  1. Im not worried a whole lot about MPG, i just know overdrive would help queit a bit, and wouldnt mind having it. maybe yall are right about it having enough power in lower rpms to get it going, if it dosnt i guess i could just down shift to another gear. the more i think about it the more i remember. The DZ 302's were drivin on the street all the time, and they could still rap up to high rpm's maybe im too worried about nothing. now i need to find a 5 speed that will handle some power Anyone have a reccomendation for a 400hp (give or take) 5 speed?
  2. A 3,500 Rpm crusie does sound bad, but thats what i keep the z at now, it about 70 mph, stock inline and a 4speed, i drive 2 hours everyweekend to come home from fort hood, im surprised it makes it everytime. if the motor dosnt run good at 2,000 then i really dont wanna keep it in that range, i wanna keep it where its running decent. I havnt picked a cam yet. Its gonna be a carbed motor.
  3. Ok guys, heres my delima. I am building a 302(yes chevy) And i have come to the tranny selection. Now, im buildin this 302 to turns some rpms, i want to spin to 7,500 and still be in the power band. Now to do this, im going to sacrific my lower RPM driveability. I have a 79 malibu, with a 4speed and 3.42 rear so i know how 4 speeds can be on the highway, so i wanted a nice stronge 5 or 6 speed, so i could get somewhere above 7 MPG, In the 6 speeds i have been in, they usually sit at about 1,200 RPM around 70mph (of coarse depending on the gearin). I assume my motor will not run for anything at 1,200 RPM. So should i just use a 4 speed at cruise around at 3,500 RPM all the time, and say screw gas milage and insane gas prices? or do i scratch my high rpm idea so i can run a overdrive trans? OR, i could just put some insane low gears in it, and stick it in 6th gear and drive around at 3 or 4 grand? i would get some speeding tickets for sure onthat one? whats some suggestions guys?
  4. Hey guys. My tach randomly works. Sometimes it will sit on 0, and then jump to life, for no reason. Sometimes, tappin on the glass will actually make it work, but rarely. I have takin out the tach, and made sure all the connections are tight, i have checked the coil too. What else could it be? My tach is important, because my speedometer waves between 60and120 when im doin anything above 50mph, i just get to 3,500 RPM, and cruise, i dont wanna go over 3500, but without a tach, i have no idea how fast im going. Any help would help, thanks, Harrison.
  5. I stopped by the all z junkyard today, im sure the texas guys know of it, but just wanted to share. The cool thing is the guy is about 1 mile from my shop, and i just found him. And then just for fun, heres a picture of me with my m-16, with and M203 40mm grenade launcher. For all the army guys, i qualed 40 out of 40 with the rifle.
  6. Datsunlover: awesome man, i totally see your point. I just had a discussion tonight about stupid kids, and their definition of fast. this, kinda has to do with what your talkin about. Fast is a relative term. To a high school girl, her caviler maybe fast, to a normal high school boy, his civic with exhaust maybe "fast" to a granny, her caddy maybe fast. They dont know fast. My malibu is decent, its quick, it will easly beat new z/28's and GT mustangs, but i know, even that isnt "fast" I have never been "fast" and ive riddin in 7 sec (1/8mile) cars. those arnt fast. everyone has their own definition of fast Tim, the truck is a '69 3/4 ton. Check in my photo's on here to see pics. Its got 108k original miles, and workin a/c. It is for sale for $9,000. I am going to pour all the money into the z, and the 302 chevy i am building for it. well, i bought the truck, and rebuilt the motor, thats it, the z i just bought (for a hybrid or corse, but i havnt touched it) now the 'bu on the other hand, i bought it with a mild 350, automatic, i ripped the motor and tranny out, and I BUILT a forged crank, forged scat rods, forged .100 dome probe piston, motor. Its got a holler 650 double pumper with double hump heads. The tranny is a super t-10 i had built with a 3.42 first gear, i have to shift at about 10mph, but i get there very quick. (i swapped trannies 4 times in 4 days) I also changed the rear end from a 7.5 to a 8.5 (from a Grand National) with a 3.42 posi.
  7. Ok, i can see how you could be offended by a kid having a fast car, and not really knowing how to drive it, but dont assume his folks bought it. I am 19 also, and have 3 cars, all of which i paid for in full, by myself, and are paid off. If he wants 10, then he prolly didnt pay 10, and is lookin to just make a quick buck. For my '69 i paid $5,300. for the '79 malibu i paid $1,800. and for the z (i just bought it a month ago) i pait $2.700 for it. I have droped about 3k into to the truck, and about 5k into the malibu (pertty quick car) I had the truck, and the 'bu when i was 17, if he saved ever penny he ever had, and poured them into a car, or a savings account for a car, he could have easly bought that himself. I get pretty heated when someone just pops off and thinks my dad bought me my stuff, i busted my *** for the stuff i have, the only thing he ever bought was the chrome oil pan for the truck, and he donated a 350 block (that was going to the scrap yard) for the 'bu. My mom bought me a RPM air-gap for the 'bu. other than that i have paid for 100% of them.
