    EFI Woes

    make sure the egr isnt hooked up.it will surge at part throttle cruise.i only run egr system for smog test.i dont have that vacuem valve for the egr and idle speed in my car except at smog time.
  2. the union 76 fuel distributor in my town has a brochure with a graph on it about mixing street92/110 leaded in the brochure.when i run my car at thunderhill i run 10 gals of 110 in the tank.its because the engine is on boost for a long time there.i hit 125 on the front straight.the union race fuel distributor is in my town.they fill the 5 gallon jugs from the 20000 gallon tank.if gas is stored long octane drops.beware that graph would only apply to union fuel.last summer at the track day for shasta had no pinging with 13-14 psi boost with 110 degree heat and no intercooler.
  3. i have a 77 car.i used the fast low tech way.swap the pinion flange and rear cover and bolt the diff in .
  4. i put in a molded carpet kit with lots of padding underneath-kills noise and keeps heat out.my car stiil has the oem a/c system working.i dont have a radio or tunes in car-i concentrate on driving.
  5. i have known people that got caught in the federal judicial system for things that were never proven and did time for.the federal system works different than dealing with your local county district attorney.if you dont have oj simpson's money your screwed.and you will never know who you pissed off to get all that attention from the feds.oregon and california are full of democrat tree hugging liberals that want to create a form of socialist government.they are afraid of people that hunt and kill game for food and own guns.is it too late for a good attorney?maybe all the hybrid z people could donate for a legal fund?maybe some tree huggers in there volvo station wagon that went a a day hike with $1000 dollars in yuppie hiking gear from rei got scared when they heard some auto gun fire in the woods.
  6. you can get kits for oem mustang t5 with 3.35 first to convert to 2.95 first gear world class t5 ratios.they are about $400 .you have to rebuild the trans because this kit has a complete countershaft cluster change.a buddy at work has a mustang with a blower that runs low 11's and it took about 40 or 50 runs to break the t5-they are not as weak as some people think when used properly.the 5th gear in that set is .63.its very common for a mustang to be changed to the close ratio t5 and a 3.55 rear .the 3.35 first gear was used because mustangs came with 2.80 and 3.08 rear axle ratios-you needed a deep first with those rear axle ratios.
  7. modesto-if you buy parts around here best take a friend and go in day light hours.much of this relates to meth problem around here.the pick&pulls are safe though.i have an alarm system on my house that is monitored.try the wrecking yards in rancho cordova.be carefull if body parts have vin# on them.
  8. some body is parting out a z32 in the modesto bee news paper -i read the paper at work.a buddy brings it from home.try www.modbee.com parting section in auto classifieds.
  9. i run 225 lb x12" front and 250 x 12" rear but car is a street/track car.the tokico illumina struts are used becuase you need a strong strut to control the rebound of the spring.i have to run struts set harder in rear because the rear of car has more of a rebound/bounce problem.if suspension is working correctly car will hit bump-body wont move or bounce.you car hear the fuid in shock when hitting bumps.your spring rates soung good for pure street car.

  11. i got it on ebay-will play around with it and see what fits.i dont have any extra 3.54 r200's around but can get 1 at pick& pull cheap.this would make a good rear for v8 car.
  12. correction -not good ratios.i run a 3.7 lsd with a 81zxt motor with 83 na trans-i like it and have run car at laguna,sears,thunderhill.would like to put a world class t5 in my car-not oem stang tranny.i have t5 bellhousing-input bearing carrier bigger on mustang trans.
  13. i think the t5 is overrated.the ratios are good by sports car standards and they dont shift as smooth a datsun trans filled with redline mtf.the 82/83 trans has best ratios for what i use my car for.close 1to 4 and best 5th for freeway.will cruise 100 in 5th easy.the t5 has ratios like early 75 to 78 z 5 speed -low 1st,2nd,big jump to 3rd.not good at sears point between turns 2to 4.if i was going to builds a drag turbo car i would run auto-you can keep boost up.just stab & steer.
  14. i have part of a post that i printed 2-5-01 about some bushings to go over ring gear bolts.part# is mb1010du-supposed to be from a bearing supply house.could always get some shouldered bolts made by arp -for some bucks.
  15. len -the night before motorsprt show 3 years ago i tore out the lsd rear in my car because i over tightened the pinion nut swapping pinion flanges.removed it ,replaced pinion brgs & seals and installed it in 3 hours.but thats what you can do when you work at a dealership with your own rack and tools,and air.i build diffs at work -i get lots of practice.
