  1. Hi, I am looking for a shipping company to ship my engine from Bristol,PA to BC, Canada. The eBay seller quoted 725$ which sounds too much, so I am trying to arrange my own shipping instead. Know any shipping company that'll do this for me for a more reasonable price? Thanks
  2. That's good news, know a support forum/website somewhere?
  3. Exactly, the 8 valve four cylinder version will drive just like my daily driver(Jetta GLS,auto) or worse due to age. If I ever get one it's going to be either straight 6, dohc 4 or engine swap. Seeing how the 190E engine bay can fit a straight 6 (again, like the old Z), it'll prolly swallow some bigger engine....hmmm...
  4. I may have been bitten by another car bug after the S30Z. This time it's the Mercedes 190E. I caught sight of a few several times on the street and in parking lots. They don't look very special, in fact they are one of those "boxy" cars that I thought I would never liked. But the more I look at them the more I like them. No reason. That is before I found the similarities between 190E and S30Z. It turns out that 190E is similar to the S30Z in several ways : The 190E was designed to let Mercedes-Benz break into the market and to make the public change its mind about the image of the company. Similarly, the Z were designed to be embraced by Americans and to turn the company image of (Datsun)Nissan into something other than a maker of econo-box cars. The 190E spawned a series of C-class cars following it just like the Z spawned a series of Z cars. They were hot items of their time. Like the Z, 190E's were sold a soon as they hit the dealership. They are strong race contenders as they dominated races even when they are ten years old. "Together with the cheaper BMW M3, which enjoyed far better sales worldwide, the 190E 2.5-16 continues to dominate the "Normally Aspirated cars up to 2500 cc" class in endurance and 24 hour racing at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, as newer models from BMW and Honda are not designed to be as competitive as these two 1980s veterans.(from Wikipedia)" Lastly, 190E and Z both started their own cult of fans and followers. More info of 190E on Wikipedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/190E My Z project will certainly continue, but I'll be looking out for that one special 190E 2.3-16 that is going to be mine, someday. It bothers me that I found another "me" car before the Z is finished, but deep down, I am glad that cars I've liked all turn out to be strong, ground-breaking cars in the automotive history. Any 190E fans here?
  5. jakeshoe pretty much summed it up, in fact, this morning a 5.3 + 4L60E went for 1500$(or was it cheaper than that, I forgot) on eBay. The prices on 5.3 and 6.0 iron block engines seems to be reasonable AT FIRST, but you have to buy F-body oil pan(200$ + ship) to get more ground clearance for S30 Z. The trucks stock intake will not let the S30Z hood close, must use passenger car intake(200$ + ship). If the truck engine comes with iron heads, then add yet another 250$+ship for al heads. If you go for the 6.0 engine, the effect of extra displacement and extra weight pretty much cancels out each another(5% increase of displacement compared to 5.7 while the extra 70lb of weight factors into about 3% increase in vehicle weight). Going 5.3 is cheaper but in the end you get a heavier engine than the LS1 and less displacement.
  6. Same 5 day auctions, same start time, same close time....I didn't even notice that, good eye too J. Soileau RB26zcar !!
  7. I noticed the book you recommends and that looks like a great book. That's the one I am going to buy. I am also tempted by this book : http://www.amazon.com/Dyno-Proven-Thru-Performance-Parts-Design/dp/1932494405/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/102-7564617-9994521?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1174242449&sr=8-1 Basically a "this bolt-on makes this much power" book. Should be close to a shopping catalog backed by dyno tests. It's a new book (feb 1st 2007), so no feedbacks yet, but it's only 16.47 for 160 pages. If no one says anything bad about this book then I'll prolly buy it too.
  8. I just finished reading the link posted by Meghan, it tells me more about the genIII block than all my magazines combined. Thanks again.
