Thanks Van. The general consensus does seem to be against the fade, but that's okay I'm still not deterred. I received my vinyl "cheater" fade, so I had to give it a quick test and see how it looks. I actually like it better than I thought I would. These pic's are from my camera phone:
The silver is just rattle can that I had laying around and I got a little paint on the top of the vinyl, but I think you can get the general idea.
Now that looks good! My daughter was looking over my shoulder and she said "it's so hot it makes the devil look like the abominable snowman". Obviously it would take a lot of skill and practice to have it blend in that nice.
I saw an SUV in the parking lot at work with a black to gold fade on it. This is close to what I was thinking for my car.

I used the stock cable and modified the end to connect to my 240Z accelerator pedal. I did have to modify the length and I wound up connecting it using bicycle brake parts (the throttle cable is similar to a bicycle brake cable).
I was hoping that was an older show as it was pretty bad. The chain smoking guy with the Olds really did get screwed on the deal. The other guy was obviously letting up and Rich didn't believe it. Rich should be part owner of the crappy Olds because he setup the negotiations so that the Olds would lose.
I installed my Datsun sending unit into a GM tank (2001 Trans Am), so I would venture to say that it's probably fairly simple to put the GM sending unit into a Datsun tank as well. You may have to play around with the bends in the float arm as I did in my install, but with a little ingenuity you should be able to figure it out.
Another option would be to use a GM tank like I did, which will also give you the option of running dual exhaust exiting the rear on both sides of the tank.
I still like the fade and I'm going to try and see if I can create the effect I want on my parts car just using spray cans. I also have a roll of vinyl on order that is a little more than 4" wide and transitions from silver on one side to clear on the other. I"l try it to see how it looks, but I'd rather be able to do the fade with paint.
Sounds like you have plenty of clearance for your steering shaft now. I used a cut-off wheel on my grinder and that made easy work of trimming my mount.
I have the non-vented genuine GM Opti sitting in my garage. Tim240z bought it new, so it only has around 1,000 miles on it. PM me with an offer if you're interested.
I guess it all depends on your budget and goals. I don't think the Opti is as bad as some people make it out to be. There are plenty of people that have many many miles on their car without any Opti related problems whatsoever. This is especially the case if you have a vented unit. I went ahead with a vented upgrade on my 94, but opted to use the Accel Opti instead of the factory unit (it looks like they run around $270 on eBay).
Are these other systems better...maybe, but it's definitely going to cost you. In my opinion, you should put the cash into something else that will get you more bang for your buck.
You can place it wherever it works best for you, but having to clearance the engine mount isn't a problem. I had to cut a good chuck off the bottom corner of mine to allow room for the steering shaft.
Deja,
For some reason you have much more clearance between the steering rack and the balancer than I do. Mine is probably something like 1/8". Maybe because you're using an automatic you have your engine farther forward than I do?
If you're thinking about the Patriot headers read this thread. They fit on D-Ports, but they are not D shaped.

Not to say they're bad...I'm running them without any problems.
Yes, that pic of the Mako Shark car has the type of look I'm going for. Not so over the top with gills, but just a paint job that's kinda shark like. The blue I'm using has silver and blue pearl, so I think that combined with a metallic or pearl light silver pearl on the bottom, will give me the look I'm after.
I like that one too, and that's what I was thinking of doing at first. Here's an image I made using silver and blue (it's looks kinda grey, but it would actually be painted silver):
Here's a thread a started awhile back wiith 2-tone paint schemes.

In general I like two-tone paint jobs similar to the BRE paint job, but I've seen it on quite a few Z's already; so I want to do something different. Blue is my main color (already used it in my engine bay), but there are also many blue Z's out there already.
I don't mind the "dated" look, the car already has a dated look with the chrome bumpers. The only real holdback for me is the ability to paint the fade to turnout the way I want it to. So I'm going to do some testing first to see how it comes out. If anyone has any suggestions on techniques I'd like to hear them.
I didn't keep track, but I'd venture to say somewhere in the neighborhood of $1200 for everything (bracket, compressor, condensor, evaporator, dryer, lines, upgraded control panel, etc.)
I download a program called the GIMP a few weeks ago and started playing with different paint schemes for my car (the GIMP is a freeware application similar to Photoshop). After playing around for a while with several diferent ideas, this is what my family and I decided on:
So what do you think? If you remember the Mako Shark concept car, the paint scheme is similar to that. I'm planning on doing the paint job myself so I'm going to have to practice on getting the fade to look right.
