Taurus Fan on V8 Chevy Z

Bartman, I have the same question but then my electrical knowledge is also severely limited. Maybe you need to hook up your fan relay directly to a wire from the positive pole on the battery. I'm using a separate 6 gauge wire to feed the 3 fan relays and a 4 th water pump relay. The high speed fan setting was the only one to blow fuses. The relays are just ordinary automotive 30 amp Bosch units. I ran the Z at Irwindale Thursday and got my best ever 60 ft time of 1.39. I raced with the low fan speed and then used high fan speed to return to the pits. Temps never exceeded 170 degrees. When I turn on the hi speed fan my voltage gauge shows a big dip to 13 volts from 14, at idle. It takes more juice to run the fan than all my other electrical needs, including headlights. Hanns -
Taurus Fan on V8 Chevy Z

I used part # 1120A112, which really fits tight onto the shroud edge with a 1/16th opening. If you want it looser, there is a 1/8th inch opening size too. I think the seal gives the fan a professional look especially after the shroud has been trimmed to fit the radiator. Mike kz, thanks for the seal info. Bartman, the Ecology center has several 2speed Taurus fans. If you just want a low speed Taurus fan and shroud, I will give you one. Pop N Wood, that sounds like a good idea. I will make a diagram and if it won't require too much rewiring I may consider your suggestion. Hanns -
Taurus Fan on V8 Chevy Z

Waynekarnes, Thanks for posting CozyZcole's diagram info. I had searched through prior threads on the taurus fan and found his diagram. However, I wanted manual control of the 2 fan speeds and thus decided on using separate toggle switches. I also wanted to thank someone here who mentioned McMaster-Carr for shroud insulation. That stuff looks good and works. They sent it to me in a very timely manner. Wheelman, I'm glad you tested the fan by turning both speeds on at the same time. I had no intention of doing it but was just curious as to what would happen if I accidentally did this (sooner or later I'll forget and do it). And like others have mentioned turning on both fan speeds will not enhance fan life. Bartman, What do you have to do to get your fan started; spin it by hand? Maybe your wiring is just loose. Hanns -
Taurus Fan on V8 Chevy Z

It is a Arizona Z Car Aluminum racing radiator(24 x 19). However, it is more the airflow through the radiator than the radiator itself that is the major cooling factor because my Black Magic Fan never cooled this well on this radiator. Tim240z.....Thanks for the edit. I'll figure this posting thing out one of these days. I don't understand why your fan runs on a 20 amp fuse when the fan draws 40 amps??? But then electrical questions often confuse me. jack46.... Thanks for the schematic. I'm using 2 relays wired parallel to power the hi speed fan setting and a 3rd relay for the low speed setting. 80LT1....and jack46...Yes, I was afraid of burning up the fan if both switches are activated at the same time. For now I'll use this set-up because it's simple. Hanns -
Installed my $20 93 Ford Taurus Fan on the TT383 Z. I had to install it upside down to clear the turbo exhaust. So I added a small bracket to cover the opening in the shroud and to serve as the upper attachement point to the Arizona Z car radiator. Initially, I used a 30 amp fuse to the 2-30 amp relays for the high speed setting and a separate fuse and relay to the low speed setting. Both are activated by separate toggle switches. I turn on one or the other but not both. Can someone tell me what , if anything, would happen if I turn on both switches at the same time? On high speed the fan worked great while the engine was not running. Once the engine started the fuse blew. I read that some of the members on this site had no problem running a 30 amp fuse with this fan, while others blew 30 amp fuses. O.K, I used a 60 amp Maxi-fuse for my 2-30 amp relays. Problem Solved. Today the Temperature was 98 degrees, so I decided to test the fan on the road. Drove up into the hills and hit it pretty hard when there was no traffic. The highest temperature reached was 182 degrees coolant, although my oil temp stayed at 200 degrees. Returning to the flatland traffic still did not raise the coolant temp above 182 degrees. I'm waiting for some 100 plus degree days to see what happens with the temp. Already had some days like that but I didn't have the airbox fixed until now and I'm using my old carb set-up again. Thanks everyone for recommending this fan. So far it cools better than my Black Magic Fan. Hanns

