  1. I have no idea if you would hafta do this, but u have a new turbo, not a stock one-am i correct in thinking this. Did u tune the system for a bigger turbo-if its bigger than stock then it mite b putting in WAY too much air for the injectors to keep up. The only way i can think to fix your problem w/o havin to actually pinpoint the problem is to put in bigger injectors, that will most likely fix a lean mix-but it could also make it run rich if u go too big. Has it just been doin this with ur setup, or did it always do it-since u bought the car? IDK if ne of this would make a diffrence
  2. the way i see it, a nissan/datsun beats a honda neday, no matter how much aftermarket they have for it. The reason theres so much aftermarket for it is cuz u hafta put alot of money into the car to make it worth the smallest amount of money, even civic owners no it-that y they spend so much on other things, cuz they no that the stock car is nuthin.
  3. your best bet isn't to look in your area, if u have the occasional snow storm in the winter-theres gonna b alot of salt to go with it-no matter how rust free sum1 there says it is, theres still gonna b frame rust. You should look in maryland and south from there, cuz there isn't much salt in the winter-cuz its not as bad as NY weather. I got my car for 200, it was sittin under a tree for 2 yrs, i looked underneath, i have a very small amount of SURFACE RUST, thats it, and the batterbox thing was rusted-but thats no big deal. If you can find a cheap one down south, u could fly here cheap, and then drive the car home-hopefully When i got mine, it didn't run, i put sum money into it- it was probly too much for the jobs that were done. But now it fires rite up, and now that i no wht it feels like driving it, i can garentee myself that its gonna make the 2000+ mile roadtrip to FL this spring-if i dont get the LT1 first, but that mite take a bit longer to put in than i wanna wait for. The best thing you could do is find a cheap car down south, i'll help u find a good shell, then fly down here for as cheap as possible, and drive it back, or tow it back on a flatbed. Im not sure if u wanna spend all that time/money on a car-but i can garentee that its gonna b a better shell than ones that they have in NY. PM me if u want me to look, btw, i live near richmond, va
  4. wht about those honda wheel adapters, it keeps the 4 lug setup, but it converts it to a civic pattern, so ne wheel that fits a civic, will fit that. Every rim designer makes sumthin for the civic, cuz u gotta think about it, Civics have got to b the coolest sports car ever mean, there fast as crap, and they have great handleing. P.S. That thing about them being the cooles, is crap, im just not sure of how serious all u guys took that, but i'd have my Z over a civic neday, even if my Z has crappy handleing and gas mileage
  5. ummmm....yeah, i have a ZX, and it has very limited space, not to mention the extra 6 inches ur gonna hafta move ur feet in so u dont dick up ur new 6.5's, im actually thinkin of how im gonna redo my speaker setup, cuz i gotta completly start from scratch. I second the thought, we do need an interior forum..*hint hint*
  6. ummmm....yeah, i have a ZX, and it has very limited space, not to mention the extra 6 inches ur gonna hafta move ur feet in so u dont dick up ur new 6.5's, im actually thinkin of how im gonna redo my speaker setup, cuz i gotta completly start from scratch.
  7. They dont have a ZX automatic, my car doesn't exist, the world isn't worth living in nemore. Wht i noticed is that everytime i lookup stats for my car-they have every car except an 81' ZX n/a, they have every year except 81', they dont even have specs on the 81 turbo, does this make sence to neone, should i b looking it up as a 79' since i have the P79 head, it was made in 79' Also, my title says 81', my registration says 79', and my newest registration says 80'......wht is wit this?!?!?!?!!?
  8. did u use the old screwdriver trick, sumthin so easily done, can help diagnos a big problem....whoever came up with that idea-was a genious
  9. Everyone seems to be having the flooding problem lately, i just got over it now. I can't remember who had the answer to test the Head Temp. Sensor by puting in a resistor, neone can chime in if they no nethin else about this. The only ways that i can think of flooding is Head Temp. Sensor, faulty ECU, AFM problems, and....thats all i can think of. Get the resistor with the closest ........found it
  10. i second Thumper's idea, i had a bad head temperature sensor, i think this is the same thing ur talkin about-just below the #5 spark plug, if that goes, it will flood ur engine everytime u try and start it.
  11. how do u no that ur injectors rn't pulsing, did u assume it through not starting or wht-have u tried the "screwdriver trick"-u hold a flathead on the injector, between the electical connection and the injector body, u should hear a clicking. R u sure that ur injectors rn't bad as it is?