  9. New owner to a 98 LS1, Now I need to read more about them. I have found a few books on LS1 on Amazon, but let's hear your recommendations first. Thanks
  10. Listed by 3 new eBay users, all registered on March 16th, all have LS1+T56 for sale, all accept Paypal only. The description is written in different styles and the sellers appear to be located in different places of the country. Caveat Emptor! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/97-04-LS1-LS6-engine-T-56-transmission-Corvette-GTO_W0QQitemZ260097964931QQcategoryZ33615QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-LS1-LS6-Engine-Transmission-Combo_W0QQitemZ190093652030QQcategoryZ33615QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-Trans-Am-WS-6-LS1-Engine-Transmission_W0QQitemZ110104291327QQcategoryZ33615QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem Edit for correction : the link in the middle is a LS1+auto combo, not LS1 + T56 as I wrote earlier
  11. Real? Fake? http://www.thatvideosite.com/video/3123
  12. Yeah, that's what I gathered. But most LS1+auto sells for 3000$ and I paid for my engine 2000$. That means the extra 1000$ is for the trans. Since I can find a 4L60E locally for like 450$, I can save some money/shipping. What you said is true though, the best way to go is to get a complete set.
  13. I quess I put this in the wrong forum. I started another one in the drivetrain section.
  14. I just bought an LS1 on eBay, the engine is from a 98 Camaro with just over 100K miles. I want to use 4L60E auto trans so here's the question : will 4L60E from other vehicles fit right on the LS1? Do I have to worry about the bolt pattern of different bellhousing and what not? Thanks
  15. Pretty dumb question really...but nothing showed up in search. I just bought a complete LS1 from a 1998 F-body(just over 100K miles) without transmission. Since I want to run an auto, it will be 4L60E. Buying a complete LS1+Auto will cost 3000$ on eBay nowadays, so I bought engine alone(2000$) because I noticed several 4L60E's for sale locally for around 450$ which I can pickup without shipping. The main question is "are all 4L60E's the same?" Say a 4L60E from a 97 Astro van, will it bolt right on the LS1? Thanks
  16. Great video, now I want one.
  17. It blocks the exhaust so much....even if it makes a realistic bov sound, people won't notice it when they drive past the slow moving car.
  18. Does any one know how much a GenIII IRON block can be overbored before rendering the block unsafe? How about Aluminum LS1 blocks? how much can they be overbored WITHOUT using new liners? I am asking this to compare the overbore potential of genIII iron blocks vs aluminium blocks. Thanks
  19. Downloading now... I noticed something odd, in the description written on the page, it says "The truck engine is a V8 all aluminum Over Head Valve engine with Active Fuel Management and Variable Valve Timing. The truck engine is used in the Denali and Escalade." Since when did the GM V8 have variable valve timing? Does it mean to say variable displacement(shutting down 4 cylinders)?
  20. I was searching and come across a thread here. Basically it says "a certain year(or year range) of LS1 blocks do not have a certain oil return, making them unsuitable for high HP applications." The original thread is http://forums.hybridz.org/showthread.php?t=108319&highlight=5.3 the original message is "just buy an LS1 F body motor and trans, it would be cheaper than piecing together something else. because you arent wanting to make HUGE hp any 98-02 motor would be fine for your needs (for higher hp applications where you are trying to spin to 7k 98 and 99 motors dont have the oil return for that and spin bearings) get a cam that makes all its hp before 6500 and you will be fine. a 98 motor and trans could be had for 1500-2500 depending on condition. and with a mild cam you would still be looking at 400+ crank hp with "bolt ons.""----------end original message What kind of high HP are we talking about here? What about other non-aluminum blocks like 5.3,6.0 GenIII engines? Do they have THE oil return? I searched a lot here and on LS1tech.com, but the LS1tech site returns only results about turbo oil line plumbing. Can someone elaborate on the "oil return." ? Thanks
  21. Ah I see why there was misunderstanding..... a "pin" can mean a long, thin cylindrical object, or an inlet/outlet of a data/signal bus in electronics. In this case, the pin is a signal inlet/outlet. Thanks