  16. i run a 3.7 lsd with a l28 turbo and like the ratio.good cruise on freeway and close ratios on track.unless your v8 has alot of cam you wont want to turn it to fast on freeway anyway if you go on a trip.
  17. 1 of the perts guys at work is into 240sx/sylvia's .after work surfing ebay found a lsd for r200 out of late model sylvia.so i bought it but its not hear yet.have to send money tommorrow.its a bare diff center section only -not the housing.supposed to be a helical gear unit like a gleason-torson.so it wont need special oil or friction modifier.does any body in central ca have a r200 out of car to test install this into?i have stub axles-just need a r200.
  18. i work as a dealer tech at a ford dealer.i have all those ase certificates for cars plus a smog license plus a 2 year degree in electronics.the golf slacked types that own car dealer ships hate owning repair shops-not enough profit margin,too much paperwork.i am looking to sell my house and by some commercial property to rent out .this would be for a steady income while i get my own special type of fab/repair/assembly shop going.i would like to specialize in wiring autos,boats,race cars and get out of heavy repair.3 hernia operations in 20 years.my z is for track use but is also ugly daily driver.typical gearhead-speed is always needed or depression sets in .things are bad in the toy dept right now.z is limping with trans work needed.my 100+ mph boat is torn down for major maintenance-it was falling apart after 10 monthes of cruise at 90 +. my dirt bike needs prep for baja trip.just bought new rockit bike for street-cant get insurence.my van runs great-it only got 108000 on it.bad thing about being auto tech-the flat rate pay system wears you out.people ask me to do side work but i dont -i dont like to work on my own stuff any more.boat is for sale.need money for better investments.the new street bike has a 3 year factory warrenty.if somebody wants a trick z that drives like a new car-just needs paint -i will listen to offers.just got $1000 in new oem nissan weather stripping for it.will fix trans and sell with smog cert.
  19. mr. dan -all normal for old z.the heaters take a liitle fiddling to get them set for winter.i took the water valve out fron side of heater core and put a universal unit under hood.some body needs to come up with a reasonable priced lockset.z had front calipers made from 2 separate subcontractors.what is amazing about an old z is how much stuff can be all @#$%ed up and the car still runs every day.i have had to limp my car 150 miles home from laguna seca and it still made it home at a 55 mph cruise.
  20. i have always thought of just puting headers on backwards and running turbo in front of motor.make sure the motor is mounted back as far as possable.the tubing would have to be ceramic coated.this would keep the runs on all tubing short.
  21. i used to buy stuff from msa but the local nissan dealer across the street from ford dealer where i work gives me %20 over cost on nissan parts and the parts manager that i deal with is an old time nissan guy that knows his stuff.after a while the parts i needed got more specialized so i use more race type parts-not msa resto parts.nissan still sells and stocks a lot of parts for z cars.but i just got the last of some of the oem weatherstripping.the msa show is a little slow for me-they should have it at a drag strip or something.my car is a beater track/work car.some day it might get painted.
  22. since i am a smog tech at work i can prpbably predict why you have a check engine light on.some on the sensors from original car were not installed and ecm sees an open circuit.example-the fuel tank pressure and purge assembly.or the cat monitor o2s.see what dtcs you have .if its for something on the car for your application fix it.if it is for something you deleted you can get the ecm reprogrammed to ignore the missing parts.the chevy performace catalog shows an offroad limited function ecm for an lsi that might be better for a swap application.
  23. most people buy cars like they buy clothes-to impress other people.the car dealer i work at sells $40000 suvs to people that cant afford them and dont even know what the 4x4 is for.the people that buy them just want to look cool.gear heads buy car for a specific use.most of my mechanic buddies have at least 2 cars.i wouldnt be suprised if nissan cam out with a turbo 350 z but it will probably be in the $40000 price range.
  24. sounds like the jerky boys.some of the newer japanese sedans are faster than most people would suspect.my girlfriends 2000 maxima cleaned out a ricer in a prelude-i was driving.a honda or nissan v6 would make a very quick daily driver in a 70 to 73 z because of less weight.the cheapest speed secret is about weight.
  25. i run a 82 zx na trans behind turbo engine.reason-nissan t5 has ratio gaps that dont work when car is used on a road course like sears point or laguna.plus the 82 /83 trans has a better 5th.the t5 might be better for drag racing.the shock load is what kills the trans.the na trans is good if you dont drag race.most of trans problems come from leaky speedo gear drive-trans runs low.i have a zxt t5 bell housing i might try to put a world class close ratio t5 on.and that is NOT a standard oem mustang trans.
