolutionary Council Al-Gama'a al-Islamiyya HAMAS (Islamic Resistance Movement) Harakat ul-Mujahidin (HUM) Hizballah (Party of God) The Islamic Group (IG) Islamic Jihad Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) Jaish-e-Mohammed (JEM) (Army of Mohammed) Al-Jihad Jihad Group Jemaah Islamiya (JI) Kach and Kahane Chai Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LT) (Army of the Righteous) Lashkar I Jhangvi (LJ) The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) The Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MEK or MKO) Muslim Iranian Students Society National Council of Resistance National Liberation Army (ELN)--Colombia The National Liberation Army of Iran New People's Army (NPA) Organization of the Oppressed on Earth Palestine Islamic Jihad (PIJ) Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) The People's Mujahedin of Iran (PMOI) Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command (PFLP-GC) Al-Qaida Real IRA (RIRA) Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) Revolutionary Justice Organization Revolutionary Nuclei Revolutionary Organization 17 November (17 November) Revolutionary Organization of Socialist Muslims Revolutionary People's Liberation Party/Front (DHKP/C) Sangillan Force The Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC) Sendero Luminoso (Shining Path, SL) Talaa'al-Fateh True IRA United Self-Defense Forces/Group of Colombia (AUC) World Tamil Association (WTA) World Tamil Movement (WTM) 3rd October Organization 15 May Organization Alex Boncayao Brigade (ABB) Algerian Terrorism Anti-Imperialist International Brigade (AIIB) Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) Army for the Liberation of Rwanda (ALIR) Al-'Asifa Al-Fatah Chukaku-Ha (Nucleus or Middle Core Faction) Continuity Army Council Continuity Irish Republican Army (CIRA) Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) Ellalan Force Federation of Associations of Canadian Tamils (FACT) First of October Antifascist Resistance Group (GRAPO) Force 17 Former Armed Forces (ex-FAR) Interahamwe Irish Republican Army (IRA) Jamaat ul-Fuqra Japanese Red Army (JRA) Khmer Rouge Lautaro Popular Rebel Forces (FRPL) Lautaro Youth Movement (MJL) Loyalist Volunteer Force (LVF) Manuel Rodriguez Patriotic Front (FPMR) Morazanist Patriotic Front (FPM) National Liberation Army (ELN) - Bolivia / Nestor Paz Zamora Commission (CNPZ) Orange Volunteers (OV) The Orly Group People Against Gangsterism and Drugs (PAGAD) Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Party of Democratic Kampuchea Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-Special Command (PFLP-SC) Popular Struggle Front (PSF) Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) Provos Puka Inti (Sol Rojo, Red Sun) Red Army Faction (RAF) Red Brigades (BR) Red Hand Defenders (RHD) Revolutionary People's Struggle (ELA) Revolutionary United Front (RUF) Sikh Terrorism Sol Rojo Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) Tupac Katari Guerrilla Army (EGTK) Al Ummah United Popular Action Movement (MAPU/L) Zviadists Jon
  23. Well John, I guess the fact that you have more trust in the govt than I do is really the issue. By the way with regards to I think we're still paying for that one... EDIT--Mike, you're EXACTLY RIGHT. That's why I take issue with this. If this were a well defined conflict and the govt could say, this will end when Bin Laden is captured or something to that effect I might be able to stand by and let it happen. But terrorism has existed since the dawn of mankind, so when is this rights "curtailment" supposed to end??? Jon
  24. So by that line of thinking you wouldn't mind the government getting into every aspect of your life, because hey, you're not doing anything wrong. Well I disagree with that line of thinking. The more the government intrudes into our lives, the more easily they can control us. The more rights we give up voluntarily, the less able we are to keep them from TAKING away our rights in the future. The fact that the government is trying to "protect" us now in no way dismisses the possibility that they may not be trying to "protect" us later. The way that Germans were sucked into the Holocaust by Hitler was first the demonizing of particular groups, gypsies, the mentally retarded or insane, etc. Then they started rounding them up not for trips to concentration camps where they would be used as slave laborers and exterminated, but they were being "relocated". Incidentally, they did this with the elderly too. They would be "relocated" to a govt facility, then their families would be notified that their parents or grandparents had "unexpectedly passed away." With regards to data mining: That's directly from the ACLU website, BTW. I'm NOT a big fan of the ACLU. I think they're mostly out to punish religious people and protect criminals. But this use of information goes against the ideals used to draft the Constitution, most directly the idea of "innocent until proven guilty". Here's another example of how information of this type can be misused in a BIG way: I'm NOT calling Bush or anyone in the govt a nazi. Not at all. In fact, if the election were held tomorrow, Bush would have my vote. I just want to bring to people's attention the possibility that govt programs that get into your personal business are not a good idea, not because they might figure out that you're a child pornographer, but because 99.99999% of the information they gain isn't related to child porn or terrorism. What they will do with the rest of that info is entirely unknown, but it CAN be used for less than altruistic purposes. Here's a timeline of Nazis taking power in Germany. Remember, Nazis were the German socialist party, dedicated to making life better for Germans and improving their economy in the post WWI era, which they did. From there it was all downhill. This whole thing gets back to the purpose of the 2nd Amendment, now enumerated by quite a few people: we have guns so that we can keep the govt from becoming oppressive. The 2nd Amendment is being chipped away, and so are the 1st and 4th. These things should not be taken lightly. I know that the founders of the Constitution would not sit back and wait to see how govt would use the info. They would probably be getting drunk and dressing up like Indians and throwing PC's into a bay somewhere... Jon
