What size fuel line from the tank?
dr_hunt replied to that240guy's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Not for the street, I'd use electric. I've soldered pickups in tanks, in the factory removable piece, It's a pain, but comes out looking great. FYI, interestingly enought the pump manufacturers will tell you that siphon puts and unwanted strain on the pump. -
Larry, your well on your way to 4 pages! What will you think of next?

What size fuel line from the tank?
dr_hunt replied to that240guy's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Well, there is a tendency to get crap in the belt which screws things up. For a race car probably not a big deal. For anything on the street it isn't a belt you can get anywhere. I'll probably do that for the z, since it's getting a new bigger engine anyway, the pump I have is on a dead head system that I doubt will feed it properly, so might at well take the plunge. -
What size fuel line from the tank?

Yeah, that is an absolutely fantastic idea that I'm contemplating incorporating into my car now. This is a wakeup call for me! -
There is nothing like a disaster to force an issue into motion. Yesterday while working I had a magnetic wet drum separator break in half. It was just worn thin in the middle. It is a stainless steel drum with a 1/4" thick stainless shell with rare earth magnets in it to separate magnetic material out from my gravel products. Fairly important. So, I called the manufacturer and they want $6,500 for a new stainless shell, but they don't have one and I'd have to wait 6 weeks or so! So, pondering my situation, which was one reason I went to the bar last night, I figured that I could buy sheet stainless, have it rolled to fit over this shell, tig weld it together and stitch weld the ends and be back in business. Mind you this thing is 20+ years old, so I was thinking 3/16 sheet should do it, then when it wears through I can grind the stitch welds off and redo it. SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, looking on ebay and there is an HTP tig on there, demo model from the manufacturer, so I'm going to have to buy that now! Like in 2 days! So, hands off, I need it.

What size fuel line from the tank?

Not for belt drive pumps, they will need that size line anyway, they move massive quantities of fuel. Actually I run both, gas and alky. When you design for alky you can switch to gas for the street, which, in my case requires a simple carb change! An interesting note though, CART, F1 and others mandated alcohol fuel over gas because of an explosion and resulting fire that killed several drivers in a race many years back. Not to mention that it makes more power, easier to tune IMO, engine runs cooler, safer for racing IMO, and I'm doing my part to save the world with clean fuel! We had a local racer die this week, Mark Martinez crashed his vette. He hit the wall, popped the windshield out, went over the wall, endoed several times, ripping the carb off the engine, race gas sprayed directly into the cockpit and it caught fire. He was walking around after they put the fire out, took 10 fire bottles, but he had burns over like 85% of his body. Burned the fire suit plum off. Air lifted him to Phoenix, where he died this week of heart failure. Body couldn't take the stress. They couldn't put the fire out, the BG 400 pump just keep feeding the fire until the cell went dry, like 10 gallons! Alcohol is much easier to extinguish, water does the trick in an instant! Edit: My point is that a belt driven pump wouldn't have done that! -

I have run the aeromotive belt driven pump and the C&S one. Both require -12 lines to the pump and a -10 return, but they flow mondo fuel at any pressure since they are positive disp. pumps driven by the engine, so they don't have hp problems. -

Electric pumps don't suck very well. FYI the ultimate pump is a belt driven pump, changes flow with engine speed, will support like over 2000HP! Just carry spare belts. -
For a daily driver, I'd say no. Methanol is hydroponic and will cause you problems if you leave it in the tank for extended periods. It helps to have a sump in the tank and draw from that cause then whatever water is in there goes into the carb. You'll notice a stumbling or miss for awhile till it's all gone. You have to run a stainless filter also, but they are cheap. THe other problem is it attacks carbs pretty bad. I disassemble mine every time I use it and blow it dry and spray penetrating oil everywhere. EFI would be interesting though.

Mortensen is working on it, going to take time. Sometimes when I do a search theres alot of threads, but nothing really relevant. Go jon, go.

What size fuel line from the tank?
dr_hunt replied to that240guy's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
Well, considering I taught it at New Mexico State University for 3 years while getting my masters, uh, maybe alittle. I'm not sure what science is behind the pump, which is the big equation here. Typically pumps have curves, but what seems to be lacking is a good motor that won't burn up if loaded. That's what I'm seeing. Oversized lines to; 1. keep fuel cool, and 2. Lower the load on the pump, which can be pretty high depending on pump. -10 for me running alky probably isn't big enough, I need to go -12 lines next time around. But when I started all this racing stuff I bought a holley black fuel pump for my 9:1 406 that I converted to alky. What a mistake that was. It would barely feed my "stocker". I went from a 13.30 et down to a 12.58 with the alky changeover on that 9:1 motor, no other changes in the Monte SS. But the point I'm trying to make is that it's the pumps that can't handle the pressure and flow delivery, not the lines. -
I did, just got home from the historic "No scum allowed saloon" in White Oaks, New Mexico! Where you can always find a half set of teeth that somebody left behind! Come to tink of it, I didn't see a full set except in the mirror behind the bar. Dayummm!