I have a Twin Turbo 383 in a 72 Z. It is smog exempt(72) and runs well on the street since boost never comes on until I floor it. It has run a best of 6.22 seconds and best of 116mph at a 1/8th mile dragstrip. Pump gas on the street race gas at the strip. I look forward to more of your videos. In the video section of the photo albums I have posted some videos of my Z racing. Hanns -

Jason' date=' The box should be welded up in a couple of days. It just won't look as good as before, oh well. I believe I found out why it backfired at WOT. My new Proform carb body came with .036" replaceable high speed air bleeds but my old Holley carb body appears to have much smaller hi speed air bleeds(apprx .030"). Unfortunately, I [b']azz-umed[/b] both bodies had similar bleeds. The holley manual states each .001" change in bleeds is a 7 percent Increase/Reduction in fuel. This may not be a problem for naturally aspirated engines but for turbos a 42 percent reduction in fuel at WOT could cause a lean backfire. I've ordered smaller air bleeds and some tiny drills to adjust the bleed orifices. Thanks for your concern. How is your Z coming along? Hanns -
Today, while looking for a 2 speed taurus fan I saw this SHO engine in a Taurus. The engine compartment was so clean and the DOHC engine looked quite impressive. Even though its fan was only 1 speed, I took it because the shroud and fan blades looked like new. I also got a 2speed fan for my Z. My main reason for posting this was to alert anyone who might be interested in this engine for a Z swap. This engine is in a Fontana junkyard and on July 23 all items there are half price. I didn't discover this until after I paid $40 for my two Taurus fans. There were still several other 2 speed Taurus fans there. I don't know if the engine runs but the odometer read 69,000 miles. Of course it could mean 169,000 but the engine was so clean. Hanns

Joel, My Z is insured as a classic and there is a mileage limitation. But since I drive it mostly locally and no long road trips it's not bad. It is appraised at $29,500 and costs $270 annually. But consider that I have not had a traffic collision claim or traffic citation in 40 years( knock on wood ). Plus I have 2 other vehicles and homeowner insurance through State Farm. Hanns
-
I'm not sure if it's true for your model but I read that the BG carb jets are sized differently than the Holleys and that's why the Holley was too rich. Hanns
-
I am really sorry to hear about your collision but am glad you were not seriously injured. And your Z was so nice!!!! But knowing you, there will be an even better replacement coming. Good luck, I hope everything works out ok. Hanns

Sorry to hear of your misfortune. Don't expect too much from the insurance Co. because they are not in the habit of making people happy. I had my Z professionally appraised as a Pro-Street Show Car and provided all receipts for documentation. The appraiser included 30 photos and a complete list of all aftermarket and high performance parts in the portfolio. State farm promised that if it were ever totalled on the street(not at the racetrack) I would receive full agreed upon appraised value. Good luck, I hope everything works out for you. Hanns

What's Wrong With This Picture ?

Myron, I'm running 8.3 CR and a friend gave me the 375 E 80 Rajay turbos to use. The turbos' exhaust housings are also .80 A/R which is a little large for my 383 set-up. I don't use a wastegate since the turbos max out at 17psi boost. I tried .60 A/R housings but it was too much power for the tires and I was boosting already at 2000 rpm. At part throttle I was running on the freeway with 10 psi at all times. The turbos reached 30 psi at WOT but my fuel pump couldn't handle the boost. The rotating assembly is from Speed-O-Motive with 4340 crank, Eagle 6" H-beam rods, and JE pistons. The cam is a solid roller from Chet Herbert with reduced base circle and 114 LSA. Good luck on your LS1...keep us posted. Hanns -

Myron, I don't have a website, yet, but I'm willing to share all info on my Z. I 've responded to numerous requests from members on the buildup in the past and if you go to the "members" list under Turbo Meister you will be able to find all my responses. However, if you only want some specific info I will gladly respond with an answer. It would really be nice to have some more Turbo V8 Z drivers here. Hanns -

Yes, it's possible but I actually have more easy street miles on the engine than race miles. But those race miles are stressed by 17psi of boost and they do add up. I will be doing a compression test, for sure. Hanns -
I found 2 pics. Page #9....photo #345 and Page#12....Photo# 475. Congratulations, It lifts the front wheels quite nicely. Maybe a front facing scoop would look good on the hood, but the cowl isn't bad. As far as color...any color red is good. Hanns
