  1. Just a thought about the rack width and bumpsteer.... During cornering we are worried about bumpsteer due to the outer wheel/suspension as that is the one in compression correct? With the rack in front of the cross member/wheel axis the rack will pull on the front of the outer wheel, bringing the tie rod pivot and the LCA pivot more into alignment (at least on the horizontal plane) correct? Should we not be checking the LCA/tie rod pivot alignment at XX degrees of steering angle or some range of steering angles instead of just straight? Seemingly one would want the rack to be wider than the LCA pivots with the wheels straight. Please tell me if im completely high, but I just hadn't seen mention of this in this thread
  2. Come to Vancouver Island....its one of the most beautiful places in the world (I am kinda biased as Ive lived here my whole life). Check out Victoria, there are lots of touristy things to do, maybe go whale watching. Drive up island and go surfing in Tofino. Nothing beats the west coast of VI! Why Edmonton btw? If your hoping for work in the oil fields, its not what it was a few years ago....its just not worth it to pull the oil out of the sand at $40 a barrel. Happy travels!
  3. It seems to be DAT-SUN up here in Canada....I never could understand all those american commercials that pronouce it DOT-SUN....mind you, its a two-forty-ZED up here too....theres no such thing as the letter Zee.
  4. Not ALL diesels are direct injection. Almost all diesels for years were indirect injection. This does not however mean that the fuel was injected at low pressure into the intake runners before the valves as in gasoline cars. They inject fuel at high pressure (not as high as DI injectors though) into pre-combustion chambers in the heads. The idea is that the turbulance created by the transfer from precup to combustion chamber ensures good combustion. Im not really sure why but the IDI engines seem to be able to rev higher than the DI ones. There are some guys with the old VW 1.6TD engines who are able to get 6-7000 rpm out of them and making around 200hp (which doesnt seem like much but it is triple the stock output). Those rpms haven't been achieved with the newer 1.9TDI engines that I know of.
  5. Some good ones here! http://jalopnik.com/5124201/the-jalopnik-top-20-vintage-datsunnissan-ads
  6. Yet more snow! The Q is barely visible The yard on a sunny, snowy xmas day
  7. Congrats man! I'll be starting 3rd year Mech Eng at the University of Victoria in Jan. I have a tech degree as well but decided the real degree was worth it in the end. Best of luck!
  8. Its coming down hard right now...poor Z has nothing but a tree to hide under and its not doing much good. The Q is in the open...shows how much we've had so far!
  9. Nice to know theres a kit out there...we need more info NZeder! That looks just like the setup on a bunch of the GM cars. http://www.aa1car.com/library/steering_power_electric.htm Im sure a used cobalt or ion steering column could be picked up pretty cheap, just need to figure out the wiring. Ive been looking at the Toyota Rav4 system and its hooked up to the CAN bus as it needs vehicle speed and yaw angle from the various other control boxes around the car. I dont know enough about CAN networks to be able to figure out if the signal can be faked easily. Anyone?
  10. I agree Flexi. I would like to speed up the steering significantly for autox use and run big stickies, and unfortunately I don't look like the guy in your avatar. I'm undecided on electric or not but the Mazda 3 also comes with an EPS rack that looks fairly compact.
  11. Has anyone got a weight on the Z32 trans yet?
  12. Keep in mind that Mitsubishi EVO 8's and 9's are now legal to import from the US as well. I like the Audi's as well...the A3 with the 2.0T in particular.
  13. Hey good to hear you and the Z are still alive! Are you living in Vic? If so gimme a shout if you need a spare hand to turn a wrench. My Z should be getting a new engine this year as well. Cheers, Kailen
  14. You bastards out east with your cheap gas.... We have the highest prices in Canada on the west coast here...its still around $0.97...and diesel is still like $1.12 for no apparent reason...my daily is a diesel but its ok cause I get 5.5L/100km.
  15. This and 240hoke's projects are my favorite right now. Props to both of you for doing an amazing job on your swaps! I can't wait to hear driving impressions, vids, dyno numbers etc.
  16. Ok so I drew this up in solidworks so I could play with different scenarios. Hopefully the picture helps to show that any smaller of an angle and you wouldn't be maximizing, and any larger of an angle and you will get a situation where the distance increases, then decreases, then increases again. The angle isn't exact but it should be very close (and very similar to that 70.83 number you had before). The key is to find x and y such that the functions f(x)=a(x-h)^2+k and g(x)=sqrt(r-x^2) (parabola and circle) equal each other AND the derivatives equal each other (are tangent at that point, same slope). You can pick any value for h and note that f(0)=0, and r=sqrt(x^2+y^2). Use all this info to solve for k because for your initial angle tangent line (y=mx), y=2k at x=h. You can then use arctan(2k/h) to get your angle.
  17. Just like a corvette Plus I think even this guy would have problems trying to make coil springs out of wood.
  18. The woodwork is amazing no doubt. Anyone else notice the reverse flow heads with twin Eaton M90's and intercoolers on that Northstar V8? Cool setup!
  19. For that small a price difference it would seem worth it to go for a low mile trans. As for the reliability, they're known to be one of the (if not THE) strongest Nissan transmission made, but higher miles will mean a greater possibility of worn synchros, hard shifting, etc. just the same as any transmission. Who is your source for JDM transmissions (if you dont mind sharing)? Im over on the island and am in the market for one of these as well. Im sure there are a bunch of places that would have JDM parts considering the number of skylines, silvias, etc. you see driving around the island/vancouver these days. Edit: If you need any RB parts/spare engine, I have an R33 RB25DET in my garage thats not being used for anything.
  20. Saw this posted over at NICO and wet my pants. Is this a VH45 decendant of some kind? http://www.nizpromarine.com.au/the_engine.html
  21. W8... Someone buy this.... Flat plane, dry sump... http://forums.fourtitude.com/zerothread?id=3566341
  22. What about a VW W8 from a passat? Just reading the Jan 2002 issue of automotive engineering mag and they have a feature on the W engines. Here are the specs: 271hp @ 6000rpm 273ft/lbs @ 2750rpm 419lbs 16.5"L x 28"W x 26.9"H Since its essentially 2 V4's stuck together its super short at 16.5in! and light. Edit: Found some more exciting info. The W8 engine is dry sumped stock and the crank layout is....FLAT PLANE! The only downside is that the 15deg angle of the banks doesnt allow large bores resulting in an 84mm bore and 90.2mm stroke.