  12. ummm, wow, ur post is helpful-u gotta describe the problem a bit better, wht usually happens b4 the car shuts off, does it start idleing really low, and then die, or wht. on ur exhaust is there alot of black garbage-wich means that ur running too rich, mayb a head temperature sensor problem. u should also check the spark from the wires- hold it up against the exhaust manifold, and look for a blue spark, if its a yellow spark-its too weak and u need new wires or cap and rotor. If u dont get enough spark-then it mite b idleing too low and then just die out, im having an idle problem at the moment, and the spark plugs r the next thing to b replaced, other than that-i have a full new spark setup BTW, wht is ur idle around, i believe the stock idle for a Z is around 1000 RPM If ur idle is off, then that could help pinpoint y ur car dies You said ur plugs were fouled, wich means theres alot of unburned gas in there, could mean bad spark, or bad mixture-having a bad head temp sensor can cause ur engine to flood itself, meaning that theres too much gas and not enough air-wich could explain y ur plugs r fouled. i had the problem once b4
  13. ewwww, i had a simalar problem, i couldn't take off my fuel rail to install new injectors-so i brought it to a mechanic, no big deal, cuz i soon figured out that i needed new fuel injector connectors.....well, long story short, it cost me 1,400 to get the car running, and it idled like shit, and it didn't have an FPR, it was ghetto rigged with a clamp. that 1400 didn't include the price of the injectors either!!!!!! Don't trust a mechanic to no howto work on an old car, these guys thought they knew wht they were doing to it....but they didnt-its funny, cuz the only guy that knew much about the car was the young guy-mayb 20-23 yrs old.....lol, us kids no wht were talkin about at times
  14. i had the exact same problem, only they happened at diffrent times. my idle kept dropping and i had to give it gas when it was stopped-turns out that the old cap and rotor were crap, so i got a new cap and rotor, and sum new plug wires. Idled like a champ, or as close to a champ as a 23 yr old car can get. I also had a problem with my car not starting for a long time, i took off the cap, rotor, and disconnected the ignition control unit, and recconected it on there TIGHT, and it fires up every time. It has started idling a little lower than usual now, and so far i've replaced everything cept the plugs, so i think thats next. My frends car idled really bad-it would even shut off, he replaced the spark plugs, and it idles great.
  15. whoops, i didn't notice the other post, srry bout that
  16. Mayb u have a bad thermostat, they do crap out eventually-my frends toyota supra just had the same problem, it would run too cold-turns out that his thermostat broke and stayed in the open position-wich let the cool coolant get in the engine, b4 it was hot-he put a new thermo in-gave it about 3-5 minuts, and the temperature went up in no time BUT, i did NOT overheat
  17. wht kind of batteries were u using, were they the cheapest thing on the self, or where they decent batteries-if i were u, i'd go with an Optima battery-they have good reviews and such, but if ur killing high-dollar batteries, then just buy cheap ones, cuz if enen a godd battery doesn't last, then no use buying a name brand
  18. is anybody here using MSnS on a basicly stock 81 ZX(not sure if the diffrent years use diffrent computers-so possibly any model 280ZX), i was thinking of going megasquirt and my setup is all stock, i dont wanna completly screw it up at first-so i was wondering if i could get a copy of sum1s programming for stock injectors and so on(Non turbo) so that i can use that and tune it to precisly work with my car
  19. the funniest thing about all this stuff is-so far i haven't had ne "engine" related problems, its just things that work with the engine, not the engine itself such as new injectors, new injector wires, used FPR, used head temperature sensor, another used FPR, and prolly one more FPR But when i look at the engine, compression is fine, oil pressure is great, i haven't had a chance to change my oil yet, but the oil level has been the same ever since i got the car 6 months ago, and its been running awesome since then-after the car finnally started 3 months ago Well, this weekend-Xmas at the parents house, reinstall old FPR, mayb fix the gas gauge, and do an oil change btw, when i take out the fuel sending unit, to "fix " it, do i hafta drain the gas out, or is there alot of gas that will spill everywhere, my parents r gettin quite pissed off about me spillin gas everywhere when i hafta do sumthin to the car -thats y replacing the FPR is gonna b "fun" this weeknd
  20. well, i got sum gas, and tried to start it again...my FPR just crapped out. AGAIN-this will b my 3rd FPR, guess i'll put back on the other one that had a moderate vacume leak instead, but it still ran great, just put gas into my vacume lines......
  21. from wht i've heard.........the ZX has a longer wheel base, upgraded suspension?, it was a bit slower-unless u had the turbo, and if i remember correctly-my wieght sticker on my door says its-3800 pounds, and im not sure about the 280z, but i just found out that the ZX has a 21 gallon tank!!! i thought it was gonna have a 12 gallon one
  22. well last nite i get a frend over, to show her that i finnally got my car road worthy, and i start it up for her, and it doesn't fire..............went back this mornin, and......im outa gas-i really gotta fix my gas gauge does nebody no the possible reason y my gas guage doesn't work-is there a main problem that it could b that i could look into, cuz i can't stand not noin how much gas i have....its a pet peeve of mine
  23. Got the 280 runnin, i thought about wht u guys were sayin about the control module....disconnected it, then reconnected it(i guess it was a loose connection) then i started it, and the tach jumped to 5K-the engine didn't rev that high, but i guess i made an electrical probelm...but it doesn't do that nemore...it starts EVERYTIME THANX GUYS, now onto the interier
  24. how hard would it b to swap out the MS unit from one engine to another....like say doin an engine swap, would i hafta get a whole new MS unit?
  25. i second the thought, i don't really like the porshe front end, its too big and bulky, sticks out to far... i perfer the subtle Z kit