Wow, so late and I've had so much to drink, Burp! We have the trusty dusty ACME search function, that however useless it may seem, works, even for me! Jon Mortensen is working on compiling all the pertinent information relevant to improving the wonderous z car in all models. If you will gander about the site and view and read, you will absorb a wealth of information. I actually never knew what a z car was until i visited this site. Just kidding! To make the car solid there are various options of frame suports, roll bars and roll cages depending on what your intended purpose is. Burp! There is a whole section on brakes, visit that as well, it is a forum of it's own. Kind of like me. Burp! Posi (correct spelling is a must here, people will dog you for it, burp!) can be found in the newly created thread by Jon Mortensen, he is next to the guy next to the guy next to god and is one of 10 or so people who can vote you off the island! Don't piss him off! Trust me on that one! If that doesn't help you then PM me tomorrow with more specific questions. There are some lengends here, I'm not one, except in my own mind, that will be able to enlighten you! Edit: Oh, by the way, look at the timeslip database and see who's fast, typically they have something up their sleeve if you know what I mean!

High Capacity Oil Pan... Will This One Fit?

Va must be weird. Here you can buy meth (both kinds) about anywhere. The liquid fuel type goes for about $2/gallon. I don't know about the other kind of meth and have never heard of road taxed methanol, but I guess maybe you learn something new everyday. I'll do a check and see what I find, something doesn't sound right with your statement though. Well, I did a check and your boss appears to be incorrect. Any alcohol or blend of alcohol, that is 80% or greater, is Federally exempt from road taxes under a new provision of the law, federal excise tax or federal road use tax because it is a "clean fuel". It would have been taxable under the old regulation but only the same tax that applies to gasoline which in VA is 17.5 and 16 cents per gallon for a total of 33.5 cents per gallon. So if he was collecting more than $2.34/gallon, then he's making a decent profit. Anyway, that's what I found with alittle searching, based on API, Fed register search on fuel taxes.

72 240z wanders left & right randomly
dr_hunt replied to Miles's topic in Brakes, Wheels, Suspension and Chassis
First off, quit driving with no hands, I don't care if your ma is looking or not! Sounds like the steering rack is worn out. Roads do have grooves in them, some more noticeable than others. Roads are not flat either, some slope one way or the other. I would imagine that you need a new steering R&P. -
reaction speed/tree practice
dr_hunt replied to grumpyvette's topic in Gen I & II Chevy V8 Tech Board
I find it amusing but the delay from when I mash the gas or let go of the transbrake button and when the car moves make a difference when compared to practicing on this tree. Amusing and fun to play with, where's the prize? -

You should be alright for 360HP. The important thing is to check with the pump manufacturer before you buy. I checked with aeromotive before laying out my system and for my application my system is designed based on their recommendation. However if it doesn't work, it can be fixed so that it does. They say the A1000 will support 1200HP carb'd forced induction, although their literature doesn't say that, we'll see, I may have to step up to the eliminator pump, but that is if this combination will produce that kind of HP, which is a big if at this stage. I'd be happy with 1000HP in the Monte which should lay down 800HP+ to the wheels, which should put me in the low 10's which is where I want it to be. Well, maybe high 9's, ok, so I'm greedy, which is why I went to James Thagard! -
Yeah, they are pretty good, don't clear Dart blocks, stock blocks are fine. I ran 3 inch exhaust with bullet mufflers. Part #5205, they make them coated as well. I wanted bigger tubes than 1-3/4" inch but I'd have to make them I think. I wanted 2 inch or at least 1-7/8" With the AFR heads I had to grind one of the spark plugs wire end down just to get it started in the threads, but it has pleanty of clearance once installed and the boot doesn't burn either!

You track junkie you! Is it working better? When is the new motor going in? I can tell you that seeing his fabrication work and quality is astounding. At SEZ 6 I talked to the legend in person and he told me he would be glad to assist me. Again on the phone he said the same and I can honestly tell you that the stuff he does works, it was evident on several cars there at SEZ, fast cars too! All you hybridz'ers take note, if you really want it done right and can't do it yourself with regards to intakes, turbo's, IC's, exhaust, call James or visit his website. His work is truly phenominal. I can't wait to be boosted, but in performing the calculations the intake charge air temp had me more than concerned and the thought of plumbing twins like ol' Silicone boy is intimidating. Thagard will fix it so I can extract every ounce of HP out of this combo. Which is why I needed a wideband, too bad I didn't know about it earlier. Somebody will need it though.

I think Dan has forgotten more than most people know about computers. It's a lot more complicated than that, I'll wait for the news to unfold ala SuperDan when he's ready to disclose what happened.
